I also made a vid on how to clean a tank but im not sure if i made the right steps since i havent cleaned my tank in a month, so can please look at the vid and tell me where i missed the steps thx
Lay off the man. I don't see discus or other finicky fish in the tank, which means the fish he's keeping is hardy enough to handle a big water change. On top of that, it's one single fish. I'm sure the "massive" loss of bacteria (yes, that is sarcasm) won't affect it. And even if it did, there are plenty of bacteria growing on the gravel, plants, ornaments, and filters.
I have a 60g, which is home to 38 very happy fish. I do 50% WCs every week, no chemicals, and I haven't lost a single fish.
never remove 90% of water out ...... you wont have BB in your tank due to removing massive 90%. also you should clean fake plants it has black algae all over them. Also only recommend adding water ager into fresh water before pouring into your tank. at the end of your video. i dont see your fish swimming around . so it must be hiding and stressed. i recommend 25% weekly water change.
I'm not bashing, just trying to offer alittle advise. Do weekly water changes of 15-20% and add your stress coat to the bucket of water. Doing massive water changes depletes your tank of beneficial bacteria and is also very stressful on your fish. Everytime you do a massive water change like that you a recycling your tank, not a good thing. If you must do a large volume water change, and it should never exceed 40% I recommened using * Special Blend * it contains beneficial bacteria, Great stuff
Beautiful tank, beautiful home! You are a wonderful...teacher is the right word? I wanted to say explainer lol but that isn't right either. Anyways thanks so much for this very informative, very entertaining and wonderfully upbeat video series. You really seem to care a great deal for your fish and their happiness and it's nice to see that, most people sound so condescending and mean when they explain this kind of stuff to others, especially on you tube. Happy fish keeping!
i need expert help and please awnser this! my molly is always with her mouth open and just lets the water flow take her arround my aquarium she is always in the middle and is very still i want to know whats wrong
There is nothing wrong with massive water changes on African Cichlid tanks as long as you match the ph and water temp. In fact large water changes will induce the fish to breed. I happen to be lucky in that my water is hard water from limestone springs that the city only sand filters and uv's....no need for any chemicals at all. I do a 25% percent weekly water change and every once in a while do a 75% or higher. ... i wake up everyday to new babies....
ur doing so meny things wrong I don't know where to start cichlids should hav a rock only tank no plants, ur taking too much good bacteria out with that level of water change, u should treat the water and check temp in a bucket before you put it in the tank as puting it straight out the tap can burn the fish with the clorine and stuff in tap water no wonder you only have 1 fish
I don't think you should be doing a 75% only twice a year. It can stress the fish out when you do a change more than 50%, and when you only do a change 2 times a year... I would recommend you doing a 25% water change once a month. :)
Hey Ichiban, do what you do man. Don't worry about the negative people. Its like thumper said, "if you can't say nothing nice, you shouldn't say nothing at all". lol! anyway nice tank and we are all learning as we go.
Think about how the fish live in real life . In rivers streams and stuff. When it rains the Water is changed . Ao doing 75 percent change isn't bad you just have to make sure the water is conditioned. You should actually contion the water you put in the tank not put conditioner in the tank then water. Iv done a 100 percent change once by moving my fish in a bucket. It's like buyig them from a store to you're tank that's a complete change of water.
@1ownjoo2 75% is bad because of the water temp, nitrate levels and so on. 25% is recommed instead. I went to walmart and bought a 10gallon water jug and keep my spare water in it. Make sure to label it FISH WATER with a mr.yuck sticker on it.
nitrate levels ? Water changes reduce nitrate not increase it. Your water you replace in the tank should have 0-10 nitrates. If its higher its poses a health risk to you lol.. Call your water company if you actually have nitrates in your water.. I have 0
I only clean the tank once a month or so... I love how everyone is saying that I'm doing it wrong.... My fish are always healthy and my PH is always correct! The only reason I lose fish is because african cichlids tend to eat each other since they have teath and all. Anyway thanks for your comment and not completely bashing me without giving me the opportunity to explain myself. My method works fine for me and I always have healthy fish and a pretty clean tank.
75% change isnt bad, if you condition the water, and make sure the PH is the same as the fish tank water. Iv done 50% water changes for a week everyday once when i had aot of ammonia and nitrites and i still have all 22 of my fish
well 75% i was told was to much for one reason, the drastic drop in the level of water stresses the fish out, which as we all know stress in fish promotes disease like white spot
how much you do depends of the type of fish, goldfish are like swimming pigs lol and thus are very much so a 35% a week with the gravel cleaner
tropical are much cleaner so id say about 10% with every 3rd week a gravel clean
extra clean in parts if you have a pleco cos they mucky to lol they shit alot
That is a good question. While re-fillng my tank I am constantly monitoring the temp of the water going in the tank. Once I am back to full I am usually around 85 degrees. I have never had an issue yet. Thanks for watching!
@Ichibanstunter 85 degrees are you serious ???? do you know absolutly nothing about fish ? should be about 76-78 degrees at that high a temperature ther will not be much oxygen in the water
wow...........you neglect a tank and proceed to demonstrate your complete and utter lack of knowledge about tank maintenance/cleaning. Dumbass posting a fish care video on youtube...... sigh....... little bit of intelligent research on Google would have been nice bud.
Thanks for taking time out of your day to insult me and my method of cleaning. I feel very sorry for you.... Also, I dont think I know you personally so how the fuck do you know if I neglect my tank or not???? Anyway, I do a deep cleaning of my fish tank twice a year and this video is an example of how I do it. On a regular basis I actually only change about 33%... FYI I have never had any issues with fish or my tank. Thanks for the comment and research how to get a life on Google bud!
This is exactly how i clean my fishtank as well and i've never had a problem with my fish, being a cichlid tank (which is my fave as well) or a community tropical one.

Too much water was removed. Make sure the added water is the same temperature as the tank water. Try to treat the new water in a bucket before adding it. You shouldn't add all those chemicals in such little water when the fish are there.
As has already been pointed out, way too much water was removed. Taking that much out all at once is a great way to shock fish to death. Yes, the water looked dirty after he was done, but that's typical since he stirred the gravel. It's impossible to get every single particle, and that shouldn't be the goal anyway. Too many chemicals being used. There are natural ways to get rid of algae, and alot of ways to prevent most of it to begin with. All in all it's not a bad looking tank though.
It is not a Jack Dempsey and he wouldn't know one if it was. I'm going to be as nice as I can..REMOVE this video..U are clueless and what you are doing is insane. Other than that please sell your tank... Also giving the fish crack to calm them down is NOT a good idea...FFS!
doing 25% is just cleaning a little in ur aquarium what i suggest is move ur fishes into a big bowl and get the some water in ur fish tank then clean about 100% of all there
you should add your stress coat to the water your adding as you fill it not the little bit of water you have in the tank , and like i suggested you took out to much water , i would do a 25% every week or 50% once a month..
My tank (5ft,4ft,3ft) which hold a terrapin has gotten murky and swampy. The filter isn't reaching the bottom on the tank and I don't know what to do to help it T_T
I would suggest adding either a stronger filter or adding another filter. I would also look into some sort of bottom tank filter. Also limit the amount of natural light that is getting to the tank.
Why is your filter so strong?

Never do more than a 30% water change, your tank loses all its cycled bacteria which takes weeks to develop in the first place.

thing that bothered me is on a tropical tank you have a heater
according to the instructions on the box of a heater you have to have it switched off 15 to 20 mins before removing from the tank.
i would not be removing it but the water level would go down and the level would be past the heater
so... 20 mins heater off time + 1 hour clean tank time + at least 1h30 mins heating back up to optimum temp = 2h 50 mins
is the fish going to be ok in all this time?
kaleluk31 2 years ago
@kaleluk31
Thats why you fill the tank up with water around the same temp as the fish tank water.
1ownjoo2 2 years ago
