  • Saw them back in late 80's at The Whiskey, what a great band. Their music touches my soul especially this tune with Marcy.

  • Been loving this video since the day i saw it on youtube. Big whigs fan, and I usually never comment but would like to ask that if anyone has a better quality version of this (or the whole show) to drop me a private message or upload them to youtube for us to enjoy. Cheers to bombers66 for uploading this!

  • Although I've never heard Scrawl before "My curse" I have to say this song makes me very curious about her songwriting. Her singing and commitment makes for an unnerving yet satisfing listen. I'm also glad I can finally see what she looks like!!

  • Was this the same show Steve fell off his kit during Debonair?

  • I got the chills.I'm pissin & shittin.I'm cummin,I'm cryin. Powerful song.Off a great album.

  • My favorite song of all time. Love the Afghan Whigs! I cannot tell you how many times of sung this song in my car.

  • @babykesq I know the feeling. I've done that so many times over the years. I've lost count of the number of times other motorist gave me strange looks. I'd be singing my head off to '...And there's blood on my teeth when I bite my tongue to speak...'

  • quien me puede dar la traduccion de esta cancion

  • damn, she nails it. Love this band. I met Greg Dulli and told him how much this album meant to me and he was so nice. We sat for a few minutes and talked about it. When i left the bar, I went over to say goodbye and he hugged me and said "Thanks for the kind words; it really meant a lot."

  • I was there! Seeing them there in 94 started me off as a lifelong fan

  • This is hauntingly beautiful.

  • This song reaches in to my chest, rips out my heart, mashes it into pulp and stuffs it back inside everytime I listen to it. Can't get get anymore potent and raw than this masterpiece from Dulli and the Whigs. And yes Marcy as well. Still bloody amazing after all these years.

  • when marcy hit that "ever" lyric at 4 minutes something in the video it literally sent a shiver down my spine... if that's not being moved by a song then I don't know what is...

  • da brivido

  • I made a top 5 list (People who have seen High Fidelity know what I'm talking about) of saddest songs and this was number one because it has so much emotion and feeling and it's about a very delicate subject and it isn't like completely just 'I hate everything.'

  • Given the nature of this song's lyrics. I'm not surprised that Dulli asked someone else to sing it.

  • still so touching.

  • CLK where are you

  • Apparently, Dulli wrote this song and was going to sing it, but couldn't bring himself to do so. So he got Marcy Mays. Good choice, old boy.

  • @reallifenamesake About his Gran, isn't it?

  • @Boabyo I'm not sure who this song is about, it was written in the aftermath of the breakup of a long time relationship Dulli had been in. Dulli did, however sing this song for his grandmother when he visited her.

  • @reallifenamesake So the story goes, but the song had actually been written a couple of years earlier (it appears on the 1989 Jugula demo). And Greg sang it quite a few times on the 1994 Gentlemen tour.

  • @littlethumbkin That may have been the same tune, but not the same lyrics... right? It's discussed in the "Gentlemen 33 1/3 book" (which is amazing).

  • amazing!!!! a very underatted group, i beleive "Gentlemen" was in the top 5 albums for 90s. Marcy is great in this beautiful song. great band , great musicians and Dulli is a legend. thats for sure!!!

  • Holy shit! Thank god for Youtube! Never seen this-live with Marcy. Fantastic!

  • Oh my lord !!! this is breathtaking ... nowadays no one , no one can make something like this , i never heard this band before but thanks fucking god that im listening to this right now ... mindblowing !

  • "X" Marks the Spot

  • Among us Afghan Whig fans, this is a holy grail. This is a song that embodies so much pain and emotion, so much wanting and desire, so much hopelessness and fear...this just fits perfectly with those of us that live with pain more than 23 hours a day. I love you and fuck off at the same time.

  • @mikezes Perfectly said. And it is perfect on the CD, right after "What Jail is Like." For those who don't have the CD, trust me when I say that as amazing as each song is, when listened in order, while truly listening to them (not playing PS3), then take on a whole new depth. Simply one of the all time great CD's of all time.

  • @goby999 i agree with you there. and i cant stand people that just listen to music while doing other things or only listening to music while working out. music was ment to be taken in and for you to think about the meaning and feel related to the musician (at least thats what i do). there a meaning to every song (even if not a good one) and should be understood.

  • @omedicius

don't tell me what I gotta do, fuckbag.

  • @omedicius

dont make me repeat myself you fuckin' twat

  • @meinLiebsterFeind sorry come again?

  • @mikezes All my tears support you opinion

  • @mikezes

damn, bro.. ur pain is d33p...

  • @mikezes Brilliantly said! For all of you who don't own Gentlemen, trust me when I say that as good as this song is, after you have listened to Gentlemen straight in order (no shuffling) a few times, this song become even better (and more painful). Trust me.

  • @mikezes i couldn't agree more.

it's the touch of our souls

  • @foo2985 Totaly, dosen't mater from who you are

  • @mikezes

  • got the chills watching this.

  • This might be my favourite vid in all of youtube. This song breaks my fucking heart. I was at Reading 94 and I remember this performance really well because there was a girl standing next to me at the time who actually had tears rolling down her face as they played this. Seriously, you just can't put a price on that! Amazing.

  • Those of us who've listened to this song and understand are better people. Thanks, Afghan Whigs!

  • "Temptation comes not from hell, but from above."

Truer words may never have been sung in a song, before or since.

  • yeah...i could die now...just listenning this song!!!

  • This is brilliant!!! I love this band!

  • Gentlemen is my one of my favourite albums of all time.Met these guys on that tour in 1993 in Dublin and stood to the side of the stage since we bullshitted security that we were part of the roadcrew. I persuaded Greg to sing that song and in fairness to him he did in the end and blew everyone away.Went backstage afterwards for a smoke/beers and shared a few stories mainly with Greg and John who was quite proud of his Irish heritage.Lovely guys and would love to see them back together.

  • "Gentlemen" - one of my favourite too. Greeting from Poland :)

  • I was there. A little bit disappointed 'cause for a band like Afghan Whigs the right stage was the NME one, not the main at 4 p.m.!

However, great gig, great song, taken from one of the best album of the rock history (personal opion, clear!).

  • My god this song does something to me!!! i feel every single second of this song. I would love to listen to this track in the dark with someone special holding hands and kissing with passion and them feeling it like i do. I would whisper "we need no other..............". Beautifull song i could cry.

  • I'm your man. This song cuts to the core and I can't hear it if there are people in the room lest I weep in front of them.

  • @velvetbunny80s Couldn't agree with you more! I hope you find what you're looking for! This song kills me all the time!!!

  • singing this song all day in my head today

  • Cant wait for a reformation.....

  • Awsome song !!

I could listen to that all day long..

  • a wicked, wicked song.... love it

  • Does anyone know what genre this song is in? I think it's a blend of blues, soul, and alternative rock, but I'm not sure.

  • it's 100% pure hiphop

  • Ha! Yeah, you right.

  • Yes, that is correct.

  • my fave song ever....marcy mays is soooooooooo great..............B

  • Hard to believe this is 15 years ago.... where have the years gone?

Brilliant song from the best album of a brilliant band.

When the Wigs where on they were ON.

  • Curse softly to me baby

And smother me in your love

Temptation comes not from hell but from above

And there's blood on my teeth

when I bite my tongue to speak!

Amazing, amazing song! All the memories come rushing back.

  • what an album, what a beautiful song. Afghan remindes me both my youth and how a quality rock band must sound like

  • absolute classic song, from an album with not one bad song i tell thee! thanks

  • Great song and great to see a live performance of it.

  • This song got me through so many rough times. Young love is a hurting bitch. This song provided band-aid.

  • WOW.makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck.this song is like a spiritual experience.

  • All good songs should be.

  • Holy sh*t, I didn't think I would ever see a performance of this song. I am eternally grateful It is comforting to know that there are other fans like myself in this diminished world

  • I hear ya dude!! This is what music is all about!! This is beautiful and you actually feel it!! You don't get that these days!! I cant understand why they didnt make it big!!!

  • They don't make 'em like they used to.The Whigs never became superstars because mtv was too busy pimping hootie and the blowfish and other lesser, long forgotten bands.Anybody know where I can find a good live Whigs bootleg?

  • Brazil here, for those that mentioned fans around the world, great song!

  • i remember listening to this when i was like 14 or 15, blew me away. still so good. never got to see those boys unfortunately

  • nothing these days comes close...missed them back in the day too :0(

  • wow

  • 7 minutes of straight goosebumps wow. TAAAALENT

  • Right on.......

  • When they play the "top 100" songs of all time on various radio stations during holiday weekends, etc., this song is NOTICEABLY ABSENT!

  • There is a song by Placebo called Peeping Tom that reminds me a lot if this. It is sung by Brian Molko, but he sounds a lot like Marcy Mays

  • What a song! Still sends goose-bumps down my neck every time I hear it. Marcy Mays' vocals blew me away the very first time I listened to the song on the album. And what an amazing band. Greg Dulli is a genius.

  • great performance, this girl is amazing¡¡¡¡

  • Electric.

  • wonderful song in a wonderful album. I was shocked by this song since the first time I listened to it. Marcy vocals are so passionate, such a great song...

  • probably one of the best bands of all times... this girl's vocals are fuckin' amazing!!

  • Brilliant!!!

  • damn this tears me apart...

  • susan marshall propably is to busy wasting her time on singing it on key instead of with feeling. her version is simply terrible, unwatchable. Marcy is feeling the song like its her own. Damn i can listen to this on repeat and repeat (like i did with the cd version back in the day :) )

  • BTW, if you've read the book, you'll know that Greg told her how to sing it. Marcy said "Get out of here" and an hour later the song was done. Greg heard it and said "Wow!" Marcy's version is so amazing, so powerful. It doesn't get any better.
