I hope you didn't use that method with the other parts because they are toxic. You are supposed to render the platters unspinnable, a hammer works just fine.
Hmm, I just couldn't remove the screws from the platter to my hard drive, so I torched it anyway. It didn't melt like in your video, but I think the heat from the torch did enough damage...
@SEGA128DC I couldn't either, so I figured the average Joe couldn't, either. After erasing the important stuff, damaging the outside, running a hefty magnet around it, and soaking it in orange juice, I figured that the cost of repair would far outweigh any benefit anyone could retrieve from it. Sure, I could burn it and all that, but it wasn't worth the effort at that point (for me).
..........the flame doesnt get hotter the farther away it is....its hottest where the center of the flame is. the "tip" is just the limit of the range. not some magical focal point where it multiplies the temperature
If you do this realize that you can suffer from carbon monoxide poisoning very easily if you torch stuff inside a building. Carbon monoxide poisoning is particularly damaging to your heart and brain.
Not all the data on that drive is unrecoverable. DriveSavers had a drive that was in a computer that burned 1700 degrees and they recovered the data in 24 hours. The best way to get rid of data is to use a program like the old IBM "Wipe" which you would launch from a bootable floppy then do a whole lot of passes writing 0s to the entire disk. For good measure use an electro magnet like we have at our shop on it a few times. Then do all your physical stuff to it.
I just checked with a computer repairman I know he assured me there is NO way the data on here is readable, The datasavers info they retrieved was from a computer that the drive was protected by the drive case and the computer case as well, it was not exposed to fire directly.
Oh it takes a lot to surprise me anymore when it comes to the average individual and computers. I myself work as a computer tech at a small mom & pop store. I see all kinds of stupidity like you wouldn't believe.
@mygaffer No one can recover that data. Tust me, i know exactly what i am talking about. DriveSavers and the like are, in fact, fooling people by saying stuff like that. if the platter has so much as a visible bump, there is no way of recovery. And, fyi, as soon as he took out the platter from the stack (assuming there were more than one platter which is true 99%% of the times), it was ALREADY impossible to recover. For anyone on this planet!

I know, I'm just giving you hard time. Really though, it is harder to destroy your data then a lot of people think.
