  • These guys didn't have good songs like legendary power pop groups such as The Romantics, The Paul Collins Beat, Cheap Trick and The Knack. That first Paul Collins Beat LP and that first Romantics LP are solid albums of perfect power pop. Material Issue sounds like Christian rock or elevator music.

  • @hectorsalinasisback you are an idiot

  • I saw them rip the roof off The Patio in Indy when Freak City had just come out. What a show. What a band. What an album. RIP Jimmy

  • The first time I saw them was in '91. They played a free show at this amusement park in Ohio. After the show, I hung out with them and they bummed some smokes off me and signed a bunch of stuff. Really cool dudes. Man, that seems like forever ago and this certainly brings back memories. Thanks for posting this.

    Cheers.

  • My buddy and I got to meet them in Ames, IA briefly one night. We were huge fans. They were super cool, autograghed our CDs and I think they would even would have a beer with us if we would have asked. Great show. Glad we had the opportunity to see them in a small venue.

They were the soundtrack to my 20's. They're long gone now too.

  • The lead singer of The Tragically Hip, Gordon Downie, met Jim Ellison while on tour. They got a long really well, Gordon wrote the song "Escape Is At Hand For The Travellin' Man" in tribute of Jim Ellison after his apparent suicide. The lyrics of Escape Is At Hand For The Travellin' Man, is descriptive of Gordon's experience with Jim, it's a great song, one of my favorites from The Tragically Hip.

  • I had heard there was a suicide note, but the family has not relesed it. No real surprise. RIP Jim.

  • My band got to open for these guys in Denver in late'91? Then in Boulder about 6 months later. They were all really cool to us. Ted and Jim both hung out and had a few beers with us. This is one of the great unsung power pop bands of the last 20 years. RIP Jim

  • @HLFFL thanks for all your cool comments my friends... very nice. This is for all...

  • Why did Jim commit suicide? Does anybody really know. That was just a damn shame. They were a really great band. Saw them in 91 or 92.

  • He killed himself over Liz Phair. She would not leave her husband.

  • Sucks I never got to see them. South Florida sucks for shows

  • They were the best chicago band ever ,

    RIP JIM ELLISON

  • these guys were my friends even before they made a name for themsevles. just checking to see if anyone knows 16 tamborines now that was a great song.

  • Hi there. I was the drummer in MI before Mike. I played on 16 tamborines. Do I know you?

    Danny Thompson

  • no i dont know you but that song was the greatest. jim told me he hated that song and did not want to play it. mike stayed at my house in carbondale while ted and jim hooked up with the chicks. funniest thing mike left his pillow and i kept it for about 4yrs and forgot whose it was what a shame. lol. you wont not have a recording of that song. it is awesome would love to hear it again. let me know ok thanks for the response.

  • I have this band on this on my ipod. Pretty cool.

  • No BS, the drummer of the band is my cousin

  • Is MIke still playing with The Ladies And Gentlement in Chicago? I remember each album cover thanked some woman named ALexa or Alexis or something like that. What that Mike's girlfriend/wife at the time in the early 1990s?

  • Alexia. L&G are still playing.

  • awesomeband

  • i gotta be honest...i always thought that stereofuse wrote this song...as much as i think i know about music...i always find out how little i actually do know (humm did that make sense?)...LOVE this song and now i know the truth..thanks!!

  • I remember when SF remade this song a few years ago and looking at their site b/c I thought it was cool that they did a remake. But, except for one very small, obscure reference to MI, SF almost made it sound as if this was their own song. On their board fans were fawning over what a great song it was until I and some others posted that it was a remake. I thought that was quite tacky to try to obfuscate the fact that it was a remake from an obsure band.

  • yes i agree...like i said, I pride myself on knowing music and it floored me to find out SF did not write this song. It seems they almost wanted people to think they wrote it. Anyway...great lyrics and well written melody...peace

  • i was one of those people letting the SF idiots know that this masterpiece is Jim's work!

  • Shame for the Smashing Calabazas (smashing punpkins) they dont want to visit Latinoamerica u know below Mexico what happen with this guy Billy Corgan Is he GAY or what?

  • Good music from Chicago to the World yeah!

  • One of my favorite songs to play on guitar and one of the first I ever learned. Thanks for posting this video. As a huge fan of the band, I don't think I ever saw this video until now...thanks for posting!

  • Thanks! I'd never seen this video. I was lucky enough to see Material Issue perform an acousitc show in SLC in the late 80's or early 90's (I can't remember but it was at the time of their national release of International Pop Overthrow). Great group to see live. Jim will definitely be missed.

  • Sir, I really want to thank you for posting this. Really brings back memories. You know, I havent even found a CD of this in a while. Still have this album on tape.

  • Say Thanks to the Prince of Darkness 666 lol lol... Why you dont buy Greatest Hits Cd? posted in the beginning and end of this video.

  • Thanks for posting this video. I have not seen it since it first came out.
