Thanks for posting this, created using the Yamaha TX81Z - a cool FM synth. The producer Babyface at one point had two TX81Z units in his studio, both of which he kept set to a bass patch, one detuned from the other. This became a part of his signature sound. The best synth patches for this classic synth can be found at manymidi.com
good demo - takes me back - used to have two of these. funny thing is that the tx has quite bad note-off noise, and you need to gate it in order to use it professionally. However, by sampling it, you can an even more energetic sound, as the whole tone is shifted up as you play up the keyboard. contrary to widespread belief, it is not necessary to multi-sample it to get this effect. Listen to whigfield 'Saturday night' as an example - thanks...
so the TX is being used for the bass and the organ patch at the start, and the 3P is just providing the filtered stab that you're continually tweaking, correct?
This is a beautiful machine and if you're able to pick it up as a second hand unit is a real bargain too. You can find the Lately Bass preset in many house classics like Adeva - Respect for example, good sound here.

@sync4000 Thanks. Regarding the 81Z for one the TX802 has better 16bit convertors which give it a cleaner sound while the TX81Z is 12bit and one reason the 802 will not sound the same is because the 81Z doesn't just have sine wave operators but various other waveforms like saw, triangle and so on..On the DX-100 it's called "solid bass" and sound different cos like most DX's it only uses sine wave operators. My fave is the 100 though cos it sounds even more dirty than the TX81Z ;-)
I can't hear any grittiness on TX81Z sound. Instead, when i had DX11 i immediately notised how low quality DAC's it had, it was noisy and totally lacked that pure solid bass that could be achieved with TX81Z.
AFAIK TX81Z has 16bit DAC's and some older models used those 12bit ones.
Fast googling shows that people are repeating rumours to each others and everyone is claiming something about this. :D
I found page from " a.tom.x " who says in its TX81Z page that it is 16-bit.
And guys at Sequencer.de big FM dedicated page should know thing or two about Yamahas FM synths, but still.. even there seems to be some confusion about this DACs.
They put DX11 and TX81Z to same category based to their DACs and i know that sound of those two machines differ like a night and day. :)
@vinyljunkie07 Ok to clarify the tech side of things. As to DAC used the TX802 uses a PCM54H 16bit device. The TX81z uses a YM3012 DAC - is a 13bit convertor. The PCM54H is a straight up parallel16bit input where as the YM3012 is a floating point device which uses a 10bit data word (mantissa) with the remaining 3 bits used to set the exponent. This method of conversion provides an overall bandwidth equivalent to 16bits. To understand how this is true, research binary number systems =)
There is something about the sound of a tx81z that I absolutely love, even above certain analog synths. It's grungy and custom made for laser robot acid pumpkin techno
@VincentsVideoVisions Hahah yea innit, the DX-100 is my fave out of all of them, unfortunately they hate me as every DX I had broke...I know the TX seems like a DX-100+more waveforms but really the 100 is so much more, the easy tweak-able interface and the seriously lo-fi 12bit sound make it one of my fave synths. I'd rather have a crappy DX-100 over a new DSI synth ;-)
@vinyljunkie07 I love the sound of them, but they seem to sell for really crazy prices these days. If I can find one used fairly cheap, it's mine. (dx100) ...
@VincentsVideoVisions Exactly that's the problem, twats like me make them popular by recommending them and telling people the whole of UR used them lol
Mad Mike said he modified his with Oberheim filters even
@VincentsVideoVisions Haven't got a clue, it was in a old interview with him, he didn't say much more other than his DX doesn't sound like every one else's and he's moded it with OB filters. I'm going to guess it's a external made filter, it's easy to do and you could make a whole load of em and rack em up in a'la modular fashion. The DX-100 was my first synth I stole from my school years ago.
During the last part of the video when you're fiddling with the JX3P, are you using the JX3P as the MIDI controller for the TX81Z or are those JX3P patches?
Thanks, you can pick up those early DX and TX synths from Yamaha dirt cheap especially in the US...just need to find some one who will confuse the DX-100 for a kiddies keyboard heheh cos of the mini keys.
The DX was very cool in the 80's then the most un-cool instrument ever arround the 90's now sort of cool again lol funny how shit goes
Thanks dude! I did this real late and I just unpluged it forgeting to save the sequence on the MPC!! I saved all the patches and shit but not the stuff on the MPC lol I might try to remake this tune live on youtube in a 10 min vid later on
So I have a DX-7 but your videos make me want a TX81Z.....looking on Ebay right now. I'm such a gearslut. I like that there is that much versatility in a 1U rackmount. I'm going to post a 2000XL sequence I did soon.....
I love the DX-7 mk1, the TX is a cool 4op synth in 1U indeed, the fact that it's multi timbral is the great bit also it offers other operator waves like saw unlike the older DX line which was only sine. I also have a DX-100 which is in for repair and that's my fave sound wise.
good track

But this great house chord tune you play in the end and filter tweak isnt the TX81Z, is it??

So SICK! Can you enlighten me as to how you process your drum samples? Do you comp each one individually? They are so CHUNKY!

Doing Lately bass with TX802 wont happen for the same reason it can't be done with DX7 -TX81Z just has different parameter set.
