I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 64 bit, and using a dx level of 60 I can get counter strike source to run with roughly 200 fps. I have an nVidia 8800 GT.

Some games just won't run properly. Just create a fresh windows XP installation without all crap you daily use for gaming, and use your Linux to do everything else :D

However.. Some games (such as Warcraft III with opengl) run BETTER on Linux with Wine than on Windows. I got about 30fps on linux (I know, my gpu is too slow), which is about 25 on Windows.

Well.. on my old Duron 1800 + radeon9600 i had on linux 80 to 100 fps in cs 1.6.. no problem

The problem is that for playing a simple game like cs 1.6, you need on linux twice the game config for windows....

i have 3 gigs dual channel Kingstone CL5 Geforce7900GS and Pentium DualCore 3 ghz and ubuntu + wine + STEAM - CS 1.6 pretty low fps..that's why I still use Windows

Go to the restricted drivers manager in ubuntu and it should install drivers

Don't know personally, but ATI makes shitty drivers/or don't make any linux drivers at all

I know this post is a month old but ATI recently released drivers for Linux that are FASTER than Windows they claim. Visit their drivers page.

Yes, It is possible. I used windowed mode to show CS over GNU/Linux desktop, but you can have fullscreen mode.
