Now, here's a man attempting to ride a bicycle. But he's having some trouble isn't he? Would you like to know why? Because he's a scott! *chuckle chuckle* Now! Who wants to hear a good story about a bridge?
...move forward 100 years and there are 10 buses, 200 cars, 25 taxis and 15 police cars speeding along these same streets every hour!! Mind you those elegant houses are probably worth £3.5m today!!
hahahaa. they didn't have to many fat people back then. AND THAT GUY WAS FAT! IN THOSE DAYS IT WAS PROBABLY AMAZING TO SEE SOMEONE THAT FAT IN 1914. TODAY THAT SIZE UNFORTUNTIATELY IS THE NORM.
In those days, if you were fat, you were rich. No such thing as an obese poor person in those days. You worked your fingers to the bone if you were poor.
chubby lost the bottom half of his body to a kraut cannon shell... although he survived the war, he had no need nor the desire to learn how to ride a bike anymore.
This looks like it was filmed in Twickenham especially the last bit with the woman with the pram its the road in between York house and York house gardens i recognise the bridge and the wall i was born in Twickenham and recognise this well and the very last 1 second shot is by the river side in Twickenham
I am sure the scene at the end of this film is shot in Twickenham near where I grew up. I recognise the bridge from a road called Riverside in Twickenham, Middlesex. You can see it on Google street view and it looks just the same today.
what really got me were the people in the background. I just love how that little boy ran back to his mum or something and stand there to watch what's going on.
This is funnier than alot of modern stuff I have seen, this is what comedy really is you dont need to make joke to make people laugh, thats what I like Laurel and Hardy and charlie chaplin, visual comedy at its best
All the sceptics on here, this was made in 1914.I can't understand the doubts, look at the dress, NO cars about, it's slapstick a la Hal Roche, which this feature reminds me of.
I find it comforting to find that videos of fat people crashing into things have always been funny. Sometimes I fear that society is degenerating... but in reality, the more things change the more they stay the same.
I'm just stating that type of fat as healthy fat. While not entirely healthy to be fat or overweight, obviously, we must remember this was pre-"Junk Food" era. This was the time when people actually struggled to get fat. Unlike now, eating peanut Jelly, Big Apple donuts and a quarter pound of Cheese burger everyday can quadruple your body size in couple of weeks, days perhaps.
@fishpreacher It was one of a seriesof films featuring a character called "Pimple" (the guy trying to keep the cycle upright. Fred Evans (nephew of Will Evans, the Music Hall comedian) did about 200 of these shorts largely poking fun at other, more expensive films.
Their take on Napoleon has him being attacked by a group of suffragettes. Google "Fred Evans Pimple" to find out more.
A real delight...Has anyone any information as to where those locations are? One thing is for certain, those roads will be absolutely full of cars now...
"Don't worry my chubby old pal, it's 1914! World War One has just begun! A couple of months running around dodging cannon shells on the front line, and those extra pounds will simply fall away!"
How many frames per second were these shot at? Was there any conversion involved in getting them onto youtube? i.e. I thought films of this era were roughly shot at 12fps which caused the action to be sped up however the clips I've seen so far here look like they're at a relatively normal pace.
