When the ue wo muite arukou was released in America as an instrumental they decided to call it Sukiyaki because Americans would get confused by the Japanese title. It's a tad insulting tho as it refers to a Japanese meal. They could've at least gone with something nice like a flower or the japanese word for the moon or sommat. Anyways - thats where that odd Anglicised name for the song comes from. Beautiful tune. This isnt too bad but I dislike the 80's cover done by Taste of Honey. Just bland.

Tune is taken from Kyu Sakamoto's 1963 song which was also called "Sukiyaki". Both versions have their own pleasantries about them and 4 P.M. was classy enough to give credit to the original while at the same time making it their own. Good stuff!

@grothesk80 Sakamoto Kyu's song was NOT titled "Sukiyaki". It was titled "Ue o Muite Arukoo",which translates to "I Look Up When I Walk",a phrase that he says at the beginning of most verses. Most verses say something along the lines of "I look up when I walk,so my tears won't fall,remembering {insert season here} days that I spent with you. But,now you're gone,like you have been for so long.And,for tonight,I'm all alone.". It's really sad how the English singers always translate it incorrectly.

@KinomiyaMichiru Actually, tho it's true 'Ue wo Muite Arukou' is the correct title of the song, 'Sukiyaki' was an alternative title used in English speaking places due to the fact that it's much shorter, memorable and Japanese. It was also easier for ppl to pronounce back then. Stupid a reason as it was the fact of the matter is that it was used for the title of that song so you are incorrect. Also, none of the English versions ever claimed to be direct translations. They were cover versions.

@asianmusicfan001 Actually, it's called this because it was basically the only Japanese word that the English DJ that first spun the record in England could remember. I agree that it's an easier word for most fans to remember. Sadly, if I were a singer and someone covered my song in say Japanese, I'd want the lyrics to be pretty similair, of course, I realize some small things would get lost in translation.

It was even more sad that the alternative title chosen just had to be a food. Thank goodness though we are at an age where this doesn't happen like that anymore. As for the lyrics, what I meant was that all the English versions were never translated at all. They were all rewritten with the sad sentiment of the original and that was it. Even the Spanish cover

I knew that some versions, like the German ones, were completely different from the original. But, it is quite nice to have around all the different ones, so that people of different languages can enjoy the song.

@KinomiyaMichiru As for Hikki's version, it's probably because the English version is the most popular version remembered. (Even tho many of the English versions still vary a bit) I was disappointed in her too when she did the two versions of Hikari/Simple and Clean. She too seemed to fall into that thing of rewriting lyrics to suit English listeners. Hikari is so beautiful when translated and I don't think English speakers would've gotten confused if she'd sung a direct translation.

@KinomiyaMichiru that Selena did back in the 90's was never directly translated from the Japanese version which is really sad. Normally a song covered in another language is pretty much directly translated, which is why I hate when English singers cover foreign songs they never translate and only rewrite, but in the case of Selena she just rewrote the lyrics as well. I have heard there is one country-type song that came close but it's still no direct translation. How I'd love to see one tho.

@KinomiyaMichiru Yes, it's true. They never bothered to try and put out a translated version and instead just rewrote the words to suit themselves. I find it sad in the case of English covers cause often times the true meaning of a song gets lost when that's done. I know not all songs can be directly translated and sung but more often than not it's possible and they just don't. I think it was a country cover tho I'm not 100% on that. I remember reading about it somewhere long ago.
