Originally released (in the U.S.) in May 1966. "Paperback Writer" was enough of an influence for Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart to compose an "inverted" variation as The Monkees' first hit, "Last Train To Clarksville", that September.
Kickass bass, both tunes. Am reading the autobiography of The Boys' recording engineer (Geoff Emerick) for Revolver and the later albums. Mr. Emerick somehow made a microphone out of a loudspeaker and used it mic Paul's bass amp.
The bass was never prominent in the earlier albums, but from Revolver on...I submit as Exhibit A the kickass bass lick in I Want You/She's So Heavy, from Abbey Road.
The reason this mix wins, hands down, over the stereo release? Listen to the intro. The backing vocals are correctly mixed forward, whereas McCartney's vocal drowns out the others' in the stereo mix. And, yes, the driving lead guitar riff is also more prominent in this mix, although, as happens in mono mixes of the era, the punch of the Rickenbacker bass that Macca reportedly wanted to kick out of the vinyl record's groove, often gets lost. The echo sequences are mixed better as well.
In regard to the record's sleeve... the photos used were reversed showing John and George playing left-handed... photo editor/sleeve designer's idea...
For the Record: Paul plays and writes left-handed... Ringo plays his drums in the right handed style but writes left-handed
@MrBeatleskid I was 7 years old when I became a Beatles fan... Every cent I got, I spent on Beatles' records...sounds like you've been brought up right...Your record is worth every penny...hang onto it...
My favorite Beatles single, and the mono mix certainly sounds better than the stereo mix. The Beatles mono mixes generally sound better for the most part, although I am partial to the stereo version of the White Album.
@slowmonkey156 Listening to Help! in my vehicle yesterday. I like the Stereo version better than Mono. But for Revolver Rubber Soul and the ones prior to Help!. Mono is the Ultimate.
I know. If you notice John is wearing his "Spanish hat," as they were performing in Spain. (A small sombrero they call it there.) Dezo Hoffman had them turn their instruments around for just one song so he could get the photo. After the show Lennon smashed Dezo's bloody ribs for him: "It's not enough you fookers at Capitol fook up the records--you fook up the bloody sleeves as well."

soooooooooo why can they not just revert songs from stereo to mono?
sparkytrick 1 year ago
@sparkytrick Because the mix is not the same. Both mono and stereo mixes are made from the basic tape to a different master.

Man this song sounds F*ing amazing in mono. Are the mono versions of these songs included on the new Past Masters CD's?
PearlJammer07 2 years ago
Included on the "Mono Masters" CD in the Mono boxed set.

The mono version is the definitive one hands down. If you've been listening to the stereo version then the reverb on here will be something new.
