WOW, this is the first time I've seen this angle of that wreck. Just shows you just how fast the trucks are going because when he comes off the fence (almost stopped in mid-air) and then gets hit again it just launches his truck like a toy. Unbelievable, I watched the race live and thought for sure he was gone and the trucks would never race at Daytona again, thankfully he recovered and for the most part the trucks still put on the best show during speed weeks.
@TheEverlastingSM well not quite. The driver was actually in the hospital for a few months clinging to life followed by months of rehab as well as a few injuries to those in the stands. But yeah, that catch fence saved the series from pretty much getting shut down
I saw Geoff Bodine's truck today in a museum with other wrecked cars. Unbelievable. The cockpit was completely exposed. The roll bars were bent severely as well. Not only did they have the truck, but they had the motor sitting right next to it on the floor. Geoff is certainly a lucky man.
i'm quite amazed with this angle. i thought that the catch fence just shreded his truck. instead it just shreded his front and right side then he fliped. there was also a fire so it was still near fatal.
This was one of the scariest, most gut-wrenching moments I ever experienced watching NASCAR... but you know, Bodine was one of the guys responsible for making NASCAR safer than it was in the rough old days. It was good to see it pay off in a personal way for him, and is good to know that he's still got the fire inside.
Really excellent footage you got, there. Thank you very much for sharing it.
Incredible footage. You should work for one of the NASCAR networks. I've never seen an angle like this one before this video..it's crazy how the back end of the car whipped around after hitting the fence.
Amazing footage. It really shows how Bodine's truck got pushed into the catch fence and torn up like it was run across a cheese grater. Did NASCAR ever see this footage or did anybody ask for it, to use it in examining how the truck came apart and if anything could be learned for future safety?
Best shots ever seen of this wreck. It really actually shows you what happened to his truck, the TV doesn't show it almost freeze and then grab and rotate the truck... or how it slowed down dramatically before being hit by other trucks. Incredible. Thanks for posting this!
Damn. That is an astounding shot. None of us really got to see what happened to his truck until after he came out of the fireball. This type of shot really helps to understand the nature of the crash better, and it's excellent footage. I still can't believe that he survived, with relatively minor injuries too!
As you can see, his saving grace would seem to be that he never did suffer a sudden stop. That, and Lonnie Rush Jr. seemed to hit the undercarriage rather than the top of the cage.
No, he did not die, but was quite banged up. In fact, Geoff Bodine came back and raced on a very limited basis afterwards, and is now involved in a program where he helps develop the bobsled for the U.S. Olympic team.
Wow. To be fair the accident doesn't look as bad from this angle. If you look at the cockpit it doesn't seem to stop as badly as the tv angle. Still a hell of a crash though.
this shot really shows you what exactly happened in this wreck it was hard to tell from the tv shots....when you think about it now dennis setzers crash this year at talladega could have been just like this one but thankfully was not as bad
ive always wondered what happened because you cant see from the tv camera through all the flames. great capture and qaulity especially from a camera from 2000.
the crash looks alot different from this view. on the tv it looks like it just flew directly into the fence but this shows how it like crawled up the wall
Interesting. I did not know that Kurt drove the #99 in 2000. Also, this is some of the best footage I've seen of this accident. Keep up the good work.
If the 27 never hit him he would of landed on the wheels. Actually if the truck that got into bodine didn't spin up into bodine when he hit the fence, it would of been bad at all. You learn slot from this view.
The trucks today are no where near as exciting as they use to in these days. Full bore racing = awesome. But these trucks werent as safe as they are today. Take the tapered spacers off the trucks and you would see more exciting racing. Plus, the side windows arent really necessary.
wow, this whole time i thought his truck hit the wall and started barrel-rolling along the fence, leading to the fireball, but what actually happened was the front of the truck was just grated off by the fence posts. absolutely incredible
When I shot this, Bodine's truck came off the fence and was immediately punted by the #27 truck of Lonnie Rush Jr.; this sudden and additional upward burst of motion caused me to quickly "zoom out" to try and locate Bodine's truck again.
