I think this is a bit too dramatic soprano for her, in my opinion. She has a very light beautiful tone and head voice, while this song was written for slightly deeper, more richer tones....I like her rendition and her voice, as always, but I prefer it sung by someone with a heavier thicker voice.
i first came across to her "ave maria" because of an argument with my friend. topic was: which one hayley or sumi sings the best. i fell in love with her voice and bel canto technique immediately. she sings so passionate and emotional, so my favorite sposa is from sumi again
A very beautiful rendition of this haunting piece with plenty of understatement (which is essential in Italian opera as far as I'm concerned!). This is extremely tasteful and the melody sounds surprisingly modern in spite of having being composed nearly 300 years ago. Always a good indication.
I think at the beginning of the aria she found a little string, the flavor to the words and music, and managed to sustain the mood htroughout. Beautiful rendition.
This is very beautiful indeed.. Great technique : look at how little she opens her mouth on PPP notes... All the sound is concentrated in the mask... Great breath support as well, of course.. Emotion, quality of sound.. just great !
Superbe!!! Musicalité parfaite, finesse des attaques, subtilité du phrasé ,version remarquable!Sumi Jo ,si délicate, nous épargne les grimaces de certaines...Un enchantement pour nos oreilles et nos yeux...
I'm positively surprised: great breath control, tonal beauty, clear diction, in a repertoire traditionally not tailored for Sumi Jo. But she's regal here, even if she could have used her easy trills with greater mastery. But a voice is not like a robot and trills are difficult to produce when tired or out of focus. Lovely, top-notch rendition of this moving aria composed for Venice's carnaval.
yes, wonderful, magnificent and all that, but yet when Cecilia Bartolli sings it I hear the story, the depth of the sorrow, the long and desperate loneliness of this forsaken woman.Sumi Jo-tender .....tehnique.
too slow? bad italian?.....I don t know about that.... what i know is what you, Sumi Jo, make feel in my heart each time i hear your voice..THAT is what i know, an for that, i love your art. keep make me feel so touch and blessed.
ummm...sumi jo is actually fluent in italian. she underwent her formal training in italy...and i find that the only people who complain about her pronunciation are people who can't even speak the language anyway.
Such an impeccable interpretation! I don't understand why people could be so childish with their comments. Languages are languages and spoken language sounds absolutely different to a language utilized for singing. For all I care, Vivaldi's Italian is not even used anymore--lost in antiquity, so, why even dare say one must assimilate to perfect a certain language? For artists such as Miss Jo, assimilation to another culture is already part of their lives.

There is a reason why this is one of the most difficult pieces perform. The trill is not in the style of Vivaldi and the diction is not all that great. Cecilia is by far the best interpretation.
Sarebbe interessante.

There's a difference between just knowing the mechanics of a language and actually speaking, no, feeling it! This is something very difficult to achieve unless you are willing to give up your own mother language and inmerse yourself in the new culture. Not to mention the fact that this is only possible when you live in a country where it's sopken.
She's put a lot of effort into producing a beautiful sound here, which shows, but I find the phrasing awkward in places, and there's no emotion whatsoever. A shame.
I think a big part of that is that she isn't taking nearly as much liberty with the tempo as she could. I'm of the opinion that tempo in this particular piece should be flexible - at least enough to get the message across. Jo kind of sings it like she has a metronome going.
