well, due to overwhelming demand from youtube commenters, we've decided to pull outland from the abc1 schedule*. you'll have to be satisfied with all the other nuanced gay characters on australian tv (ie: that kid from neighbours on channel 11) *as if
@phaedri Well, I'd swear I've met half these people at the Sydney Dr Who meets, and the rest in fandom here in Perth, so I'd say, yes, the writers *definitely* know fans :)
@Lochsley Same. I'm gay, love science fiction television/movies etc. But not one of these characters looks in any way relate-able. It also looks painfully unfunny.
@Lochsley its not really stereotypical. usually any depiction you see of a gay guy is some white buff abercrombie type who is shallow and only into fashion. this is hardly that
@jonatanblack01 They're still camp as tits though, and like teehee "black holes" every 5 minutes judging from this trailer... there are gay people out there who aren't obviously gay, I suppose they just don't make "good tv" though. Some of us gay people don't see being gay as a lifestyle and enjoy the same range of things as straight people but just happen to be attracted to people of the same sex.
@sweetcatatoniauk so what? you do realize don't you that your obsession with not being camp is just as homophobic as a straight person who doesn't like gay ppl period. just as there are straight girls that are tomboys, there are gay men who are camp and not camp. why do you have a problem with a depiction of it on tv? stop trying to fit into heteronormative ideals and just know there r different types of ppl out there. who r they hurting?!?!! jesus.
@jonatanblack01 Woah woah woah, I didn't say I had a problem with camp men being on TV... what I do have a problem with is the representation of gay men on TV as nearly always being camp, it would be refreshing to see a gay character where them being gay is merely a sidenote and not something that totally defines them.
@sweetcatatoniauk That's the point of this show - five queer characters, one of which is camp. The other four aren't - hooray! You got what you wanted! We're all happy now, yeah?
@theoutlandinstitute Only one is camp? Are you sure about that? lol, I guess campness must be subjective then. They also seem extremely cliched and one dimensional characters to me, but I suppose that happens in sitcoms, and I'm only judging from a trailer.
@jonatanblack01 I do not have an obsession with not being camp, or ever tried to fit in with "hetereonormative ideals" it is just the way I am - apparently you can't seem to just accept that is the way some people naturally are, making you the one who has a problem. I wouldn't suggest camp men put being camp on, and I find it insulting you would suggest men who are not camp are putting it on.
@sweetcatatoniauk just as u find it insulting that non camp men are putting it on, i find it equally insulting u think camp men ARE. the was the point all along...
@jonatanblack01 Did you not read anything I typed previously? I said in my last reply that I never have and never would imply that. Either you're trying to twist what I'm saying to create more of an argument that you're struggling to win or you're just thick. So which one is it?
Wow Please Give this a SECOND season. It's too good!

Wow. Do the people writing this shit even know any fans? I'm guessing not. Easier to laugh AT the geeks than understand them.

The ABC budget wasn't big enough for both a gay drama and a sci-fi series so it came up with this!

How many overt stereotypes can you combine into one? As a 'homosexual science fiction enthusiast', I find this very difficult to relate to...
