I bought this on 7" vinyl at the time (circa November 1989) and remember thinking it was great at the time. The charts were full of remakes and remixes of older hits in the late 80's / turn of the 90's. Thanks for jogging some good memories - makes me want to dig out my vinyl copy now and play it! :)
hey shaks74, he's not destroying the perfection of the original... he's adding his own twist to it... the 1978 original was a bit "disco"ish... why not tech it out some? it's still one of the coolest stories ever told... i appreciate all artists who keep this tale alive... (except for stephen spielberg, who clearly raped it for cash)...
I remember getting this off the radio onto a tape and thinking it was the best thing since slided bread! It actually scared me!!And I'm not embarassed to say, I still think it's friggin' brilliant!
brilliant remix. I used to hear this at raves and it used to blow ugly little head right off. I love Richard Burton's voice, you only get a voice like that from years of drinking copious amounts of alcohol, smoking endless cirgarettes and endlessly banging a very young Elizabeth Taylor and growing up in Welsh valleys full of coal dust....
uh oh spot the deliberate mistake, they didn't use Richard Burton's voice on this, they have a soundalike. Probably couldn't afford to use the original copy, not surprising really as it would have cost them more that they would make on single. Still, no excuses I'm still a prick for not noticing.
95% of this video is taken from the promo video that was released in early 1978, before the Jeff Wayne album came out. As annimation goes, this was good - for 1978
"...Few men even considered the possibility of life on other planets. And yet, across the gulf of space, minds immeasurably superior to ours regarded this earth with envious eyes. And slowly, and surely, they drew their plans against us."
"Abruptly, the sound ceased. Suddenly the desolation, the solitude, became unbearable. While that voice sounded, London had still seemed alive. Now suddenly there was a change, the passing of something, and all that remained was this gaunt quiet..."
The full text of that wee snippet from the end. You can't argue with the tightness of Doreen Wayne's script; Jeff Wayne's score or the lyrics from Gary Osborne and Paul Vigrass :o)
This is still the best remix of Eve of the war (except the Hybrid mix).
I used to have this on cassette single!
I remember the B side was also something based on War of the Worlds, but ws an original track. Cant remember what it was called... I think it was called Man Fights Back.
It's called "sampling" - this kind of thing was very much in vogue in the late 80s - just 2 years earlier MARRS had a number 1 record "Pump up the Volume" which consisted of nothing more than cut ups of other records
This track is a remix of a track from Jeff Waynes' Musical Version of War of the Worlds. The original album is still on Sony's lists. The track here is a remix of the first track from the first disc, entitled "Eve of the War". This mix is by Ben Liebrand, and was released in the UK in 1989.
I got the CD single for free from a work colleague when I left a job about 4 years ago. He knew I was a fan, so ... :-) But, I was wondering, how much of this footage is taken from original promo stock from 1978? I know Wayne made a mini-movie (?) for the original album promotion, and I'm sure at least some of this vid (Carrie's photo floating about, etc) is from that.

Actually it is him just his voice is deepened in pitch
MFAtlas 2 years ago 3
The voice over IS Richard Burton, taken from the original audio recording. Its just been pitched down.

No one could have dreamed that we were being scrutinized as someone with a microscope studies creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water..."

Yey, I was nearly right. I thought it was 'Man Fights Back', but yeah, it was 'ManKIND'. That was a pretty good track in its own right.
