Well thanks. I basically chose that design because it was simple to build. I had planned to build a "real" boat of about 7-8m and wanted to try the metal working out first. The basic design of this punt is not so fancy in europe. In the end you have a doryboat with transoms wich is almost the same as the furthest spred kids sailing class "Optimist" over here. The construction feels very stiff due to the three massive keels and the massive gunwhales. Maybe I'll start building my No.3 next winter.
nice build but very strange bow design, i have never seen this before, boats we have here in the USA are a lot more pointy to handle the ruff seas. So far how is the boat holding up it looks like there should have been more brace in the bottom? I'm a welder myself and honesty amazed how it actually came out. i like that you had no skills in welding and still pushed on thats really cool
Well thanks but its looks as if you dont speek english - if you would, you would have read that I built this punt without any metal working experience. Of course I had no Idea of welding. :D
But the punt is still swimming and in one peace. ;)
Hey, nice video. I am 14 and I really wan't to build a boat, but I am not sure if my parents would let me wield or buy a wielder. Is there an alternative? Also how much did this cost you in total?
Well just build in Plywood. Check out Hannu Vartialas site for detailed info on building the punt in wood. Its easier and cheaper. Material did cost me about 600EUR as far a I remember but tools not included of course, esp. not the MIG welding machine.
hi well done on this build. I think I will give it a go.Do you think it would be possible to build a small wheelhouse or would it make it very unstable in wind?
@rattycheesep: No I dont think thats a good idea. The boad is rather narrow and building a wheelhouse will not make it better. If I was to build a second one I think I would just add some width. Maybe 20cm or so which can easily be done in the plany by just altering the bottom plate and the transoms. sides can stay the same.
I woul also go for a smaller Motor, maybe 6HP. Du to the scoop-rocker line of the boat it is not getting on the planes very easy. It is definitely made for slower riding.
@shananaganz5: Thanks for the tips. Yes it has been a lot of fun and the boat is still working fine. If I find the time I might be thinking about a new project cause I think building in Alloy is much faster, easier and not really more expensive than in wood (having built boats in both ways)...
@Ibringthetruth1: No not really. It does about 15 Knots using a 15Hp 4T Yamaha. But its a nice little boad for fishing in front of the homedoor. And you do not have to look after ist too much. ;)
That is actually a very good job for your first aluminium project. While I have never built a boat I do weld lots and you can minimize your thermal distortion by starting your welds in the center and work out to the end of your material. Also try not to get one area to hot. Weld maybe 2 inches or so and then go to a totally diff area. Basically jump around lots with an eye towards working from the center out. Again, great job!!
I don't know what was funny, the smart ass comments, or the fact that I said and did all those comments when I did my first project.... Great job, and I look forward to seeing a video of it in action.
what thickness sheet did you used? And how much was the entire project in materials? Thanks Erick
I want to turn my 15' fully inflatable boat ino a rigid bottom hull if want some info or pics give me your email and ill share the project. Some tips and ideas will be helpfull.
That's some REAL chicken face.

@TheRoccoloco1
Hi, it is in 3mm. I would not use thinner sheets cause the get too hard to weld for the beginning.
Why dont you post your project here? Many of us would be interested - me included as I am also thinking about building an alloy hull RIB. ;)

Which model was that?
niilo789 1 year ago
@niilo789 It is based on the 15.8 Fishing Punt. But I have altered the plan a little. Added some length and higher gunwales basically.
