It's definitely a sad situation but poverty can be a choice. These commentators never mention the fact that many of these refugees left on their own free will. The Jews had been preparing for opposition since 1914. They were smart in that they taxed themselves, fortified their dwellings, and utilized any political resource available. What did the Palestinians do? They waited on the salvation of other Arab countries. That's why they are refugees now. They should learn from their mistakes.

Whereas the borderlines were not drawn under the Ottomans, the area of Palestine had its own inhabitants, who happened to have their own culture and identity, and they continued to live there under the British Mandate and eventually the Zionist occupation.

When the British colonized the area they recognized the Palestinian identity, and promised the Palestinians independence. But they didn't keep their promise. They decided to sell Palestine to the Jews because they were looking after their own interests and didn't give a damn about the Palestinians.

Palestinians wanted freedom from the Ottomans and desired their own nation just as the Jews. The British were trying to accommodate both not just a nation for the Jews. There was never a deal made because each time a deal was proposed to the Palestinians they declined it just like they do today. this also ignores the fact that all major players involved in the palestine/israel conflict have accepted a two state solution besides US/israel. hezbollah, iran's, hamas', official positions have long been to accept peace for a two-state solution based on israeli withdraw from illegally occupied territories.
