Great review!!!!opensuse 12.1 looks really nice but i tried to make a bootable usb drive of opensuse 12.1 using the liveKDE version with live usb install (in linux mint 11) but i can't get it to work.i get the first screen with the option to install or try opensuse but i can't get it to boot.can you help me?what am i doing wrong?
i have a question...maybe someone may know..i know by default, opensuse installs the nouveau driver..with my hp i always had issues installing my nvidia driver all the time i believe i only got it to work once on an older version of opensuse...my question is, Now i have a dell inspiron 15r n5110 and was wondering if the dell default graphics card will work out of the box or will i have to install it..and if so how will i do that?..sorry for this question that might be stupid..ty you all again.
thanks for the links! I'm trying to switch to KDE so I'm stepping away from Debian based for a while. I'll give OpenSuse a shot. Have you tried the newest Pardus. I really want to hear your thoughts on it.
It doesn't matter to me where the word comes from, what I said is it exists in Portuguese and Spanish AS WELL and we say it differently! If you are into linguisticts you could try to find the roots of that name, but all I know is the word exists in both languages besides German. Now, what made me comment here is that SuSSSAAAA is RIDICULOUS! And, Suse in English is likely to be pronounced Soozee, it's obvious. Good luck and peace! And don't f**king call me troll, that's not my business AT ALL!
Can anyone please tell me how on Earth can i make Kaffeine work on this damn thing ? I`ve installed the codecs straight from the website with the ONE CLICK option. It was a sucessful install but the damn thing still doesnt work. Im using the KDE version btw
From what I can see under the radeondriver community ubuntu wiki page your 200m express chipset does work.... what do you mean it didn't work? how do u know it was the graphics card? what driver was you running? or you left the default foss driver included in ubuntu?
@Synthematix what do you get as the output from typing glxinfo in a terminal? Specifically, for "direct rendering", "OpenGL vendor string" and "OpenGL Renderer String"?
I did not like 12.1. Not one bit, although I have gotten comfortable with Mint Debian which may have impacted my impression. I installed 12.1 on another hard drive and I thought is was too buggy and messy. I tried to put up with it for a couple days, and several updates. Ultimately I swapped out hard drives and will just stick with Mint. I love it it works so well. I also love suse but this release has left the first bad taste in my mouth of any suse release I have ever installed.
Dude, there is no "soossaaa". Where do you get that from? You English speakers have a problem dealing with pronunciation of words that don't belong to your vocabulary. In Spanish, or Portuguese, at least, we say the words as they are. A sounds like "á" from "out", E sounds like "é" from "every", I sounds like "í" from "infinite", O sounds like "ó" from "God" and U sounds like "ú" from "oo". So SUSE, reads "s"+"oo"+"z"+"ee", ok? (The "E" by the end of the words sounds a bit like "í")
@medeirosdez LOL us English speakers can pronounce words fine, if it doesn't say the origin of the word next to it pronouncing it would be anyone's guess you moron. Obviously we would pronounce it the english way by default.
I have already explained the pronounciation according to country down below in the comments section. The way you pronounce it is not the way it is originally pronounced either... Suse is of German origin and is pronounced "zu-zuh" I use the most common english pronounciation... so technically you are wrong and so am I. But we are not German. who cares
ahhhh there we go... I got German confirmation.... so Anybody that criticizes me for pronouncing it wrong and tells me their way is correct can Kiss My Behind! As all us English speakers pronounce it wrong ;) ;) thanx for the comment hehe
@Linux4UnMe Telling people to "kiss your behind" was RUDE man! I've been watching your videos there is quite some time and now I'm afraid I'll have to reconsider. JUST THAT. Good luck for you man.
@Linux4UnMe Hey! Uhm, I've said what I've said because there is the name "Suse" in BR-Portuguese my friend... And we read it the way I've said. Spanish speakers also say it like that. Now, where the name comes from I'm not certein... it may be German indeed, thus rendering our pronunciation incorrect indeed. It just surprizes me how much people care about my comment, even calling me "troll". That's curious if not funny. I like your videos very much! I've been watching all of them!!

I've just installed OpenSUSE 12.1 and your video has proved most helpful (especially with the codecs and the repositories).
Your reviews are, as always, full of useful information and great tips. I'm enjoying myself because I've not used SUSE since I bought the boxed 8.1 version (things have changed a bit since than! With SUSE 8.1 I did get all the codecs. That was before the lawyers were let lose :)
@mousegeek I remember that time :) I had bought the boxed version 6.0 of SUSE. There was a so called Professional version (server edition), which was expensive in it's boxed edition. But during that time it wasn't an easy thing to download it through a 56k or an ISDN, and that was only via FTP I guess, if it was available. A distribution that was considered user friendly over that era, was the Mandrake, which had been pushed by the french, and distributed through computer magazines :)
arch is bleeding edge and up to date with every new software package available..... repositories are much bigger than Pclinuxos.... no stability problems on this end for over 3 years
I had it when I clicked show menubar... and had some weird plasma crashes, idk what I did exactly.. I think it happend when I went to the package manager in Tast.. it froze up and crashed on me
Opensuse isn't that hard to learn to use... and there is alot of tutorials out there for zypper...
Otherwise it provides everything you need in the gui.... i'de recommend you read the zypper tutorial included in the description... that's about all you need to know to run Suse ;) I don't have suse installed anymore atm.
It used to take ages to add and refresh repos. Good to see it's much quicker these days. I think 11.2 and 11.3 were the last times I use SuSE. I remember moving from KDE3.5.5 to KDE4 during my SuSE days at any rate.
Not a bad review, but you shouldn't review a distro that hasn't been released yet. In general, Linux versions stabilize throughout their lifetime. So they only get better. But reviewing them before their release, equals reviewing a buggy version.
With a beta I would agre, but not with an RC, Not much changes between an RC and a Final release besides very very minor bug fixes... and if the bugs were noticeable, I would wait until the final release sorts them out... which isn't the case with Opensuse... it is stable and ready for review. However, With Mint 12 RC there is a couple obvious bugs... which is why I am holding off until the final version.
I used OpenSuse for a while now and I noticed that some really handy features, such as the one-click for Nvidia drivers, only become available a couple of days after the official release. And I noticed as well that some packages (for instance games) become available after a few weeks. OpenSuse is released 2 days from now (16 nov). That is 10 days after your review was uploaded. If you are using it for the last few days before your review, that's 2 weeks before release.
During such a timespan, plenty of bugs or minor annoyances can be found and fixed. So it's always worth while to wait until the final release. I have read a whole lot of product reviews. And even with quality release candidates there are many times that I have seen journalists rectify their review, because of some things they wrote about, that were solved in the final version. Therefore I believe in general, reviews of pre-release products should always be indicated as previews.
/root, /swap? why would you want to have 'root' on a separate partition? and.. i imagine you already know this, but you can't refer to the swap partition as '/swap'..
well, i've tried the opensuse rc, and the installer is buggy as hell, but you could just easily un-plug your main hd and let it do whatever it wants to the second one..
As for SuSe, haven't used it in quite some time, think since version 11. I typically just go with Ubuntu so I don't have to deal with anything. When the quarter ends I have to re-setup a new Linux install for next quarter, and I was trying to decide between Kubuntu, Ubuntu, and Arch, having used them all before, I know what to expect form each. Was going to test drive a few over thanksgiving break. Though now I'm interested in checking out SuSe again.
For those saying ii doesn't have as many packages as Ubuntu - well yeah, Ubuntu has the highest number, that's a fact. See the same thing in car videos all the time - "not as fast as the XYZ" - well yes, that's the fastest car in the world ATM, so by definition, it is faster than all.
I tried suse alongside ubuntu and it didn't put it in the grub menu. plus i can't stand the yast installer. but ubuntu doesn't have the drivers for my new toshiba sattlite laptop, so i might be forced.
lacks packages? well.. i would agree with 12.1 but suse usually has everything you can find with community repos + build service from my experience. Will take 12.1 a while to catch up.... I prefer archlinux anyways... no stupid waiting for new packages to update to newer versions of arch etc. rolling ftw ;)
@DancingMadRB3 I installed arch finally, but i gave up on it since i had no wireless. I just couldn't figure out the problem! I had linux-firmware installed, but nothing.
because if you install nvidia outside the package manager and get an Xorg update.... Xorg will update but not the nvidia driver because it didn't come from the repo.... so you will often get conflicts and bork your system
LoL I do use a password... but i edit out boring bits from my videos so i might of cut out that part :P
nice vid. i have suse11.4 on my spare machine it works good except it not really happy happy play with my wireless however it does run nicely on the machine
i'm familiar with this distro i have used it in the past on ver.9.x
and have ran red hat and fedora so i,m a bit familiar with how this one works
I know what your saying though; I have tried installing this distro before, and it never goes right. i finally just decided that Ubuntu was the only distro that is really going anywhere. So thats my main distro now.
@Linux4UnMe Hmmm how about not? Ubuntu is the most used Linux distro out there. Notice how Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu, and Ubuntu has a Unity which is much more attractive than other the standard Gnome interface. But to each is own I guess. Mint is 80% Ubuntu and Ubuntu has the most developers. I know at my company, the only thing we use for servers and clients is Ubuntu... But whatever man, enjoy Mint!
@BelaFleckFan As Distrowatch & forums mention, popularity there is trashy, meaningless. Look at the options there: week, month, 6 mths, yr, etc. It has nothing to do with user base, nor users. Only those crazzies who look at Distrowatch - like myself!.
Distrowatch seems ignorant to this site. On the topic: MINT - is different to LMDE. Pinguy is better IMO than Mint-Ubuntu. More respositories, better integration of rare but valuable software.
One of my multi-boot (8) distros was upgrade from Pinguy 11.04 to 11.10 - ruined it. But my other Pinguy 11.04 was unaffected, as were the other 6 distros.
@grey0powerlessnesss Distrowatch is a site dedicated to Linux Distributions, alternativeto net is just a site about software, to compare the two is pretty ignorant.
To say "MINT - is different to LMDE" when Mint is LMDE is also odd.
As far as Pinguy goes thats just another ubuntu/mint respin.
Always had problems with open suse and installing I gave up on open suse 6 months ago It is still having problems buy the looks of it fedorra is another one I have trouble with .
You know what? I can indeed change things "easily" that don't fit my taste, and even turn everything inside out. The point is though that a distro should offer a nice, default OOTB experience. But openSuSE doesn't look polished at all, rather thrown together thoughtlessly. There are many rough parts and edges, and I'm talking not just about the design here. This is not 2001 anymore, guys.
@SeltsamerAttraktor Well if KDE isn't to your taste, as you so put it "Thrown together", you could always go with the other interfaces OpenSUSE uses...
@lindsaymobil22 I _am_ a KDE user. I criticize openSuSE for its lack of polish here, not KDE. And that won't get better if I change from the distro's default desktop environment to something different.
Why are so many Linux users so oblivious to the many shortcomings and rough edges of the major Linux distros?
"You can change that" is not an argument, but rather the doom of the Linux desktop.
@SeltsamerAttraktor Look I didn't want to start a debate here! This is one of Linux's shortfalls straight away, users can never agree with each other! Anyway just because OpenSUSE give you an almost "barebones" KDE desktop in terms of styling, doesn't mean its a bad distro! Linux isn't all about the desktop, what makes a good distro is also how it works underneath all the polish of a desktop environment. Also, as I say, if you don't like the way its styled, the System Settings are there...
Any another program what makes opensuse better than the other distributions ??
SO this video is to people who doesn't know opensuse at all ?
Because we can do it all in the old versions ... u didn't talk about the new versions of the programs that come with opensuse ... what they bring ... well let's say that opensuse is still the best to me cause the others didn't make anything new ...
i used openSuse many times but NOTHING i mean NOTHING beats ubuntu's software catalog. In linux desktop world, Ubuntu is the only distro that has almost every software available for it like windows. (in terms of user friendly)
@Linux4UnMe i know linux mint is but i was just referring to the main distro which have many distros based on it like linux mint and zorin os, etc etc...
can you please..tell me what is the 'big' differences that we can see between Ubuntu, Fedora, and openSUSE? because they offered the same thing and that is Gnome 3..i'm still new to these distros..so please explain sir..thank you..
Noticeably? Different Package Managers, Ubuntu uses Unity on top of Gnome 3xx... Different default applications (somewhat) bout it. But apart from that They all have a different philosophy of implementation... for eg: Fedora introduces bleeding edge software, Suse relies more on well tested stable software but not outdated, Ubuntu... well.... unstable software/distro for non LTS releases and stability on LTS releases. I'm sure others might add to my list
@Linux4UnMe Sure friend to add to you Ubuntu is like apple in computer industry having led by Mark Shuttleworth and had distributed cd's freely through mail for years. Fedora is testing version of Redhat and Redhat is something you have to pay. Opensuse have agreements with microsoft and as I heard opensuse has paid royality for microsoft sake of sharing technology. I feel fishy about opensuse at all time. The most solid and true linux experience is in Slackware Linux. But it's too much techy!
@TheLolipro I prefer debian or ubuntu based distros. Mint is good choice if you are new to linux :-) Have to say I'm not expert but humble user so feel free to comment on my comment.
@rayyanputra The purpose of a distribution is to do just that: distribute (free) software in the form of a coherent, usable operating system. So they all offer basically the same software stack. Some might have small in house developed goodies, like Unity,Yast, the Mint Menu etc. But the main differences lie in the:
1. philosophy (un-/stable, stance on non free software, etc)
2. release cycle
3. target audience
4. package manager and the repos
5. purpose (general Linux OS or something specialised)
sounds like Slackware iirc hat automatically assigns the /home partition, confused me the first time cause like you I got "this partition already exists"
hhmmm. could be possible... but then again that would mean that the installer has already picked my /home partition size even though I am suppose to manually specify it.... doesn't make sense to me that this is what happened.... but i'll have to test this theory
the strangest thing is that it seems to me kubuntu uses a more updated version of kde 4.7 than opensuse and is more stable and snappier, despite the fact that opensuse developers have plenty of time more than kubuntu, also adding any weather widget and many others crashed the system invariably.i hope they move to grub 2, because right now they are difficult to dual boot,.still they seem to be offering a lot of nice features.
can't say i've had the crashes that you have experienced (yet)
grub 2 was suppose to be in this release... hmm i wonder why it didn't happen... although it aint too hard to manually configure it, I got a video explaining how to do it but yer... grub2 automates the process better
@mamado226 Just keep your existing grub2 if you like it. No need to replace the boot manger each time you install a distro. I prefer grub legacy myself for simplicity.
i,ve installed the last rc2 verson (kde). in my latop and looks promising, however ,manual partioning was very tricky, grub version was unable to detect my ubuntu partition and named every windows partitioon windows1,windows 2.i ,ve to restore grub2 to be able to see all my installed operating systems, there seems to be no repos for 12.1 yet (although it is almost 9 mobths old,cf ubuntu).tons of error messages from zypper and yast even in plain update.adding the weather widget crashed the system
btrfs filesystem will become default on all the top distros eventually... i'de say within 2 years ;) Then snapshot/rollbacks will be a thing of the Norm on Linux ;)
Hey man, nice review. However, I had no trouble installing openSUSE 12.1 on my laptop, it recognised the partitions properly, and I was able to assign my previously made partitions to their respective mountpoints without any problem whatsoever. So I guess it's a YMMV here. They'll probably fix it if it's an issue in the installer.
Also, YAST rocks ever since 11.3 was out. And openSUSE still remains my favourite out-of-the-box distro ;)
ah, but do you have 2 hard drives and try to auto partition? That is my problem... it somehow tries to overwrite a partition on the wrong drive... annoying. You probably used the built in feature that copies old partitions... never tried that... I just either want auto partition to do it's job properly on 1 drive and not touch the 2nd drive or friggin let me manually partition it myself. lol.
Yeah Yast has improved gradualy since 11.0 + and disabling refresh improves the speed
Still seems like OpenSUSE is trying to keep up with Kubuntu. I do like the look and feel of it though, it's nice and smooth. The GTK 3 theme doesn't fit to well with the kde theme overall.

Your reviews are, as always, full of useful information and great tips. I'm enjoying myself because I've not used SUSE since I bought the boxed 8.1 version (things have changed a bit since than! With SUSE 8.1 I did get all the codecs. That was before the lawyers were let lose :)

mousegeek 2 months ago
@mousegeek I remember that time :) I had bought the boxed version 6.0 of SUSE. There was a so called Professional version (server edition), which was expensive in it's boxed edition. But during that time it wasn't an easy thing to download it through a 56k or an ISDN, and that was only via FTP I guess, if it was available. A distribution that was considered user friendly over that era, was the Mandrake, which had been pushed by the french, and distributed through computer magazines :)

Otherwise it provides everything you need in the gui.... i'de recommend you read the zypper tutorial included in the description... that's about all you need to know to run Suse ;) I don't have suse installed anymore atm.

Linux4UnMe 3 months ago
Not a bad review, but you shouldn't review a distro that hasn't been released yet. In general, Linux versions stabilize throughout their lifetime. So they only get better. But reviewing them before their release, equals reviewing a buggy version.
mdutours 3 months ago
@mdutours
Linux4UnMe 3 months ago
@Linux4UnMe
If you are using it for the last few days before your review, that's 2 weeks before release.
mdutours 3 months ago
@Linux4UnMe

/root, /swap? why would you want to have 'root' on a separate partition? and.. i imagine you already know this, but you can't refer to the swap partition as '/swap'..
well, i've tried the opensuse rc, and the installer is buggy as hell, but you could just easily un-plug your main hd and let it do whatever it wants to the second one..
bamdadkhan 3 months ago
@bamdadkhan
Various reasons... security, easier to install distros without reformatting /home are 2. I know *buntu distros don't do this by default.
On the Suse installer, it doesn't let you proceed without / before "swap"
Yeah.. I "could" unplug a hard drive... but I sure as hell can't be bothered. lol :)

Thanks for that, good review as always.

lacks packages? well.. i would agree with 12.1 but suse usually has everything you can find with community repos + build service from my experience. Will take 12.1 a while to catch up.... because if you install nvidia outside the package manager and get an Xorg update.... Xorg will update but not the nvidia driver because it didn't come from the repo.... so you will often get conflicts and bork your system

But whatever man, enjoy Mint!
ryan4888 3 months ago
@ryan4888 according to the figures on distrowatch mint is the most popular Linux distribution
BelaFleckFan 3 months ago
@BelaFleckFan As Distrowatch & forums mention, popularity there is trashy, meaningless. Look at the options there: week, month, 6 mths, yr, etc. It has nothing to do with user base, nor users. Only those crazzies who look at Distrowatch - like myself!.
grey0powerlessnesss 5 days ago
@grey0powerlessnesss without sales receipts distrowatch is the only way to accurately judge a distro's popularity.
BelaFleckFan 4 days ago
@BelaFleckFan Just discovered:
alternativeto net
Distrowatch seems ignorant to this site. On the topic: MINT - is different to LMDE. Pinguy is better IMO than Mint-Ubuntu. More respositories, better integration of rare but valuable software.
One of my multi-boot (8) distros was upgrade from Pinguy 11.04 to 11.10 - ruined it. But my other Pinguy 11.04 was unaffected, as were the other 6 distros.
grey0powerlessnesss 4 days ago
@grey0powerlessnesss Distrowatch is a site dedicated to Linux Distributions, alternativeto net is just a site about software, to compare the two is pretty ignorant.
To say "MINT - is different to LMDE" when Mint is LMDE is also odd.
As far as Pinguy goes thats just another ubuntu/mint respin.

I hate that blue glow around the windows. They need to get a designer that isn't colour blind.
SeltsamerAttraktor 3 months ago
@SeltsamerAttraktor That can be very easily disabled in KDE
lindsaymobil22 3 months ago
@lindsaymobil22 I knew that somebody would say that.
SeltsamerAttraktor 3 months ago
@SeltsamerAttraktor Well if KDE isn't to your taste, as you so put it "Thrown together", you could always go with the other interfaces OpenSUSE uses...
lindsaymobil22 3 months ago
@lindsaymobil22 I _am_ a KDE user. I criticize openSuSE for its lack of polish here, not KDE. And that won't get better if I change from the distro's default desktop environment to something different.
Why are so many Linux users so oblivious to the many shortcomings and rough edges of the major Linux distros?
"You can change that" is not an argument, but rather the doom of the Linux desktop.
SeltsamerAttraktor 3 months ago
@SeltsamerAttraktor Look I didn't want to start a debate here! This is one of Linux's shortfalls straight away, users can never agree with each other! Anyway just because OpenSUSE give you an almost "barebones" KDE desktop in terms of styling, doesn't mean its a bad distro! Linux isn't all about the desktop, what makes a good distro is also how it works underneath all the polish of a desktop environment. Also, as I say, if you don't like the way its styled, the System Settings are there...

rayyanputra 3 months ago
@rayyanputra
Linux4UnMe 3 months ago
@Linux4UnMe is it true that Suse owned by Microsoft?
rayyanputra 3 months ago
@Linux4UnMe Sure friend to add to you Ubuntu is like apple in computer industry having led by Mark Shuttleworth and had distributed cd's freely through mail for years. Fedora is testing version of Redhat and Redhat is something you have to pay. Opensuse have agreements with microsoft and as I heard opensuse has paid royality for microsoft sake of sharing technology. I feel fishy about opensuse at all time. The most solid and true linux experience is in Slackware Linux. But it's too much techy!
TheLolipro 3 months ago
@TheLolipro I prefer debian or ubuntu based distros. Mint is good choice if you are new to linux :-) Have to say I'm not expert but humble user so feel free to comment on my comment.
TheLolipro 3 months ago
Respond to this video... As you said at end I hate opensuse for that political stuff. I feel fishy about them.
TheLolipro 3 months ago
@rayyanputra The purpose of a distribution is to do just that: distribute (free) software in the form of a coherent, usable operating system. So they all offer basically the same software stack. Some might have small in house developed goodies, like Unity,Yast, the Mint Menu etc. But the main differences lie in the:
1. philosophy (un-/stable, stance on non free software, etc)
2. release cycle
3. target audience
4. package manager and the repos
5. purpose (general Linux OS or something specialised)

the strangest thing is that it seems to me kubuntu uses a more updated version of kde 4.7 than opensuse and is more stable and snappier, despite the fact that opensuse developers have plenty of time more than kubuntu, also adding any weather widget and many others crashed the system invariably.i hope they move to grub 2, because right now they are difficult to dual boot,.still they seem to be offering a lot of nice features.
mamado226 3 months ago

Linux4UnMe 3 months ago
@Linux4UnMe just try adding a weather widget to the desktop. and tel me how it goes
mamado226 3 months ago

Linux4UnMe 3 months ago
Hey man, nice review. However, I had no trouble installing openSUSE 12.1 on my laptop, it recognised the partitions properly, and I was able to assign my previously made partitions to their respective mountpoints without any problem whatsoever. So I guess it's a YMMV here. They'll probably fix it if it's an issue in the installer.
Also, YAST rocks ever since 11.3 was out. And openSUSE still remains my favourite out-of-the-box distro ;)
Wintershade3001 3 months ago
@Wintershade3001
ah, but do you have 2 hard drives and try to auto partition? That is my problem... it somehow tries to overwrite a partition on the wrong drive... annoying. You probably used the built in feature that copies old partitions... never tried that... I just either want auto partition to do it's job properly on 1 drive and not touch the 2nd drive or friggin let me manually partition it myself. lol.
Yeah Yast has improved gradualy since 11.0 + and disabling refresh improves the speed
Linux4UnMe 3 months ago
@Linux4UnMe I NEVER auto-partition. That is my problem :D
I didn't copy any partitions, my /home partition was some 1/3 full, swap was untouched, I just reformatted the /
Not only did YAST improve, but also zypper... damn I remember when that thing was slower than Portage :-/
Wintershade3001 3 months ago
Still seems like OpenSUSE is trying to keep up with Kubuntu. I do like the look and feel of it though, it's nice and smooth. The GTK 3 theme doesn't fit to well with the kde theme overall.
