If you want to know more about Sean Flynn and the inspiration for this song, read Michael Herr's "Dispatches"...the best meditation on the U.S. Vietnam War experience.
Does anyone know anything about the recording of this version? In particular, the "bass" that starts becoming more prominent at 1:32 - it sounds sort of like a fretless bass through a vocoder or something. Anyone know exactly what it is, if not that? Some of the soloing is pretty far out for an actual bass, but who knows...
Sean Flynn body was found by John Rambo just hours after he was killed by Communist North Vietman in a prison camp in 1982. Flynn was killed by guards after they intercepted a radio message sent out by Colonel Troutman. Thye knew Rambo was in the area & that Communists hate the sound of freedom.
This was an emotional tragedy that was left out of the final cut of Rambo 2 due its tragic nature and for good reason.
God bless you Rambo and God bless the United States.
You know he heard the drums of war When the past was a closing door The drums beat into the jungle floor The past was always a closing door Closing door Rain on the leaves and soldiers sing You never, never hear anything They filled the sky with a tropical storm You know he heard the drums of war But each man knows what he's looking for
@jiggybilly im glad someone apart from myself can notice the symbolism but the clash are agreat band and their song london calling sounds like the future to me.
To write a song about a war journalist is a most memorable thing. And to be straight to the point is another. This is where The Clash knocked the sense out of others. This is a track that enables you to smoke and drink till the early hours: thinking of someone who you didn't know and will, most likely, never be found. RIP Sean Flynn.
Hmmmmmmmmmmm, lets see who made a more lasting impression with more diverse songs and has the Rolling Stone album of the Decade(80's). Well that would be the Clash and the Album would be London Calling...Oh but the Jam is better....yeah ,ok Dylan ,keeep telling yourself that.
Well my sincere apologies for offending your friend and hurting his feelings.Merry Xmas!!! The thought of mentioning the Jam in the same sentence as the Clash unnerved me a little....Being they have been a top 10 favorite band of mine since 1981....

I usually listen to this record on our old revived grammophone, lying on the floor. It makes me really feel the atmosphere.
