5 ways to speed up your Mac

One of the better tutorial videos out there, just three remarks.

1. You can use Finder and its search feature to remove applications completely, no need for third-party apps, they aren't even as thorough as Finder. Look at my channel for a tutorial.

2. Cleaning caches can actually slow down your Mac, as Mac OS X has to recreate the content which it otherwise could just fall back onto.

3. Onyx is also not really needed, as all it does is execute the scripts Mac OS X does daily, weekly and monthly, and repairing permissions is not a cure-all and just relates to Apple specific apps.

In conclusion, someone with a Windows background, used to tinker with third-party apps to speed things up, has probably the need to the same in Mac OS X. I was that way, but now I run my Macs without any Onyx, AV-software or cache cleaning and what-not for more than 5 years. And they are still fast.

X-Slimmer... Slims a LOT of space it saved me 10GB, it slims unused binaries E.G. if u r on PPC it will slim out all the intel code and vice versa. It will also get rid of unused languages.

@united4life8190 go to about this mac (click on the apple on the left top corner) and it wil say the version of the mac but if you r really a noob go to system preferences and do to desktop & screen saver and on the left there is going to say pictures there go to nature if you have a picture of a snow leopard that's your operating system but if you have a lion your operating system is lion but if you have a leopard your operating system is leopard :D

@sharinaalm Macfuse basically lets you browse through your windows partition in the Mac OSX finder, it's not essential and unless you want that functionality you can delete it...

1, you can change the hardrive in a mac aswell as the ram, and

2, always change ram so the slots match up, having a 4gb stick and 2 gb stick will stop dual memory, you need 2, 4gb sticks, its like £40 for 8gb now

I upgraded from 4gig ram to 16 gig ram on my imac 3.06 ghz intel core 2 duo processor, version 10.6.8 and I really don't notice much of a difference. I tried upgrading my vmware machine's ram to 8 gig (the maximum allowed) but for some reason it won't apply the new ram amount and it still runs pretty sluggish, this is the reason I upgraded the ram in the first place. Can anyone tell me what's going on? and can anyone tell me how exactly my ram addition has improved? I would greatly appriciate it

I have the new iMac 27" and I have a 4GB RAM (I think) and I have backed everything from my old 21´5" iMac and I have noticed it is going slower, and I´ve only had it 3 weeks! I would rather suggest to check file permission by some script which could repair them. Clean all logs, rebuild locate database. Also you can speed up mouse reaction.
