I saw these guys in Cleveland around 1985 and they did this song with some random guy they pulled out of the audience to play the basic chords involved. Then, one by one the band members left the stage leaving this guy alone w just the drummer. U2 were at the top of their game that night. What seemed like the entire crowd was singing along while the band returned again to finish the song while this guy played with The Edge and finished it out. An awesome, one of a kind moment. Thanks!
@jorgoshki thanks for the link , :) what a song i agree and well said such a great last song and the guitaring For this song I love it so >>Flaweless thanks again jorgoshki made my day . 80;s music has a special sound to it .....
... I was there in 1987 ... great souvenir !!! J'en ai encore des frissons ... on chantait encore "40" vingt minutes plus tard en sortant du concert ...
moment of surrender is a class tune, but it is not the song to close any u2 show. 40 should be back for good, it should never have gone away, its an anthem to leave any u2 show, i miss the crowds singing the chorus on the way home, i really do.
@callummcphail Sure but they did that for the Vertigo tour and it proved a rather tired concept really. U2 is about moving forward. 40 is an amazing song however.
@callummcphail I get your point but that's not what I mean by progress so much. U2 likes to move on artistically regardless of album sales or album charts. See "Pop" for example which took a beating but is considered innovative and ahead of it's time by most fans and critics today. No line is also not a charts type of album. Anyway, the forward concept continues on their tours and they always like to have new openers and closers. That is all I mean. 40 is a great closer though. I get that.
@anacrobat89 listen, i think personally pop is one of their best albums, i also personally think nloth is also amazing musicallya nd creatively, probably edges 4th best album, and quite possibly adams best!
i think mos is the worst possible way to nd a show, the song is not uplifting enough for me
as for talking about innovation etc etc, i`ve been into u2 since 1981, so spare me the fucking lecture!
@rianpop I think it's quite the opposite really. Bono did wear his heart on his sleeve during this era but seemed more pompous. U2 took a lot of heat then because of that. Just watch Rattle and Hum and tell me he wasn't way over the top there. The Bono from the Zoo era was more of a satire.
Seems to be a black strat, in 1:40 you can see the 2 upper single coils. I think he played the guitar the edge used and this was a strat at this tour ;-)
He uses a black strat. You can see it at 1:19. That guitar has been used for years for that song. You can see it in the Vertigo DVD from Chicago when they play 40.
THis kind of off topic but I would love to see Bono support Barack Obama for President. The reason being is that Bono better than anyone else talks about America being an idea. Obama inspires us all to think along the same lines so that we can regain our moral standing in the world. If Bono spoke, Americans would listen.
Thats funny you should say that..Barack use the u2 songs just before he goes on stage....How funny..Change is good..I didnt like him at first but i do know..If it could be i would love to see obama/edwards..God will see the truth and see us feel light again..Power to you and god bless..christopher..
:)Awsome song, this is my favorite by U2.I love U2 and I hope to see them perform,I may be able to in like a year or so.Amazing!THANK YOU U2 FOR BEING AN OASIS IN THIS DESERT OF CRAPY MUSIC!!
I saw U2 live Vertigo Boston and they were hands down the best live band i have ever seen.. this from someone who now works at major concerts regularly for my job and has seen over 80 bands live. I was so happy that they closed with this song like in the old days!
"40" is such a beautiful song. Even when it's played as the traditional closer for their concerts. Bono looks so confident in this video. Confident without being the over the top rockstar he was 5 years later not that it was a bad thing

Does anyone know what kind of guitar Adam is using for this song? Looks a bit like a Strat? Cheers

Actually Edge plays many different guitars on every concert, mainly Gibson Explorer.
His associates has said that he uses almost twice as many guitars as other guitarists every concert. (From Wikipedia, so can't be totally sure)

why do Adam and Edge switch instruments in this song?
salilparikh 4 years ago
because they did in the studio, edge played the bass because adam couldn't make it.
