at "Sharing and Discovery" i cant see any file sharing, pub folder sharing or printer sharing etc... all i can see is "network discovery" .. i cant figure it out
I was ok last winter doin between xp-vista with one cable and passworded. Now I wanted to do it with an old newly acquired xp pc with two LAN but could only share internet(when vista is not fooling around with its IP again as vista is only good for, and also installing drivers when not ask)
Now I have made your tut work. Problem: I can only access one of my two ext hhd. In xp, I see both of vista's ext hdd F and G, but can't get into F.
@Ghis1964c Well Vista does not like sharing drive letters, Sometimes i can share them and sometimes i can't. also do you have one of those ext HDD that will put itself to sleep, Vista will not wake it up for a remote connection ether, so it will let you see it but not access it, some of the policy's in Vista are crap.
@basiccomputerhelp After that day,I've been able to access my HDDs. But after re-start in order to save all these settings,I couldn't even get the internet and home-network to work via vista to xp,but I could see all of those "f-k-- network discoveries" like pc-isabel, pc-de-vista, etc and what not, except my own xp. True vista's polits are crap.I don't even let any of my pc sleep, even less hdd.I leave nothing to themselves in windows; if they can't find whats wrong, they can't maintenance;)
I did windows 7 and windows xp. Never done this before and thought maybe youtube has the answers and sure enough it did. thx for making this video. I was able to get it up and running with your help.
no dice dude. i already had all the sharing options applied through network control panel.. my desktop finds theshared computer and folder from my laptop however when i click to on the folder i had shared it simply gives me error "windows cannot acess *folder etc.."
i've been trying for hours with many approaches and still.... no dice, any ideas?
@jayce1983 The thing i hate about Vista is sometimes it just does not want to work right.
One suggestion i would think is to check the firewall on all the computers. I know Norton use to like to block file sharing a lot. And sorry it took so long to get back to you
I want to set up wireless a nw between my desktop which runs on xp and 4 laptops running on vista. Would you recommend setting it up using my desktop and change workgroup name on the laptops or setting it up on one of the laptops and change the workgroup name on the desktop.
i would change the name on the desktop so that you only have to change on one computer. Now i have a Custom setup i had to change 10 different computers.
As far as I can tell windows vista will not let you do the root drives. I have tried. I did it on XP with no problem but a warning. My friend, who is a network tech, says that it is hard you have to edit the registry.
i know vista fucken sucks. only think i can think of is to ask "is File Sharing enabled in your Network and Sharing center, in the control panel?" my friend said that if folder sharing is on and not file sharing then you can see what is in the folder but not access it.
another probable solution is to restart the computer with the file being shared.
@basiccomputerhelp Yeah but the thing with this is i have done exactly everything that enables shit. For E.g Permission is all up to scratch i have made it so anyone can access and change and copy and use and non Readonly and whatever. But i click it and it pretty much says. "Hey I'm Vista and i suck dick, thanks for trying to use one of my faulty features :-) have a Shit day :)"
I have had more problems with vista then i care to have. When i have a computer to fix and they say they have Vista i am like "NO". i have a another computer in my house with vista that will not access another computer on the network at all. sorry i can't help you anymore most of my clients that use networking have ether moved back to XP or up to 7.
I need help please!!!! I want to share a whole partition and when i want to access from my other pc I get a error "(Network Error) Windows cannot acces\\........." what should i do??
very common problem and the most common solution is, on your computer you do not have Guest Access turned on, in XP it is on buy defult but not in vista, this is different from the guest user. i talk about it around 2:56 it is done buy shutting off the Password protect sharing
im trying to set up wlan have wirless router and internet modem dlink g-604 t and 3 machines 2 vista and 1 xp visa machines see each other but cannot access shared drives file sharing is on ive shared the drives open port 80 still cannot share files want to set up xp machine as file server but have all machines accessible any help would be appriciated
thanks for the info, but i have a problem, when i try to acces my desktop form my laptop it says "Windows cannot access \\(my desktop name), check the spelling of the name, otherwise there might be a problem with your network" so i hit diagnose to find the problem BUT then it says "(my desktop name) is not a valid host name"? what does this mean and do you know how to fix it? if so please enlighten me with your knowledge :P
there are a few reasons for this. one and most common is both computers are on different workgroups some older windows computers where MSHOME and others where WORKGROUP the workgroup name should be in your My Computer properties
the other is a firewall could be blocking access to the computer on your network
well i know its not the firewall cause they both are turned off, both my laptop and pc are both Vista.. what would the problem be then? (the workgorup thing i left it as it is)
do you know your Computer Name. in your My Computer properties. Now that i think about it a lot of people that have more then one computer, have both computers with the same computer name and they have to be different.
but to do it manualy you need two backslashes \\ (make sure they are not / this slash) fallowed by your computer name
too fucking slow

Sad thing is you can't share the root of a drive on Vista, at least not easily. As for how I don't know because it is not a common need

best thing i can think of at the moment is both computers are on different workgroups. Windows XP and Vista have different default workgroups
That and sometimes when you buy a computer from someone like dell they will change the workgroup at the factory.

hi, i was wondering if u could help me, i have chosen a folder that i want to share.
but i cant view the shared folder (i.e. my laptops netowork) on the other computer.
what is the reason for this??

there are a few reasons for this. one and most common is both computers are on different workgroups some older windows computers where MSHOME and others where WORKGROUP the workgroup name should be in your My Computer properties

duhwinghung 2 years ago
another question that you may have already done. but have you enabled file sharing on vista, in vista it is off by default. the settings are at 2:42
basiccomputerhelp 2 years ago
erm yes im sure they are on,
duhwinghung 2 years ago
well then i would have to say try manual access.
you can do it with \\COMPUTERNAME and see if it assess the computer
basiccomputerhelp 2 years ago
sorry this may be a silly question but how do i do it manually
duhwinghung 2 years ago
do you know your Computer Name. in your My Computer properties. Now that i think about it a lot of people that have more then one computer, have both computers with the same computer name and they have to be different.
