Rotary is a hard setup to understand kind of, think of a circle with a gear looking thing in it it will have like 4 lobes spining, it basically uses a wierd shaped circle which will be your cylinder and the piston is the gear type of look, you should search it because it's kind of hard to describe, theres alot more going on, but tons less moving parts.

Piston is your normal engine with one piston per cylinder usually 4, 6, 8, or more, operates on 4 stroke cycle intake compression power exhaust in a up and downward motion. Down intake vaccum, compression is when the piston goes up so it compresses the air and fuel, power is a downward motion when the fuel and air is ignited and they expand creating power, exhaust stroke is when the exhaust valve will open and push the bad exhaust air out, and repeat at a faster rpm.
