There is something wrong in here. Starting from 16:55 the castle should be falling apart, but it remains complete. I remember playing this game and finishing it a lot and the castle actually getting destroyed :-/
@wormwood5073 I always took Ryu's non-responsive reactions to Foster's repeated claims that Smith was killed by someone else as an indication that he didn't believe him. When we learn at the end how involved Foster was, it makes sense that he would have arranged for Smith's death in order to force Ryu into fighting Jaquio and awakening the demon, proving Ryu was right not to trust him early on.
@acidglow they had a feature on the PV community theatre acting out cutscenes from games, and mentioned this one. and they had an annotation here so you could see the original cutscene.
@acidglow Not the creatures, but the music and the cutscenes. I was not even 10 when this came out, so maybe that makes sense? The cutscenes are just terrifying, even now to me.
This game put the NES console on the map. There was nothing like it at the time. I found it amazing seeing these "cinema displays" as a kid and they still look good to this day. This game can be completed rather quickly without much hassle. It just involves playing it repeatedly til you memorize where the enemies appear and adjust your gameplay accordingly.
iam a girl wo love games when i was litte i was afraid for the cutscene from this game i dont know why i wash scared tho dead for Jaquio my brother always maked me scared for Jaquio
This was awesome. I remember the first time I beat this game. I must've screamed to the top of my lungs. It took me forever to beat it and I think I got lucky.
So true. Even though not as epic back in the day as the Famicom Fire Emblem games, it was CERTAINLY up there as one of the five best. But then again, maybe Fire Emblem shouldn't be counted as it was only released on the Famicom, the Japanese NES, back then...
Man this is epic, I was never able to get very far in this game, due to being so young when it was released. I actually still own it... Haven't tried it again over 10 years, such a hard game.
Fact is this shit is gold and the new shit is gold in its self because on mentor it`s fucking retardedly hard and the cutscenes are so much more worth it when it can take up to 2 days to see a new one haha
Damn. all the Ninja Gaiden saga for the NES was pretty amazing, the game, the music, the drama hahaha everything in this games are good, Mr. @acidglow have you ever noticed that the song at 15:56 is one classic from Danielle Licari, an amazing singer with a powerful voice???, check the song called "Romeo et Juliette" and you will see what I mean. By the way, great vid, I really loved it
call it what you want but xbox NG games had no connection to the previous games story lines. NG1 on NES, his father dies but he's alive in the xbox games.. so either the xbox ones take place before the first NG game or they just made their own story with no connection to the past.. whatever..
Boy that sure was a classic. I remember my cousin showing me this game back in the 90's. It was Japanese so I couldn't understand the storyline back then, and I didn't even know the game's title. I had no idea this was to be the very beginning of the Ninja Gaiden legacy. After playing the Dead or Alive games and sampling the Ninja Gaiden XBox version and then learning about this I was like "THAT was Ryu Hayabusa? Wow!"
I remember when I first saw the temple @10:07, I thought it was the best graphics for the NES at that point. Its still awsome looking. If you notice at the upper right of it you can see the place where you fight Bloody Malth.
I was playing this game last night, got to level 6-2 and paused it for the night, got up to finish it and saw my nes had been turned off by my roommate...so fuck it I'm gonna just watch this and move onto ninja gaiden 2...
NG1 and 2 the story line makes them out to be Demons but in NG3.. the story went a different way to make them seem like Aliens with all this weaponry and technology..
This was epic storytelling back in the NES era. There was no game that could even compete.
Plus the game was extremely fun and challenging. Can you imagine how pissed off players nowadays would be if you made them start at the beginning of the world after losing to the final boss?
Hmm so sad that I was only 10 years old when NES is popular, and don't have chance to play NG1 & 2 :( I played NG3 smoothly and even left the game running without playing to enjoy its background music... :(
Fantastic stuff, I remember being 10 years old and blown away by the graphics and storytelling. It was like I was taking part in a movie, not just a video game.
Really paved the way for more story-intense games like the Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid series.
Yup, great cutscenes. I even put up the very rare TG16 and Master System cutscenes a long time ago. I'm tempted to do a custscene video of NG 2 on Xbox 360 since I have it.
i still have these games on the snes the trilogy, best music in a game lol, cant wait for sigma 2, part 2 on 360 was great so i'm sure the ps3 game will be better
Simple graphics like this make the story more interesting for some reason, and Jaquio is a wicked looking bastard. That son of a bitch gave me knightmares as a kid!
Wow! The first game with Cinema Display's Scenes... I remember when I play it on 1989...What a Sucess!!! Great history, Excellent Music and a staff of very difficult Bosses and Many hours for to learn how to defeat them. Thanks for post it!!
WOW -- I remember 4:08 now... I thought Ninja Gaiden was a sequel to Shinobi- the old Sega Game I used to play... am I right? ir no relation?>?? sorry I forgot the background story... besides what we seen here...
this game was by far the most ridiculously difficult get-hit-here-and-fall-to-your-death game ever. I remember playing this game for days in a row until I was finally able to defeat the Third-last boss... and then Jaquoi comes in and smokes my ass... and I had to restart the entire previous level! WTF!
story and music are awesome... esspecially for a NES game :O
It's kind of strange how Ryu has short hair in the Classic series and in the newer series and Dead or Alive he has long hair. And how they changed "Ken Hayabusa" to "Joe Hayabusa." God I loved this game. This was so ahead of it's time. Music was good (crazy touch having the theme to Love Story at the end), game play great, and cut scenes were dynamite to see with such a cool story. 5:27 music has been in my head since I was a kid, never forgot it. It was also hell to beat (fuggin' birds man!). lol. Anyways, thanks for posting this! Did you do NG 2 and 3? Never got to play three but beat NG2.
I was 14 when I first played this, and was too dumb to understand deep storylines like this. But when I look back, DAMN what excellent storytelling! And for a 20 year old game, that's saying alot. I agree with Gojiro7, that panoramic scene of Ryu watching the castle is breathtaking, as well as the multi-scrolling (!) scene of the plane dropping Ryu off. I never saw anything like that on the NES before.
Fucking Epic of a game. When I first saw the intro cinema, I was impressed, but I figured true to NES fashion, they make a fancy intro scene and that's it.
I beat level 1 and my jaw dropped. This game, is perfect.
10:08 is one of the most epic scenes in gaming history, just seeing Ryu standing on top of a mountian with his sword tucked behind him and his badanda blowing in the wind, you just don't see classic cool like that these days.
This game was intense... Gameplay and cut scenes... It still blows my mind. lol

That music wehre Ryu meets agent Foster is the bomb. Man, video games have come such a long way since I was kid, I'm so glad I never gave them up.

Great posting! I can't believe the cutscenes alone is almost 20 minutes. Excellent story line. Too bad I was never skilled enough to flip this game.

Yup! You said it.
Images like that are forever imprinted in my brain, this is definitely one of the all time greats.
