I'm so glad to FINALLY find a version I can feel good about my piano students listening to! My son is currently working on this piece and I'm very grateful for an example I feel good about him emulating.
wow....you are the first person i have heard that has played maple leaf at the right tempo....others try to play it too fast.....this is just perfect.......i can pick out the notes nicely......and you are not playing it rushed....great work!!! :)

Great job! I like this tempo, actually, because you can really "hear" and appreciate all the notes and the melody. I can't stand the ultra-fast versions.
Very enjoyable to listen to, although from personal preference i prefered played faster. This was perfect throughout, which i absolutely love. Well done and thank you.
Wonderful tempo! Bravo to any pianist who is sufficiently thoughtful to arrive at such a realization of the true personality of classic ragtime.---David Thomas Roberts
Thanks to all of you for taking the time to let me know you appreciate this. Since the response has been so favorable, I'm encouraged and will be recording some more Joplin very soon.
Yep. Nicest I've heard. Feels good. I'm trying to learn it on guitar, but there are so many variations and different keys on utube that I want to get to know it from an authentic piano version, although I could never play it this good. This shall be my standard. Thanks
now that's the way to do it! I've seen tons of maple leafs on YT, but none was so well played - most people are just showing off how fast they can play it, but in fact this tempo favours this piece the most.
I'm glad so many people appreciate hearing ragtime played in the more "traditional" way. Some might say "stodgy" or even "academic." Joplin was a teacher and a pretty conservative guy. Of course, we know that even in his own time, musicians were playing his music in ways of which he did not approve. I'm thinking of Jelly Roll Morton in particular. But then, what a wonderful new tradition came out of Morton's "jazzing up" of ragtime.
@GlennHardy You're right, I personally enjoy it both ways, but I have to say that you have done Joplin justice in interpreting it correctly, it sounds great - and as well as that, I can still hear parts where you play it just slightly differently that the sheet music, it's a nice touch to the song, because I can tell you're enjoying it :D
Takes me back to when I first started learning Piano, I was 5 or 6 and it was this easy learning ragtime piano book full of gems, a fair few pegs down in skill compared to what's required for pieces like this though.
Hi,.. id like to tear apart your performance in 3 mins of typing, even though it took you over 15 years of education to learn this piece,... but im not retarded like everyone else that WILL leave a post,..
When I first looked at this I thought "my God it's Glen Gould" The posture is somewhat similar.

Yea I agree the slower tempe really brings out the magic of this piece, but I will admit that it is tempting to really play fast.
