  • I honestly love the part where he says "Children are strong. They are resistant, they are designed to survive. When you drop them, they tend to bounce."

  • Why is it that a majority of the people who like this movie have to be absolute snobs about it?

  • only americans are so ignorant and braindead that they have to have the director explain the whole movie to them before it starts.

  • @dickhalloran Funny you should say that, seeing as how Terry Gilliam is a British citizen.

  • yeah whatever you can do whatever you want. but making a little girl kiss a grown man. thats fucked up. others can get in serious trouble with the law fo doing that shit.

  • @94xxxBehemothxxx94 I reckon you mean making an actress kiss an actor is fucked up? Regardless of that being their job? Or are you alluding to the act itself as portrayed in the film?

  • This is a truly GREAT film in every way.

I actually feel sorry for people who can't appreciate it.

They are really missing something here.

  • I'm from the group that love the film. Amazing, Terry Gilliam, this is probably one of your best works. Brilliant

  • Big Douche

  • He sounds pissed.

  • I love this movie. I think the little girls imagination saved her from severe depression and post traumatic shock but sunk her into a fantasy land that will be brutal to come out of. Awesome movie!

  • I love Terry Gilliam! And I love Tideland *-*

  • I agree with him. Tideland shows how open a child is. They accept that this is life, this is reality, just as it comes. They know no different.

Acceptance of reality is a good lesson for adults.

  • A truly amazing movie, though sadly, most of today's society just can't see that through all of the "controversial" and "provocative" issues it covers.

    TIDELAND isn't pedophelia

    TIDELAND isn't necrophelia/necromancy

    TIDELAND isn't mentally challenged molestation

    TIDELAND is real

The real thoughts and wonders hidden inside a little girl's mind

And hey, through thick and thin, she always wore a smile

Forever the best movie and puzzle to solve,

    Tideland~

  • He looks like Frankenstein

  • Beautiful intentions and a wonderful message indeed. If only, if only the movie had shined as bright as the mind of Mr.Gilliam himself. Wonderful director, most of his films are simply brilliant. Tideland just goes to show you cant win them all.

  • LOL a little girl i cant wait to see this

  • It turned out to be a little girl. Ha, that has it's connotations.

  • I was correct with his intentions. He doesn't care if Tideland is terrible critically or financially. All he cares is that he wanted to make this because he wanted to share his imagination. Wonderful director!

  • Nice intention mr. Gilliam, really. but theres a big difference between imagination and disorganised thought.

  • fuck hollywood ,, VIVA GILLIAM !!!

  • That was amazing.

I am feeling a little teary-eyed for what he said; it was strong and honest. thank you, Gilliam! =D

  • One of the bravest films ever made. You think you can handle it?Strap yourself in,bring your imagination, heart&soul (and open your mind!).Should have won several Oscars but.......f@#* Hollywood!

  • thank´s to you Mr gilliam

  • Man this intro is as disturbing as the film itself! I didn't know Terry Gilliam could be like this as a person! He seems so merry usually. I'm becoming more and more convinced that he is a true genius.

  • Love him...

  • i loved the movie - it was brilliant and surreal. terry gilliam IS indeed a great director.

  • "It turned out to be a little girl"^^

I guess I'll watch the movie

  • tideland is absolutely brilliant

  • I'm not surprised that most people didn't like this movie. But for some reason, I thought it was awesome.

  • I haven't watched this film yet, but I've read the book and loved it, I love Terry Gilliam's style and creativity in his films and will eventually watch this film. :)

Also, I love how in this introduction he literally told everyone he was actually a little girl inside ;D lmfao. good man ;)

  • this movie is amazing. loved it!

  • This is one of my favorite movies I love it sooo much and I think that this little speech before had is just wonderful, it is the truth about the movie I have watched it with a bunch of people that I know and I am one that loves it and everyone else does not know what to think. Everyone should have a little Jeliza-Rose in them, as their inner child.

  • Creepy... but still cool.

  • If a director puts all his imagination and heart into a film and his imagination happens to come up with stuff that is experienced by the general public as indecent, vulgar or otherwise despicable, he obviously can't do it and still make it accessible for all kinds of people. Therefore a director must either limit his imagination or his demographic. It could be generalized that artistically the former choice is clear, while economically the latter takes the cake.

  • Thank YOU man

    Thank YOU.

  • What is with the ending - "Thank you thank you thank you", what is he thanking us for . . . ?

Terry Gilliam is a little girl inside his mind lol

  • I think that Gilliam have had to justify himself a lot when the movie was released, this makes things a little clearer... or not xD.

  • I get the general message of the video, he has to explain the movie to people who didn't get it or something.

But the thank you's at the end were a little weird. And come on, admitting that deep down he's just a little girl?! That's soo funny!!!

  • well, Monty Python one day...

  • Yeah he was in Monty Python but I believe the humour of this video is entirely unintentional lol

  • I think it's intentional, just dry humor.

  • Hmm, maybe. It works against him though, I think. Just my humble op.

  • We need more minds like this. More daring people willing to push the creative boundaries. Cutesy inside the lines Hollywood is tiresome, boring, and repetitive. Barring many exceptions, obviously.

  • wow... i crying with this film... is my very very faborite film... is awesome.... you... film to eyes of a little girl is ....don't have words...for describe your film... i'm shock... wow...

  • You tell 'em, Terry. Tideland (book and film) are fantastic.

  • Sadly very few people who saw this intro actually listened to his plea to let go of their capacity for logic and reasoning. If they had, more people would've seen Tideland for the extraordinary work of art that it is.

  • best directors (not of all time but somewhat recent and in my opinion)

David Lynch, Werner Herzog, Chris Nolan, Terry Gilliam, and Jorodowski.

  • You have taste, lol.

Check out Shinya Tsukamoto and Verhoeven's Dutch films, Jim Jarmusch, and Cronenberg. You may have seen some of his work, but Miike has some brilliant films in his body of work also, like 'Gozu' and 'Visitor Q', 'The Happiness of the Katakuris', and 'Graveyard of Honor'. At least, start there.

  • KevsHardLemonade: Er, no, not David Lynch. He made Dune. Which is unforgivable.

  • The three "Thank you" 's at the end are a little creepy. And... I heard a fourth one in my head.

  • lol I heard about five, repeating into infinity . . . this video is weeeiirrd . . .

  • @Exterfirc : perhaps three"than you" are for three groups of people he mentions. People who hate the movie, people who love the movie, and people who will (hopefully) thinking about it.

  • You sound like a complete ignorant.

Im not gonna bet you are, but you do sound like one. I saw it without intro or any review. Liked it.

Saw it again, loved it. And now that I see what was the purpose of the movie, I can say now I fully understand the concept of it. Your words are too fast and too visceral, but thats just my opinion.

  • Loved the movie, made me laugh, made me sick, but most of all made me think...

  • o love this flim!!

    i love the story

    i lov ethe girl!!

    is awesome!!

    simply my favorite movie!!

  • The two ppl who commented before me didn't understand the movie, I pity them.

  • As I'm sure they pity you. I actually tried to watch this again, thinking that maybe I was too hard on it before.

Again nothing. A cast of revolting weirdos, a hasty copout ending, and a couple of random shock value scenes with no bearing on the meandering, vague plot. It made me want to look away from the screen and go vomit.

    Not my cup of tea.

  • They...bounce?

  • I think the movie that best made this point was, "Immortal Beloved". Despite being abused, Beethoven could still see the world, all the things that weren't ugly - hence the scene floating in the water at night watching the stars while Ode To Joy plays after having run from getting beaten. That was my own experience as a child who was kicked and dropped, etc. and who went for walks in the woods and wondered what would happen if you kept cutting a leaf until you got to the smallest part...

  • Thank You!

for me - this is the best movie. there are no alternatives.

    thankyou. thankyou.

  • Terry Gilliam, thank you for this film.

it is one of the best thing of my life that i ever seen.

when people are interested in me i always tell them if you want to understand me watch Tideland it is a movie about me.

When i first saw it i was so shocked becuse i see this world from her eyes. And it is awful becuse she is a child and i am already a young woman.

But in any way thank for this innocence and confessions that you share with us by this great movie!!!

  • best movie ever i luv it luv it luv .. I lost the times that i've already saw it !

  • Its not that the movie is offensive its that the scenes of fantasy are surprisingly banal.

  • I think he is right in what his saying, but wrong for saying it. He should not try to explain anything to anyone, for those who can, will understand anyway. Those who can't, or won't, will only use explanation to round their collection of misunderstandings.

  • I love how everyone magically has balls on the internet.

people getting up in arms about movie opinions just makes me lololol..

  • GOOD MOVIE!!!!!

  • Love ya Terry, but the movie should SHOW us how to view the events through the eyes of a child instead of you TELLing us. If you ask me it failed in that respect (although it was disturbing and interesting) because it was too hard to identify with her. A plotless film CAN be fascinating - but this one just dragged.

  • Love love love Tideland and Gilliam!

  • My reaction was immediate. I loved the film from beginning to end. His brilliant style, creativity and maverick out of the box imagination has always appealed to me. And TIDELAND is no exception. In fact this is probably his most boldest film move since Brazil (Brazil being the first of it's kind hold a very special place in my heart). Films that are so human, unpredictable and yet so emotional and transcending during the viewing experience are the best. Terry's the man!

  • what imagination? wasnt it based on a book someone else wrote?

  • The truth hurts them bustbool.

  • It's a good point. I've seen Tideland once and my initial reaction is 'What? How very strange'. Like all Gilliam films you need to watch them more than once before deciding whether they're masterpieces or donkeys. And even then donkeys can suprise you (don't try milking one).

  • Great film.

  • I think this movie is a work of creative art. jodelle ferland is a great actress. I look up to her as a fellow actress myself.

  • UR MOVIE TIZ BALLZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Love is movies, mas this video is just pointless. It's Gilliam full of himself.

  • Cool. Speaks to me! :D Haven't seen it but I'm confident....

  • best filmmaker alive. thank you Terry for your great movies, but you didnt have to film yourself saying that, if some the audience dont get it, fuck'em. you're a genious!

  • True that. :)

  • @thegranny2006 A genius indeed.

  • sounds like a bit of a nonse n i watch the 1st 50 mins of this film n i was like what..the...fuck...is....goin...on!!?

  • Some of these comments are dispeakable. Terry is a giant brain, its very normal for majority of Tideland's audiance will not understand the movie.

    *SPOILERS*

The 'kissing' scene, is nothing more then a childlike play. Bear in mind that the man Jodelle kisses has the brain of a child [the role]

So, NO it os not pedophilie, it is NOT gross. Its creative, its lovely, and a very good chance to see one of the best younger stars acting.

  • despicable, yeah. Not the perfect english speaker.

I beleive the movie is not just a childs vision of life, but a childs vision of life even though her traumas. She has the worst parents, people around her are just rotten. But still, she has a lively mind of an innocent child. I think that is what makes this movie 'lovely'.

  • um she was trying to seduce a mentally ill guy and shes 8 or something

  • i dont see lovely there

  • It was purely innocent! She thought she was pregnant when he kissed her for gods sake!

And Dickens Isnt Mentally ill he has epilepsy and sadly was subject to a labotomy.

  • A lot of people claim this girl's imagination is what protected her and made her "bounceable". I would really like to know how. Her fucked up imaginings were even creepier than what was really going on.

If she had followed in the footsteps of her insane perverted bitchy neighbor and started having sex with her father's corpse could that be seen as acceptable and "innocence conquering all"?

  • And Dickens isn't mentally ill? Oh so then there's no excuse for him making out with a little girl and going so far as to get in the missionary position with her.

So when did her innocence shield her from harsh reality? When she was discussing Dickens' penis with a squirrel? When she put a blond wig and whorish lipstick on the corpse of her father and told him that he wasn't going to blame his post mortem gases on her this time?

  • Or when crazy glass eyed pervert bitch taxidermist pickled her father and tanned his hide and propped him up next to the mummified corpse of her mother?

Right, they all live happily ever after in her father's ribcage where severed doll heads flutter around like doves, and grandma mystique of the shrunken head and rocking chair passes on nonsensical wisdom?

I still stand by the fact that this movie is both disgusting and pointless.

  • The typical adult who doesn't remember childhood thinks that about kids. I never thought a kiss made you pregnant. No kid I knew thought that. What kid thinks that, really? Here's a song I heard on the playground in 4th grade: My name is Poncho - I live on a Rancho - I make 5 pesos a day - I go home to Lucy - Who give me some poosay - and take my 5 pesos away!

Kids are resilient? What's clever about that? How about, kids are more worldly than we adults like to think; or that they'll tell us.

  • If you're looking for a 'decent person' in each film you're really going about cinema the wrong way. If every film had a 'decent person' life would be boring.

  • Well, I myself wasn't looking for a human being, just someone who wouldn't make me gag. By the end of the movie, I just wanted someone worse to come along and massacre all three of these disgusting shells of human beings.

  • Tideland was both good and bad at the same time. id watch it again though.

the intro was...idk kind of needed i guess.

  • Ha!Haze I can't help who logs in around the same time I do. You just logged in as well derrherrrherrrrr! What's this about you bringing up masturbation?! Now it all makes perfect sense! You secretly fantasize and masturbate 2 this movie that is why you openly claim 2 hate it so much, yet you keep dwelling on it on Youtube! You obviously LOVE 2 hate it! You are one really sick perverted freak. Just stop breathing already!

  • u again? shut up cuntface ur as delusional as that little girl

  • can anyone upload the move?

  • I thought Tideland was an interesting movie, not high up on my favorites list, but I was entertained enough throughout the movie.

Like Terry Gilliam said: Many of you are going to love it, and many of you won't know what to think (or dislike it).

Too bad for those who did not enjoy it, and for those who did enjoy it, I'm glad there is some people out there who apprieciate this movie.

  • Well, your attempt to make fun of him proves that your jokes are lame. Just like your collection of Judge Judy clips. No it's not weird that he claims to see the world through the eyes of a little girl. I mean after all, you still watch care bears lol. Isn't that a little weird then? Wow. So you find necrophilia, heroin overdoses and implied pedophilia exciting? What kind of weirdo are you? It's more like sad and pathetic.

  • U just stated those things are exciting,U R weird and creepy. Being interested in what people (watch on their youtube) that didn't enjoy this movie orfind it interesting is just out of curiousity being that I'm a psych minor.U seem to have alot to say probably because you have alot of unresolved issues with yourself.

  • We both know that's definately not going to happen. It's you being ridiculous and emotional again. About a movie to say the least! Wow, what a weirdo.

  • OK I still watch carebears. See my point has proved. You Contradict yourself time and time again yet you are too retarded to see it.

  • It's online, not a my future job, geez guy. !Hahaha!

  • I didn't say I was a psych major, learn to read, I said minor. You stated that ,"Then somehow, despite the necrophilia, heroin overdoses and implied pedophilia, this movie managed to be really boring." That means you find those things exciting. What are the opposite meanings of boring? Thank you. lol.

  • Lol, I never said I was going to be a psychiatrist. Crazy man. I can't help that I find erroneous and oxymoronic in all of your foolish talk. You make absolutely no sense what so ever. I'm glad too you are only online being a bafoon. I feel sorry for those that have to encounter you on a daily basis, or ever for that matter.

  • I never attacked you. I made a clear point that your statements were self-contradictary. If you felt that I was attacking you, must have some serious emotional issues, especially about a movie, you seem to hate with immense passion.

  • It was a quick scroll down of comments. I can not help that I read fast and think fast.

  • i can't believe i'm reading this. go get a new brain like mystique u stupid fucking cunt

  • HHaze, U should've stuck 2 watching your collection of boring JUDGE JUDY clips and your CAREBEAR clips lol. That is sad and pathetic. This is a HORROR film not a CAREBEARS film. Stick to your GENRES duh!

  • Right, I'm the airhead yet you watch carebears and decide to watch a horror movie and rate it. RETARD. How old are YOU BTW? OOPS wait, BTW means By The Way since you're apparently not used to online lingo. You must super OLD!

  • Whatever, we both know I am right. That is why you refused to answer any of my questions. Now let it go old lady or old man. I'm guessing your an old lady by the way you behave online.

  • Right. I'm to believe a creepy old lady like you that you are 26. Did you think I meant being old is an insult? You must be old.

  • You must believe you are the Youtube english moderator, right? GET A LIFE WEIRDO. Seriously. Get some mental help too.

  • I told you 2 let it go a loong time ago, loser. Get a life! ONLY IN YOUR SICK PERVERTED MIND would even dare to think about masturbation to such a movie! You're just telling on yourself about exposing yourself to children you sick freak! Go turn yourself in to the proper authorities! They'll kick your ass for me! hahahaha! LOSER.

  • ur the 1 that started it. the other lady said she didnt like the movie, not that she didnt like u. i cant take dumb art film knowitall bitches like u. and u r a pedo if u find anything lovely about a little makking out with a mentally ill crazy man sporting dinamite.

have fun takeing the virginity of sick people and talking to squirrels idiot. rot in hell u disgusting cunt

  • He is much more intense than usual in that intro, what a special film.

  • I love this movie...its pure brilliance!

  • people can be so lame they will neveer get it like a lonely little girl would really judge a handicappedd kid when she has no one else of course she knw her father was dead she just could not face the fact that he was gone duh its happened to other kids uhhh it was an amazing film eff that to anyone who talks shit seriously u just ddont understandd whether you do or not its your shit i love this movie

  • I tried very hard to take what the intro said to heart. Really, I did. But I couldn't bring myself to even finish "Tideland." I tried applying it to what I remember of being a child, and it just didn't work for me. I still would have recognized my father's dead body in a chair. I still would have realized there was something deeply wrong with the kid next door. I will usually try and stand by Gilliam's work, but not this one.

  • I'm going to use some of the things he said in this intro on anyone I know that's planning on seeing Tideland. "This film is seen through the eyes of a child. If it's shocking, it's because it's innocent." So true. I liked the movie a lot.

  • I think nobody will ever make movie that would be psycho enough so I would give it 100%, but this one is quite close. Unfortunatly some people will never understand that kind of movies, because it doesnt fit their scheme.

  • Boy, do you like to read into other people's statements.

I think Gilliam has been around long enough that he means what he says when he says it, and I think your view is what's "shit."

  • hehe... "they tend to bounce"...

  • You took the drop a child and they bounce way too literal. He means they are resiliant duh. Him finally finding his inner child @ 64means that at least he found it while some will never know their inner child sadly. Some never lost it. Seriously, are you retarded? I mean it's not that complicated what he's trying to convey.

  • You're the retardo if you don't see the insane amount of humor in his hilarious spiel! This is funny shit! Uh.. you mean he wasn't REALLY advocating dropping children?? I am SHOCKED! I thought he meant it literally! How silly of me. Let me know when you discover unintentional meanings are humorous.

    I AM XENU!!!!

  • Ok XENU warrior dipshit lol. How silly of you, if you weren't retarded, I'd probably wouldn't be as sympathetic towards your lameness.

  • You think I'm lame because I find something that's hilarious funny? How old are you. anyway? 12? And you obviously have no idea who Xenu is. I will blast you with BTs if you continue being obnoxious. And those are VERY expensive to get rid of.

  • Wow. My point has been proven. Thank you.
