These things are so butt-ugly, yet beautiful at the same time. I would be a proud owner of one of these whenever I become rich and shameless. These, and the Catalinas. Wonderful birds of play.
Firstly there is no way that you could call Bill Weist a rookie, the man can fly. This goose is decommissioned now due to the fact that it hit a truck crossing the road and nose dived into the runway, not to much you can do after that.

As far as I can remember, it was Bill Weist flying it when it wrecked in Driftwood Bay. And check your story, cause I don't know of anybody who'd call him a rookie. It'd be sweet to see your pics. When it all was happening, Magone said it was a pain in his ass, and he was ready for the job to be done.
Does anyone at all understand the concept of wind against a microphone? Don't have a foam cover? Use your finger over the access hole. Just at least think a little.
I used to work on 2 of them in that last hanger closest to the water. they flew to and from Akutan. that hanger had so many holes in the roof that when it rained we would wear rain coats inside while working on the goose.
Bob Reeve was the best bush pilot ever! Reevee Aluetian still flies out their, and their safety record is second to none! Alaska bushpilotes??? None even come close! Bob reeve pironered glacier landings, along with Don Sheldon!, and Jo Crossen! You down south are clueless!
Bob Reeve was a great pilot. Reeve Aleutian doesn't still fly down here. There safety was good given circumstances, but certainly not the best. And you are to critical of people.
You kinda sound like an old book junkie. Your facts are...true...but dated. Reeve Aleutian doesn't "Still fly" out there... Look it up. Dunno why you are such a hardass on people when even you aren't perfectly clear on things.
Was there summer of1970 working on a crab boat, quit that job and flew out on a Reeve Allition Airways goose. Could it be the same plane? The only trees on the island were in the Russian Orthidox Church garden and they were only four deet tall. Cool place Unalaska. Nice flashback, thanks.
Yes, it very well could be the same plane! There were several Grumman Goose planes flying in and out of dutch...as a previous commenter said, there was a crash and I believe one of the planes was taken out of commission. They're WWII vintage and finding parts is tough, so I'm not sure how much longer they will be around...but I love the Goose.
A company called 'Antilles Seaplanes' purchased the design, and is building the Goose again. It's called the G-21 Super Goose. So maybe you'll see more of them.
@Hillarious87 I was working for Magone's when it crashed. We went out and picked up the pieces and brought it back to dutch for PenAir. They said they were going to fix it and fly it again. The story was a rookie pilot ran off the edge of the runway and it flipped end over end one time landing upside down. Bent the props and tore off part of one wing. Other than that it wasnt tore up too bad. I have some AWESOME pics of the salvage effort.
I love to visit Dutch Harbor..when is a good time to visit? Looks to be absolutely beautiful.
There was a Japanese plane that made a forced landing(killing the pilot) and the US military found it and put it back together hence helped them find the Zero Fighter weakness. This was mid 1942. Not sure where is that plane is now. Smithonian?
Hey, he flew right through the stop sign
