Great shot. Did you happen to record any footage of the Van Nuys Local? I worked at Lumber City during my High School years (77-78) and remember the local spotting loads of lumber out back. Power always seemed to be a SW1500.
Did KevPeter actually sound the demise of our beloved railroads in his post..? Wake-up call for Kevs'Peter! From ultra-efficient locomotive orders in the "billions" to crews actually having A/C (locos)and family-time, to trains actually running on schedule. Railroads like the FEC, WSOR, PHL, KCS and CN are booming like never before. JD
its like the SDP40s that GN ordered in the 1960s. The SDP45s are like normal SD45s but with steam generators for passenger service (it explains for the extra 6 feet behind the radiator section). When these engines were purchased they worked in SP passenger service until Amtrak took over then worked in San Francisco commuter service until 1985. Then they worked in frieght service & as backup power for amtrak.
these were passenger sdp 45 orphaned by Amtrak, they were used on the coast commuter runs during the week and pulle revenue freight on the weekends, before Espee sold the commuter lines to the state of California in the late eighteis!
@DASCO2136: SP never chopped the noses on any of their high hood units. The single, large radiator fan and immensely sloping nose instantly sets that unit apart as a GP20. The GP9 behind it has the 2 smaller radiator fans on it. The differences would even more clear is the numbers weren't blurry- that's assuming you know the number classes on SP at that time.
@TrainDr101 - 3rd unit is a GP20. You can see the single turbo stack, and it has the "cutout" sill above the air reservoir that later-model GP20s had.
If i saw a train with that power today i would have a heart attack

What a whacked loco consist-A SDP-45, SD-9, GP-20, GP-9(R) and either a GP-50 or GP-60...
choirboyfromhell1 4 months ago
@choirboyfromhell1 that's a GP40X, not a GP50/60.

I love it! Classic SP with mars light and miscellaneous power.
I watched the SP growing up and actively train watched in starting in the mid-70s.
There was no such thing as a "typical" SP lash up, but this lash up was typical of the SP.

Thats a wierd looking SD45...Looks more like a GP40P, I had to look twice at the axles to determine what it was.

erie-lackawanna had "freight" SDP-45's as well. 5000 gallons of fuel, Croxton yard in NJ to Chicago non-stop.

@TrainDr101 well i say it was a GP9 because i read in a magazine that some of the last GP9s SP recieved from EMD had chopped noses
DASCO2136 10 months ago
@DASCO2136: I know someone who can confirm/deny either of our claims. I'll ask him what he thinks the 3rd unit is.
