It's not my place because...? I'm sure he's famous for his conducting style, but if he came to my university I probably wouldn't be the first to ask him for a clearer beat pattern. Ten bucks says the LSO would sound just as good if they played this piece without a conductor.
Sorry just watched it again... his beat pattern is pretty clear, it's just incredibly jerky from time to time. I'm not saying he's a bad conductor, but I still think he is holding the baton wrong.
I wouldn't say he's holding the baton wrong, he just has a different style than the usual. Someone in a university ensemble I'm in told the conductor that he couldn't see where "1" was. The conductor replied, I don't conduct beats, I conduct music. Your job as a musician is to count beats.
I thought that that was well summarized and to the point.
A good conductor can do both. I can count the beats fine, but how do I know that the 30 other people in the orchestra are counting with me? The conductor has to keep people together first and foremost, and Tan Dun doesn't really do that. He focuses on one part at a time and disregards the rest. If you get lost while he's conducting, you'll probably stay lost... I'm hardly a musician though, I'm a trumpet player. ^^
Love you

On my computer, the audio seems to be about a beat behind the video at 28 throughout the rest of the piece. Is anyone else having this problem?
drumcoda 3 years ago 2
are you referring to the 28th measure? if so, im having the same problem.
NiceSpidersEatPizza 3 years ago
yes this is quite disturbing... maybe I'll try to only listen to the audio...

FYI: the rules state that you have to be 14 yaers old to win

The short holdl is a bit unorthodox. I like it though. It makes his beat pattern more precise for me. Less whippy. I find him to be extreemly clear.

His conducting is very followable.

man he can't hold the baton right... i love the masterclass videos the orchestra does though!

Its not your place to say if he conducts correctly or not. He's a world renowned conductor.
