Have never commented on youtube before but have to say that this video is the most phenomenally interesting turorial i have ever seen/read. Ridiculously well put together and explained. Thanks for taking the time and effort.
@nellkirsten if the distance is 1/4 and the time delay is 1/4 then in front of the speakers the signals add together. Behind the speakers the farther away speakers are bot 1/4 wavelength farther away and 1/4 wavelength delayed. 1/4 +1/4 = 1/2 and 1/2 wavelength offset gives you maximum cancellation.
Man this is awesome interesting. Just some questions: Are these configs only possible with cardioid subs? I don't get why else you would measure for the time delay at the front of the speaker, if you'd use omni-subs. And also: What happens in the vertical plane using these techniques? I mean you put the second sub underneath the stage right? Doesn;t this increase sub-spill on stage? Thx, this is killer!
Dave I want to thank you, I run a small meager system with 4 folded horn subs. Anyway I started playing around with delay as I have a problem in a couple of clubs with power alley. I found a happy medium lastnight the lows were filling the room nice and punchy right where I wanted it to be.
@thaflyinsoundman At the Coachella pics for the Sahara tent last year we did exactly that setup, the non polarity version. And I use a form of the non polarity rev version all the time. If ya do a quicksearch of my blog for "subs" there is lots more info.
hey dave ive done some playing around in mapp. any chance you could take a look at my configurations and tell me how they might sound in an arena environment?
@FLIPP0P0TAMUS I hope to do another video soon on how to read your predictions to see how good they will sound versus coverage as well as offer some arena solutions.

Sorry for my lack of knowledge...but why 1/4 wavelength?

Hey Dave, are there any videos or explanations on what L'acoustics use in their cardioid configurations with the LA4 and 8s? Is there any delay used?

Man, I love your videos... How did you make it look so good?

Wow, that is absolutely amazing! I can't believe you're taking the time to explain this stuff. Thank you so much!

I think this is why Rage Against The Machine sounded bloody terrible at Reading Festival a few years back... it was a right mess...
great vids, very interesting, good to get some confirmation of some of my own theories.

Your videos are like crack... I'm addicted and I want more! haha
On a serious note, how often do you set your subs up like that? Is it a usual thing, or is it something you do on a special occasion basis?

Thanks for all your videos!
Also, plz update your blog more frequently. I'd really like to see what you've been up to all this time :)

Another question. Instead of cutting the frequencies you DONT want, why don't you sum the ones you DO want?
FLIPP0P0TAMUS 1 year ago
@FLIPP0P0TAMUS The whole point of cardioid subs is to reduce the SPL behind the pa, there aren't any frequencies you want to sum!
