I wish that they would make DVDs of these shows. Us classic fanatics could use great stuff like this. Growing up in 1970s and 80s New Jersey I missed almost all of this magic. I only have a few eps.
In case anyone's wondering, this guy was hella smart. My dad used to be best friends with him before he passed. Mike Gillooly was his name, he was on MANY other game shows, that's how he raised enough money to purchase a Putt-Putt and run it for the rest of his life.
seems a bit suspicious. Streetlight...things that flash? not things that are red/green? and nylon slip, a vine....things that CLING?!! first guess? no way
@Gynecologist When you watch the show for 5 years, you get an idea as to what they have for subjects, and what you need to do to understand the subjects (get a picture). As for things that flash, back then unless you were in a major city (and even now to this day in smaller towns), stoplights would either be flashing red or flashing yellow, depending on if you had a stop sign. They only have so many tri-color out there these days because there's so much more traffic.
I think that's the fastest I've ever seen the Pyramid lights go on the daytime ABC version. I know the CBS 73 version had ridiculously fast lights after a win, and the 80s CBS/Syndicated versions had a constant speed. The ABC version had very slow lights, despite how high-spirited the wins were.
The stupid thing that got me with the daytime 70's version was that if you won at the $10,000 level, you were retired. You actually had to lose twice in the winner's circle to even try for $20,000. Now, does that make any sense? You were essentially punished for being good enough to win on the first try. That's just not fair at all. I don't know who's bright idea that was, but at least on Bill Cullen's nighttime version was like the 80's version. First trip to was worth $10K, the 2nd $25K.
Yeah it comes off as a bit much, but it's a good piece of advice. With two clues you have a better chance of connecting them to the answer rather than one.
Also I think that once you give an answer it tends to get stuck in your head. I've seen a lot of clips where contestants will give the same wrong answer several times.
I remember when Loretta Swit was on the $10k Pyramid on CBS and in the beginning, she was a little rough around the edges in terms of game play. But once she settled down, she was a Pyramid player par excellence
The contestant was Mike Gilooly, who also appeared on Scrabble, Wheel and probably another show I'm forgetting...I inquired as to whether or not he knew about the footage from his ep being used for that Comcast ad, and got a nice e-mail from him telling me how he not only was contacted about it, but also recieved a royalty for its use. On a sadder note, he actually died last year...RIP, Mike. :-(
What year was this?

Is this a new record win?

Not by a long shot. Still, I'm sure Mike didn't care... he won ten grand with the help of a gorgeous TV star! :)

@floridapanthersroar 26 seconds was a new record win from 1978. In case if you talk about going to the top in the fastest time.

That clue would have been buzzed. You can't be too descriptive in Winner's Circle play.

Loretta Swit may have played a Major on M*A*S*H, but if her skill at playing Pyramid could be an army rank, she would be a General.

Ah, the days where you could glomp one of TV's most lovely stars after becoming filthy rich...
You can't do that legally nowadays... :D

You win $10,000 in 45 seconds (or at least the equivalent of $10,000 nowadays)... would you CARE?!

Listen to Dick: "Give her a chance to to give two clues before you answer..." Why does that grate on me for some reason?
