Man, never new someone had footage like this...thanks bomber66...My wife tolerates but never got my being into the Whigs yet now she to listens after 18 years with me and the whigs...she stills assumes that I am in a bad mood when I put on any of ther stuff and calls it my angry music but this song alone is worth it all...the raw emotion, perfect music, perfect lyrics and perfect voice.... Hmmm great memories of the 90s and these should still be bigger.
Been loving this video since the day i saw it on youtube. Big whigs fan, and I usually never comment but would like to ask that if anyone has a better quality version of this (or the whole show) to drop me a private message or upload them to youtube for us to enjoy. Although I've never heard Scrawl before "My curse" I have to say this song makes me very curious about her songwriting. Her singing and commitment makes for an unnerving yet satisfing listen. I'm also glad I can finally see what she looks like!!
@babykesq I know the feeling. I've done that so many times over the years. I've lost count of the number of times other motorist gave me strange looks. I'd be singing my head off to '...And there's blood on my teeth when I bite my tongue to speak...'

damn, she nails it. Love this band. I met Greg Dulli and told him how much this album meant to me and he was so nice. We sat for a few minutes and talked about it. When i left the bar, I went over to say goodbye and he hugged me and said "Thanks for the kind words; it really meant a lot."

I made a top 5 list (People who have seen High Fidelity know what I'm talking about) of saddest songs and this was number one because it has so much emotion and feeling and it's about a very delicate subject and it isn't like completely just 'I hate everything.'
@Boabyo I'm not sure who this song is about, it was written in the aftermath of the breakup of a long time relationship Dulli had been in. Dulli did, however sing this song for his grandmother when he visited her.
@reallifenamesake So the story goes, but the song had actually been written a couple of years earlier (it appears on the 1989 Jugula demo). And Greg sang it quite a few times on the 1994 Gentlemen tour.
amazing!!!! a very underatted group, i beleive "Gentlemen" was in the top 5 albums for 90s. Marcy is great in this beautiful song. great band , great musicians and Dulli is a legend. thats for sure!!!
Oh my lord !!! this is breathtaking ... nowadays no one , no one can make something like this , i never heard this band before but thanks fucking god that im listening to this right now ... mindblowing !
Among us Afghan Whig fans, this is a holy grail. This is a song that embodies so much pain and emotion, so much wanting and desire, so much hopelessness and fear...this just fits perfectly with those of us that live with pain more than 23 hours a day. I love you and fuck off at the same time.
@mikezes Perfectly said. And it is perfect on the CD, right after "What Jail is Like." For those who don't have the CD, trust me when I say that as amazing as each song is, when listened in order, while truly listening to them (not playing PS3), then take on a whole new depth. Simply one of the all time great CD's of all time.
@goby999 i agree with you there. and i cant stand people that just listen to music while doing other things or only listening to music while working out. music was ment to be taken in and for you to think about the meaning and feel related to the musician (at least thats what i do). there a meaning to every song (even if not a good one) and should be understood.
@mikezes Brilliantly said! For all of you who don't own Gentlemen, trust me when I say that as good as this song is, after you have listened to Gentlemen straight in order (no shuffling) a few times, this song become even better (and more painful). Trust me.
Darcy of Scrawl sang this song on the ablum. i heard that Greg never sang this song live. wondering if this is true. allways wonder what this song was about.
I wrecked this cd... my 9th cd featuring this song... worn away from playing... THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING THIS. That soulfull voice... the power of the lyrics...
Never, ever, EVER in my wildest dreams would I've ever thought I would see this footage. This song's been on my soul ever since the first time it hit my ears
This might be my favourite vid in all of youtube. This song breaks my fucking heart. I was at Reading 94 and I remember this performance really well because there was a girl standing next to me at the time who actually had tears rolling down her face as they played this. Seriously, you just can't put a price on that! Amazing.
Gentlemen is my one of my favourite albums of all time.Met these guys on that tour in 1993 in Dublin and stood to the side of the stage since we bullshitted security that we were part of the roadcrew. I persuaded Greg to sing that song and in fairness to him he did in the end and blew everyone away.Went backstage afterwards for a smoke/beers and shared a few stories mainly with Greg and John who was quite proud of his Irish heritage.Lovely guys and would love to see them back together.
My god this song does something to me!!! i feel every single second of this song. I would love to listen to this track in the dark with someone special holding hands and kissing with passion and them feeling it like i do. I would whisper "we need no other..............". Beautifull song i could cry.

I hear ya dude!! This is what music is all about!! This is beautiful and you actually feel it!! You don't get that these days!! I cant understand why they didnt make it big!!!
They don't make 'em like they used to.The Whigs never became superstars because mtv was too busy pimping hootie and the blowfish and other lesser, long forgotten bands.Anybody know where I can find a good live Whigs bootleg?
What a song! Still sends goose-bumps down my neck every time I hear it. Marcy Mays' vocals blew me away the very first time I listened to the song on the album. And what an amazing band. Greg Dulli is a genius.
wonderful song in a wonderful album. I was shocked by this song since the first time I listened to it. Marcy vocals are so passionate, such a great song...
susan marshall propably is to busy wasting her time on singing it on key instead of with feeling. her version is simply terrible, unwatchable. Marcy is feeling the song like its her own. Damn i can listen to this on repeat and repeat (like i did with the cd version back in the day :) )
BTW, if you've read the book, you'll know that Greg told her how to sing it. Marcy said "Get out of here" and an hour later the song was done. Greg heard it and said "Wow!" Marcy's version is so amazing, so powerful. It doesn't get any better.
Saw them back in late 80's at The Whiskey, what a great band. Their music touches my soul especially this tune with Marcy.

When they play the "top 100" songs of all time on various radio stations during holiday weekends, etc., this song is NOTICEABLY ABSENT!

There is a song by Placebo called Peeping Tom that reminds me a lot if this. It is sung by Brian Molko, but he sounds a lot like Marcy Mays

What a song! Still sends goose-bumps down my neck every time I hear it. Marcy Mays' vocals blew me away the very first time I listened to the song on the album. And what an amazing band. Greg Dulli is a genius.

susan marshall propably is to busy wasting her time on singing it on key instead of with feeling. her version is simply terrible, unwatchable.
