Because when you are pushing you need to hold it for 10 seconds then relax and go again, helps the baby come out easier if you push long and hard instead of short pushes

I'm a Nurse(labor) and a mother. The reason we count is for the pushes of the baby and mother. After 10 we give the mom a break and start counting again

well actually this was her first,,, and she delivered in four hours and two hours later she was up and walking around. So I think she was pretty lucky.  and shes also in like a month already lost most of the weight... i think this is uncommon
