Even Skip Away had Gentlement and Formal Gold(two more brilliant horses). Cigar, you could say he doesn't win all those in a row if Holy Bull doesn't get hurt. Alysheba even had Bet Twice and Ferdinand.

Rather, I said it is difficult to compare a horse like GZ who ran so sparingly with a top horse like Damascus who was asked to run constantly and at all distances whether in top shape or not. Easy Goer at age 4 ran the Suburban at 10 furlongs just three fifths of a second off the existing track record(set in a weight for age race) in 2:00 flat and was giving 12 to 18 pounds away, and in the Met Easy Goer gave Criminal Type MORE weight(8 pounds) than SS gave(5 pounds) and gave the rest of of the field up to 15 pounds. These two examples are in 1990( and it is more about the spread in the weights and how much weight you give away than amount carried),i.e. Fall Highweight(most over 130)
Zapp was a monster on the track. I would certainly put him alongside the three most devastating US thoroughbreds of all time: Secretariat (the best ever, imo), Dr. Fager and Spectacular Bid. In fact, Zapp and Sec have the two highest Beyer Speed Figures ever at 128 and 139 respectively, and both made almost identical explosive runs in a race - Sec at the Hopeful at 2 when he made a lightening quick last-to-first at the 1/2 mile, that shocked even his jockey, and Zapp's mighty Vosburgh in 03.
Ghostzapper remains in my opinion, the most underrated race horse in the history of the sport!! Mind blowing speed, more devastating than a category 5 hurricane over a shanty town...the few handicappers that took notice rated him the fastest horse in living memory...the bugatti veyron would need all 1200hp to come near him...he was that good! You were obviously on Mars between November 16,2002 and May 30,2005. Cigar and Sunday Silence were nice race horses but Ghostzapper could crush both Cigar and Sunday Silence in his sleep. Easy Goer is the only of the named horses with any hope of matching Zapper's vicious speed. Take a look at his Tom Fool win, 1:20.2 after ripping through the first 6F in 1:08.1, or his Metro' Mile 1:33.1 after trotting a half mile in 44.2,6f in 1:08.2 without breaking a sweat.

Ive seen many great Easy Goer is right up there with the Bid, Forego, any many other racing immortals.
IMO, the best horses since Bid are John Henry, Alysheba, Sunday Silence, Easy Goer, Holy Bull, Cigar, and Skip Away (in chronological order). These 7 horses were automatic Hall of Famers and truly great horses that can rightfully be compared with the best ever. A small step below are Slew O' Gold, Precisionist, Best Pal, AP Indy, Silver Charm, Tiznow, Ghostzapper, Invasor, Lava Man, Curlin. Others post 90':Criminal Type,Gentlemen,Formal Gold,Free House,Point Given,Smarty,Alex,Barbaro,etc.
Clearly you didn't watch the 2004 Breeders Cup Classic or the 2005 Met' Mile!! With the exception of Easy Goer none of the other named horses at their best could beat Ghostzapper at his best! The only reason I agree with Easy Goer is because that 1:32.2 still frightens me to this day! He simply could have ran 1:31 and change if he wanted. That performance told me that he was capable of beating anybody at their best!
Ghostzapper Ive watched every breeders cup race event ever, I have them all on tape or DVD, yes I did see the 05 Met Mile also, and I believe that a healthy zapper is a dominant great racehorse, but Alysheba, Forego and many others were just a good and could give zapper a run for his money...Alysheba did run 1:58 at the classic distance......these horses are fully capable of beat zapper any given day.

And Sunday Silence was the most underrated horse in history, not GZ. Easy Goer and SS had each other too also prove how great they were, not just all of Easy Goer's 120 or better brilliant performances. GZ had Aggadan and ran a couple of races a year. Even Skip Away had Gentlement and Formal Gold(two more brilliant horses). Cigar, you could say he doesn't win all those in a row if Holy Bull doesn't get hurt. Alysheba even had Bet Twice and Ferdinand.

In any way you compare them, beyers at the ages of 2 and 3, amount of 120+ beyers, competition, great rivals, running 11 times per year, or running a few times per year, Bloodhorse top one hundred book,etc, it is Easy Goer. Easy Goer ran vastly,superior figs at 2 and 3 years old, and only ran a few times at the age of 4 and they were comparable(122).

Rather, I said it is difficult to compare a horse like GZ who ran so sparingly with a top horse like Damascus who was asked to run constantly and at all distances whether in top shape or not. To my knowledge, no one has bombarded people here with dozens of posts extoling Damascus's virtues, rationalizing his losses, or assessing whether or not he belongs in the top 10 all time.

He won ONE important race, ONE!! The Classic. I suppose that the Iselin, a Grade 3, the Tom Fool and Vosburgh are BIGGER than the Belmont Stakes,Jockey Club Gold Cup,Travers,Whitney,Suburban,Champagne,Wood Memorial and yes they both won the Woodward(your horse won by a head with a 114 beyer), and he got beat by 7 lengths by Scrimshaw.

He was given a championship because he routinely trounced a very nice horse, Is it True, four times that year and got beat once over a peanut butter track that he hated. Please learn something dudette. Now of course SS was a different horse. SS was the only horse who could take full advantage of Day's typically atrocious riding and beat him by a nose and desperate neck in two great races. They both ended up top thirties all time horses. Only seem to affect him? Those grapefruit size ankles and knees affected him twice at Churchill Downs causing him probs, and was why he wasn't as great around sharp turns! Those ankles and knees were frequently being treated with many remedies, and forced him into retirement after a few races at four. Heck, not only was Easy Goer faster and superior to GZ, so was Sunday Silence. SS was an all time great just like Easy Goer, and that is obvious. No shame at all in losing two races by a nose and desperation neck due to typically atrocious Pat Day riding to another all time great horse. Your horse was only affected by those qrtr cracks vs. Scrimshaw in allowance, Valid Video, Great Notion, and he could not run more than 3 races. Easy Goer's tactical speed was absolutely fine and perfect(was ridden atrociously in the Preakness nose and Classic-desp.neck), except for ONE race, and that was the 89' Breeders Cup Classic when he used a 12f race as a prep for the Classic, and had an extremely grueling,historic campaign,while SS was completely well rested and as fresh as can be taking off the summer and fall. And Easy Goer had the worst grapefruit size ankles and knees a champion horse could have. A little facts for you.

Easy Goer at age 4 ran the Suburban at 10 furlongs just three fifths of a second off the existing track record(set in a weight for age race) in 2:00 flat and was giving 12 to 18 pounds away, and in the Met Easy Goer gave Criminal Type MORE weight(8 pounds) than SS gave(5 pounds) and gave the rest of of the field up to 15 pounds. These two examples are in 1990( and it is more about the spread in the weights and how much weight you give away than amount carried),i.e. Fall Highweight(most over 130)

Zapp was a monster on the track. I would certainly put him alongside the three most devastating US thoroughbreds of all time: Secretariat (the best ever, imo), Dr. Fager and Spectacular Bid. In fact, Zapp and Sec have the two highest Beyer Speed Figures ever at 128 and 139 respectively, and both made almost identical explosive runs in a race - Sec at the Hopeful at 2 when he made a lightening quick last-to-first at the 1/2 mile, that shocked even his jockey, and Zapp's mighty Vosburgh in 03.

Ghostzapper remains in my opinion, the most underrated race horse in the history of the sport!! Mind blowing speed, more devastating than a category 5 hurricane over a shanty town...the few handicappers that took notice rated him the fastest horse in living memory...the bugatti veyron would need all 1200hp to come near him...he was that good! To effortlessly glide through fractions of 22,44, 1:08 irrespective of the distance made him virtually unbeatable...he could beat ANY horse when sound!!

How can you compare him to, say, Damascus who ran more races in 5 months than G did in 5 seasons? They ran D whether he was well or ill & he won major stakes races at every distance from 7F to 2 mi. He ran 16 races as a 3 yr old including 2 races per month for 7 consecutive months. How would G have done if he ran that often & at distances up to 2 miles?

The New York Times described the Meadowlands Race Track that day as "extraordinarily fast" to the point where a moderate 3 year old filly Ready Jet Go tied the six-furlong track record of 1:08 2/5 in a minor stakes race. Your statements should accurately reflect the facts in their proper context. The win was good but not the "near world record" performance you would want to have us believe took place!!

You were obviously on Mars between November 16,2002 and May 30,2005. Cigar and Sunday Silence were nice race horses but Ghostzapper could crush both Cigar and Sunday Silence in his sleep. Easy Goer is the only of the named horses with any hope of matching Zapper's vicious speed. Take a look at his Tom Fool win, 1:20.2 after ripping through the first 6F in 1:08.1, or his Metro' Mile 1:33.1 after trotting a half mile in 44.2,6f in 1:08.2 without breaking a sweat.

@ghostzzapper - I love Ghost to death and would rate him up there with the great, and fast as F@ck Dr.Fager. Horse like Ghost , Secretariat, and Dr.Fager(Just as an example) could win at 4-5 distances, carrying high weights, and As was the case for Big Red and the great Dr, they also won on the Turf . All wonderful, Top Shelf horses.

They say truly brilliant horses come along every 25 to 30 years...looks like we will have to wait another 20 years or so before the next one shows up because the last one came,delivered and retired with hardly anyone taking notice!!

@ghostzzapper - You also forgot the 1:59 flat at 1 1/4m in the Classic. If he had really tried he would have easily ran 1:58 and Change...Easily. Easy Goer was a Fast fast horse, but Zapper Buried some VERY good Colts during his career, and did it with ease(Aside from ST.Liam), not to mention how muchhe suffered from Quarter cracks his whole career. Who was the last horse to post a 128 beyer.....Zapper :) Cheers.

IMO Alysheba(McCarron admits F'ing a few big races for him), E.Goer and GZapp (who didn't even make BldHorses100??,prhaps only 11 starts BUT HE WON 9!! 2004 BCC 1:59.02 still stands) were 2 big wins or an injury away from EASY TOP10. @heartofalion77 Zapp considered sprinter like SEC and still acclrting thru finish of BCC. would have LUVED!! to see time could have pulled for 1/2 this day, at rate he was traveling, continuing to pick up speed not unreasonable at all he could have hit :25 high or better had he been asked to go another quarter. Ghostzapper was a total freak. After reviewing several of his races I have to conclude he was the best horse since at least Skip Away and probably better than him, and even Cigar. You'd have to go back to the 1970s to find horses that could run with the zap.

Easy Goer was a great horse but he was a big oaf who lacked tactical speed, which is why Sunday Silence - also a great horse - was able to beat him 3 of 4 times, and I suspect Ghostzapper would have beaten both of them.

This page has had alot of debate concerning greatness.What are people's criteria for greatness?On this page about Ghostzapper, there is alot about brilliance/talent (as reflected in speed figures), versatility(winning at sprints and routes), and beating the best other horses in big races. Given the changes in the breed, in training,and the philosophy of "handicap" racing, how much does durability,long-term consistency,scope of accomplishments, and weight carrying still matter?Whats most vital?

A book by Nick Mordin entitled "Winning Without Thinking" provides a useful insight towards understanding the impact of the "modernization" of the racing industry and how it influences our views of the champions of the today. For me winning the big races on the big days remains vital. That is why in only 2:24 seconds, the unimaginably brilliant Secretariat imprisoned our souls forever!

I agree that the criterion of judging greatness is changing and will continue to do so. And I agree that the trend is to place emphasis on performance in "big" races. The Europeans have long placed greater emphasis on brilliance and singular performances than on weight carrying, durability, or the number of stakes wins.Many of the most revered European horses made fewer than 15 starts with many having less than 10.And as handicap racing declines, the US will continue in such a direction as well

Obviously,there are those that feel very passionately that Ghostzapper was an all-time great and the best horse horse since Spectacular Bid. And there are others who disagree.Ultimately,this is all subjective. Yet,these types of debates are what makes horse racing so appealing.Personally, I do not feel Ghostzapper is an all-time "Great".But,I do feel he was a very very good horse and had exceptional talent.This page is dedicated to Zapper,so enuff of my critiques.

I do agree with your same arguements being in industry for so long these arguements do make racing so special..Zapper was a great horse, a superior talent, but I remember watching Easy Goer go 1:32 for mile in the Gothman Handicap at 3yo not even a full handride by Pat Day, "That is greatness" so many great talents come in and out of the game we can argue like this forever, I do respect Zappers Talent, its guys like us why the legends of these animals will never die....

I think Easy Goer is perhaps the greatest animal Ive ever seen run I actually saw the belmont, Travers, Woodard, Jockey Club Gold Cup Wins, an amazing horse, he has the wrong jockey, should have used Cordero or Pincay, but thats just racing, but take nothing away from Sunday Silence a supreme animal whos trainer The Bald Eagle knew racing tactics and how to beat Easy Goer. Ive seen many great Easy Goer is right up there with the Bid, Forego, any many other racing immortals.

IMO, the best horses since Bid are John Henry, Alysheba, Sunday Silence, Easy Goer, Holy Bull, Cigar, and Skip Away (in chronological order). These 7 horses were automatic Hall of Famers and truly great horses that can rightfully be compared with the best ever. A small step below are Slew O' Gold, Precisionist, Best Pal, AP Indy, Silver Charm, Tiznow, Ghostzapper, Invasor, Lava Man, Curlin. Others post 90':Criminal Type,Gentlemen,Formal Gold,Free House,Point Given,Smarty,Alex,Barbaro,etc.

Clearly you didn't watch the 2004 Breeders Cup Classic or the 2005 Met' Mile!! With the exception of Easy Goer none of the other named horses at their best could beat Ghostzapper at his best! The only reason I agree with Easy Goer is because that 1:32.2 still frightens me to this day! He simply could have ran 1:31 and change if he wanted. That performance told me that he was capable of beating anybody at their best!

Ghostzapper Ive watched every breeders cup race event ever, I have them all on tape or DVD, yes I did see the 05 Met Mile also, and I believe that a healthy zapper is a dominant great racehorse, but Alysheba, Forego and many others were just a good and could give zapper a run for his money...Alysheba did run 1:58 at the classic distance......these horses are fully capable of beat zapper any given day.
