I think the point of that was to show how trying the whole situation is for the whole family, not just the sufferer. I think some ED sufferers fail to realize that they are not the only ones in pain. An ED affects everyone involved esp. the family. The family ALSO feel hopeless and powerless. I would know, I had an ED before and it was hard on everyone. It is not to say that what Ming did was the best thing to do but it depicts reality.
