I saw Bruce play in front of 100,000 people in the Ivory Coast of Africa on that 88 Amnesty tour, there was some concern on what reaction the audience would give him. That audience was the most energized, enthusiastic audience I've ever seen and i have seen over 700 concerts in 25 years. That audience was entirely Africans who had never heard of Bruce and his power, that power of music won them over. Hands in air, all smiling, all unified. Priceless
I had the privilege of being a photographer on both Amnesty tours in 86,88 and later shows. I felt the power of that music being onstage with all the artists that have taken part in sharing their time. In 88 NOBODY was paid on that tour and no tour like that has been attempted since. None. Nowadays with the world fighting about money it was a different time and no video, no being in the audience can match being there. Occupy Wall Street? How about occupying our souls first.
But wow wow wow ...what a great gathering onstage , fantastic and let that be a lesson how we are God on earth , taking care of each other , not "god" somehwere else .
i love how people get so pissed off at the ten dislikes. Why let someone get at you like that? Chill! Great song! I love it! He messed up a little though,im sure the pressure was enormous! Thanks for the upload.
This version is like looking and listening to an album on a turntable instead of a CD. Not perfect, but pure. And it captures the very best of Peter Gabriel and his band. Raw emotion, great music. Thanks for posting.
Wow, so many people have missed what this video shows. There was a time, not even that long ago, where people believed. Watch the last 60 seconds of this video, the unscripted fun and passion, and show anything like it from the last 10-20 years. You can't, it's over.....humans are circling the drain now, rushing ever faster to that final....
Who is the performer who sings at the beginning with him? I love Peter Gabriel, beautiful on the outside and on the inside. The guy performing with him is awesome too!
@jellyfishstampede Believe it or not, I was at the concert promoting the "SO" album, at the Marcus Ampitheatre in Milwaukee. Peter introduced the singer you mentioned. I don't remember his name, but Peter called him the greatest singer on earth. The were direct from Africa, and that same singer and his group opened up for Peter. It was the greatest concert I've ever seen. And I've seen some great concerts.
@kickdrum09 hmm-saw SO here in Houston in 1987 and he didn't have the African group with him-but saw him a few years later with the Secret World tour and he had them then.In fact SO hadnt really hit yet so the arena was only half full-couldn't believe it.Then Sledgehammer hit and I was lucky to even get a ticket for Secret World.
Witness one of the many examples of the unifying, healing, barrier-breaking power of music - thank you, Peter Gabriel, for a song that will resonate in me for as long as I live!!
I have this song on one of the live vids he put out.. I wouldn't trade those memories for all the gold in the world... Still brings tears to my eyes. Most profound lyrics...

What an awesome video of a uniquely moving song! A couple of questions, though-
when was this filmed (taped)? What concert was it? One can see that it was in Japan. What was the cause for this benefit?
I only recognized only a few of the artists.
PDmac, why would you call Jackson Browne an ass monkey? What does that even mean?
I also saw Steven VAn Zandt, but I do not know many others.
Does anyone know what the African lyrics are in middle of the song saying.
