  • 0:18 you gotta love that forehand motion

  • to me personally the best roger was in 2005 to 2006 the difference nw is that he is not as fit as he was from 2004 to 2006

  • QQ~~~~

  • @TennisAnnalyst every shot he makes has so much pace and depth back then even the backhand slice looks faster than his topspin backhand nowadays. I wish he would find his ferociousness again and utterly destroy his opponents. He varies his strokes too much, what happened to the days where he would outhit anyone from the baseline?

  • @kaylun80 Roger's BH is better now than it was in '04. Even his FH is just as good in some circumstances (like on fast HCs). His serve is much better than it used to be too.

  • @kaylun80 Dude don't dis Rog. You do know that players are hitting with *way* more spin now than they used to right? If he tried to flatball it like he does here against Hewitt, he would hit alot of shots out, and nothing would ever go out of anyone's strike zone. The fact of the matter is that Roger has evolved as a player, and as a result, so too has the rest of the field. And the fact that ONE player can make two generations of evolution, that is a fucking miracle.

  • Double Bagel

  • I remember this match. At the end, at the net, Hewitt said to Federer: "You're too good mate". I couldn't have said it better myself.

  • nver, you have it right on the money in both your backhand and forehand exhibition videos. US open 2004's fh + Master's Cup 2006 bh = God

  • I felt bad for Hewitt. I mean, the guy got two 0-6's handed to him, in the final of a Grand Slam.

  • jeeee

two bagels in three sets to a guy as solid as hewitt...

    out of this world.

  • this is one of those Federer-fan videos that are actually right on the ball in terms of summarizing the game -- not just highlight reels of Fed. thanks for the upload *nver*

  • From the footwork to the hands: PERFECT! Federer in those 2004-2006 years is unmatchable!

  • There was the "Munch" against Safin, 109 I think, AO

  • lol..

    poor Hewitt..

  • Hewitt: "Excuse me sir, I didn't order this bagel sandwitch"

  • Federer: "Sorry for the inconvenience, But it's all I serve here."

  • just fantastic. Federer in his prime.

  • He doesn't need so much power cos trying to compete with other young guys like Del Portro, Djokovic and Nadal, who use western forehand, in shot's power'll be stupid. Fed's strong point is ball placement and spin, not power

  • Wanna laugh? Del Potro hits like a young girl compared to Federer at his prime.

Seriously, Federer is known for having both heavy spinning and powerful strokes. I've seen a couple the 100-103mph on hard courts this year and when he played Djocovic, just before the final, he was blasting those balls kind of harder than against Del Potro.

And with western forehands, you get spin, not power because it suits a WW better while Roger's unique shot is more linear.

  • No Doubt. I've seen 105 mph and 110 mph off that side.

  • This year?

  • No. The 110 mph was many years ago in one of the spring hardcourt tournaments(I think it was IW sometime between 04-06) and the other I just remember the number being flashed up: 105 mph, but I can't remember where.

The 110 mph forehand was off a sitter that just cleared the net; Fed ran up skipped into it and just smashed it as hard as possible. No spin, just a all-out flat smash.

This year they did measure a 97 mph forehand from Fed on the dead run , against Murray in the AO final. first set.

  • Anyway, he's not going to win often if he keeps trying to nail each ball comin'. And it would be quite insulting to compare any present players' forehand to Federer's. His stroke is probably the best in tennis history - they'll have to win a couple more titles before we even think they have an effective shot.

He's getting older, but next time you see him, watch how his opponent keep avoiding his forehand, even when the logical play is to hit there.

  • your retarded, del potro uses eastern, and though it looks like nadal uses western cause he uses so much spin, but nadal actually does use a semi-western grip, and as for djokovic...i don't know

  • ok. After see this video tell me how this shot can't be the best forehand in tennis history.

  • Wow I when I watched this match in 2004 I was amazed by Roger's forehand but when I watched this highlight It was overwhelming!!

Yeah 2008 us open Roger whacked the balls murray threw at him but compared to his younger days his power decreased.... maybe he made adjustments for his body(his back in particular) coz back then he also has this strong backhand but now it's not so strong anymore but still great^^

  • Well he changed his backhand over the years because it wasn't getting the job done on clay especially at Roland Garros where his opponents would take advantage of his flat backhand. It was a solid shot of hardcourts/grass but on clay it was a liability. Then in 2005/2006 he added a big loop to his backhand which inevitably did lose power but his net clearance and consistency did go up.

Forehand strength, I think he realized he could get the job done using accuracy more than power.

  • federer still has the power of his forehand..he's just using ball placement to outmaneuver his opponents, but if he chooses to use his forehand, its just unbelievable..

  • If you watch his match vs Murray in the US Open, he still does possess immense power when he chooses to use it

  • I have never seen this before. So much power - shot by shot! Best shot in tennis history.

  • that's sake

  • he doesn't have that power anymore but, spin and placement are still there coz he plays too damn smart^^

  • federer killed hewitt in the first set, then he got a little off, then went right back on track to destroy hewitt again in the third set. it was smexy.

  • Don't ya miss watching Federer's old "Fun House Forehand"?

  • He mixes more his game now; but he still can show some brilliance. When he plays well far against baseline hitters, he tests his game level and sometimes he gets lazy and stick with it. It costs him point when his opponent can take advantage of it.

He no longer shots as hard, but he surely is accurate. If he doesn't get too lazy he can rebuild partially his monster identity and frighten again his opponent. Not with baselien play, but with the awsome aresenal he now posses.

  • you know about the power thing I think thats why recently his tension is around the high to mid 40's because he wants more power and possibly more control with the deep ball pocketing

  • wow. i remember federer ran hewitt ragged thru out this whole match. the guys legs musta been dead. federer was on fire and he was just floating around the court to hit winners. amazing...

  • He plays tennis like a badminton player; he is a rare one to lightly land and jump on the court to take lesser steps.

And then I am thinking about how does people can come to advise smaller steps... Federer has showed his method to be quite efficient and he is so graceful. This fluidity keeps injurry far. Heard this one, Nadal?

  • the federer would destroy nadal and co

he found it briefly at the US last year and i still believe he will find it this year when it counts

  • how come i didn't see this on your page earlier today?

  • sigh. gone r the days

  • that return at 0:47 is just crazy, just the speed at which he got there and then to hit a return that hard is amazing

  • 6:0/7:6/6:0 what can i say....?
