I think the problem with this is not Rich Little's jokes, but that Rich is too smart for this group of fops. The Canadian deer-hunting joke wasn't a try at cheap laughs. The joke was intentionally bad on Rich's part, he's just toying with his audience. He knows he's one of the great classic comedians of the Golden Age of Hollywood, and he's using that entitlement to mess around with the self-deprecating style of bad gags. He's playing smart to a dumb crowd.
