  • hands down one of the biggest inspirational moments in sports history..

  • are you sure it wasn't all the free beer and hookers the Americans made available the night before?

  • ive been on the same ice as them i go to lake placid at least 1 time a year ive seen the hall of fame

  • @Corcvus crocuta

You're an idiot who needs to stop hating America because you don't live in it. Nobody cares if you know about the cold war. People come to watch this video to see the GREATEST SPORTS UPSET IN HISTORY. The fact that so many people agree on this and you're the only one to disagree means puts you in the minority

  • @BetterOffSingle

Back then pros weren't allowed in the Olympics so they had to pull juniors or college players. The Russians at the time didn't have a professional league but the men on their team were technically professionals. Hockey was all they did. The fact that a team of college players who have never talked to each other can beat a reigning championship team. So it is a miracle

  • goosebumps evrytime.

  • I am 45 years old.Didn't even watch hockey before these games. Now I am an avid Penguins fan. This game was that important. It brought the USA back together. This is the BIGGEST miracle is sports history,PERIOD!

  • @mcherpak1 Pittsburgh :D im a Steelers fan and penguins fan

  • What happened next?

Soviets were so angry they invaded Afghanistan!

  • This wasn't a true miracle. The US team had sixteen future NHL players on it, many of whom had remained amateurs so they could play on this team. The Russians were old and tired, plus the US had home ice.

  • @BettorOffSingle The Russian team was considered the best in the world at the time. The US team was made up of college players, many of whom didn't even know each other. They were the complete underdogs and that is what makes it a miracle.

  • @LaxD11 The Russians had the reputation, but they were old, like Ali in 1978 when he lost to Spinks. The US team had been playing together almost a year, and had sixteen future NHL players on there. Pavelich, Johnston, Ken Morrow, etc. Some of those guys had finished school as far back as 1977 and were amateurs in name only. Throw in home court and a late-round game and the result was not as shocking as it appears. \

  • My dad was there. he says it was the most amazing moment in sports he's ever seen. i've seen this video hundreds of times. and it still gives me goosebumps

  • FYI we don't give a shit if people think we're arrogant.....the world has never seen a nation so young triumph in so many areas in such a short period of time!

  • American college athletes beating the greatest hockey player sin the world.. this IS one of the greatest sports upsets of all-time and if you don't recognize that, it's your own ignorance towards either America or sports. I would also put the 1950 World Cup up there when the unknown Americans, who were not even an option to bet on, beat England 1-NIL in the opening round

  • OMG, this is why everybody hates Americans, so fucking annoying, I know more about the cold war and history than you so please, Shut the Fuck Up and stopping bitching I know what it meant to beat the soviets for you fucking Americans and that's great and all but for this to be called the greatest sporting moment in history is just ridiculous. Only Americans can give themselves such stupid titles and proclaim that whatever they do is more important than any other country's successes.

  • @CorcvusCrocuta . . . someone's a foreign pussy. Besides, this the greatest UPSET in all of SPORTS history. We just happend to win against a super power of the sport with a bunch of college kids (NOT BRAGGING). So fuck u and fuck soccer. Its 90 minutes of marathon runners jogging with a ball, 'OMG this is so intense its 0-0 after 60 minutes of people kicking a ball and tripping each other.' Grow some balls and play rugby at least. Prick.

  • @GuyNamedHonzik dude..I do play Rugby..The greatest upset in sports history is 1972 Olympics. U.S team which had NEVER been defeated. Lost. Lost with seconds to spare I know the game was controversial. probably should have gone the other way but it didn't, U.S team lost. <--- that sounds like a greater loss to me. You said the American were " A bunch of college kids"..So were the Soviets, what's your point. Idc about soccer I used it as an example. soccer is the most popular sport in the world..

  • @GuyNamedHonzik and soccer get's stories like this all the time all around the world but no one hears about them. Back to "Miracle of ice" Soviet team had been defeated several times already building up to this game. So I don't see why this on is more spectacular than the previous ones and dude, you sound like you need anger management, please...go to some lessons...

  • @CorcvusCrocuta what are you talking about? They had been destroying everyone in the Olympics until this game.. they were 5-0 and scored 51 goals compared to only 11 allowed! The Soviets never lost a game after this... and won silver.. obviously the USA took GOLD

  • @GuyNamedHonzik WELL SAID MAN! Rugby is awesome!

  • @GuyNamedHonzik this is where it gets awkward...I do play Rugby...and Ice hockey.. and Tennis.. fail. The Russian team were also amateurs don't forget and no matter how controversial it was the 1972 Olympic basketball game was the greatest upset in all sports history. The U.S Had never been defeated and then they lost in seconds But the soviet Ice hockey team had been defeated several times building up to this..so..Oh yeah by the way, you can't be foreign on the internet. You fail hard. Prick.

  • @CorcvusCrocuta ur such a fucking asshole who is ignorant because you are upset that you country is a piece of shit and that you just hate America for fun you stupid prick!

  • Without question, the biggest upset in hockey history. It was unbelievable! As a Canadian, I was cheering for our neighbours to the south. It was the US version of the Canada - Russia summit series of 1972. Paul Henderson scoring with 34 seconds left in game 8 Is still my biggest thrill, but this game is very high on my list.

  • I don't know why this is such a big deal, why it is the greatest moment in sports. It's not, it's just a win, if it was like 7-0 then yeah, sure but it wasn't it was just 4-3, GOD why do Americans big themselves up so much. Dude this type of stuff happens on a regular basis in Football. :/ seriously I thought the miracle on ice was something bigger and more dramatic.

  • @CorcvusCrocuta Because it wasn't about sport, it was an idealogical political win. I'm not a political freak, or a conspiracy theorist, I'm just a History teacher.

  • @CorcvusCrocuta Did you attend high school? Did you EVER hear about the Cold War?

  • @CorcvusCrocuta ACTUALLY, the Soviets were easily the best team in the world during these olympics. Also, as TheWarriorcookie said, this game was played during the Cold War. If you were intelligent, you would know this. I'm not going to explain what the war was, because you should know. So this game was about the Americans (the underdogs) beating the best team and their enemies. If you weren't so ignorant, you would know all of this already.

  • @CorcvusCrocuta The fucking Cold War dumbass. At the time Americans were losing all hope and their were hostages being held in afghanistan. This team of 20 year old college players brought together a country and at the time gave us hope. Do some research, the soviets were around 45-0 coming into these olympics and playing together for years. The Miracle on Ice

  • @CorcvusCrocuta you're just ignorant and stupid

  • I'm English and aware of the Cold War at that time. I mean no disrespect here, but would someone mind summarising the magnitude\importance of this game please? I just want to understand. Thanks.

  • @6anatolyy4 Sure! The Soviets were, by far, the dominate power in Ice Hockey at the time. Whats more they didn't have pro teams in Russia to take their top stars. The Americans were basically a 2nd rate hockey power and it's team was essentially all college players, with little experience playing as a team. Besides the political ramifications, it was the ultimate David versus Goliath story.

  • @ECWChris94 Thanks for that, Chris. I think I might delve a little deeper into that story for myself.

  • What I want to know is, why didnt the Russian coach pull his goalie?

  • It's too bad that America hates hockey and doesn't watch it. I bet 80% of America doesn't even know of this moment.

  • I remember watching this as a little boy. I have no idea what was going on but my dad and older brother were really excited. The TV was really loud and I could hear the people nextdoor yelling. I didn't know what the hell was going on but just the sense of everything got me going so I started yelling and cheering too.

  • Miracle on Ice: the song. by Matisyahu. Google it. Marry Christmas.

  • As ABC anchor said, this was like a Canadian college football team had defeated the latest Super Bowl champions.

  • What do you expect? The Soviet team had to walk and then swim to to the Games because their planes engine wouldn't start and all of their ships had leaks.

  • This Is America my friends.. this is it.. this is brotherhood.. this is how it is..

  • all of you who are bitching about anything are only doing a disservice to your argument and to hockey. this video is just as much (if not more so) about the underdog victory in the eyes of impossibility (let alone amongst the hostility that was the cold war) as it is about pure hockey. instead of whining like a bunch of rude assholes, regale each other with great hockey stories that you enjoy, or great games that you were personally present at. show some brotherly hockey love

  • the caption says it all, hands down greatest moment in sports history

  • 2:13 if u didnt get chills, there must be somehting wrong with you

  • Miracle of Istanbul was better

  • @ austin and your just a MORON that doesnt understand anything, hell the best of u ran down ur fathers leg....

  • Canada`s 7-3 humiliation of Russia at the 2010 Olympics tops this.

  • @iLuvBarRefaeli No it doesn't... the USSR had won the olympics from 1964-1980 and they were considered shoe-ins to win the 1980 olympics but this team that Herb Brooks put together was nothing more than some amateur collegiate level players (none of them were playing in the NHL and only a little more than half made it into the NHL) and to have that calibre of players defeat the undisputed best team in the world was a miracle.

In 2010 Russia had not previously won and team Canada was better.

  • @maplestoryroad Whatever douche didn`t ask for a speech, in terms of the storied CANADA-RUSSIA rivalry that game at the Oympics was a game for the ages, that will go down in the history books of the greatest hockey rivalry in the history of hockey. CAN VS RUS

  • @iLuvBarRefaeli No it won't. You know nothing about hockey.

  • @maplestoryroad lmao explain how a 7-3 thrashing of the highly anticipated game of the 2010 Olympic games featuring Ovechkin vs Crosby won`t go in the record books you dumb shit, got news for you every game between Canada and Russia is in the record books, and this one will be remembered as a humiliating defeat for Russia. You sir know nothing about hockey.

  • @iLuvBarRefaeli You're from Toronto and your opinion is invalid. Thank you.

  • @maplestoryroad ahh haters gonna hate, classic Canadians who hate Toronto are like Americans who hate New York, English people who hate London, French people who hate Paris, etc. They're provincial yobbos who fear and resent cosmopolitanism in any form. And on that note your from Vancouver home of the chokers lmao. sad you can`t answer my question of how it wont go in the record books, so you resort to childish hatred on the most important and powerful city in Canada - Toronto.

  • @iLuvBarRefaeli I hate the Canucks. Your opinion is still invalid. Thank you.

  • @iLuvBarRefaeli not even close.

  • @austinschingen Your an American who obviously doesn`t understand or respect the greatest rivalry in Hockey the world has ever seen Canada vs Russia. Don`t worry your a yank I would`t expect you to know what it means so i don`t blame you.

  • @iLuvBarRefaeli This game was more than just rivalry. It was during the cold war. Their was a tremendous amount of red tape just to allow this game to happen. The Soviet team was made up of professionals while we had a bunch of college kids playing together. Hands down greatest American sports moment ever. I know the Canada-Russia rivalry is huge but this game was amazing.

  • @iLuvBarRefaeli se jhgawlehgIWEGUHLWHDJHkswkfhwkehgfbbmv. Sorry your stupidity gave me a heart attack

  • GO CANADA GO!!

  • Best moment in any sport , bar none.USA RULES!

  • The picture is better than I thought

  • @fishnut89 God has nothing to do with the USA. But this was an awesome hockey game.

  • brilliant moment, stick your patriotism up your ass tho.

  • @KINGXxGRIMREAPER u mad bro?

  • Still brings happy tears to my eyes 30 years later. USA will always be the most prominent.

  • Dont worry about the posters that cant feel the glory of this. It is something that only us Americans are born with, that we love to take on the biggest bully even if we dont stand a chance. With this victory the glory of it will stand the test of time. Proud to be an American, forever. Thanks 1980 Hockey team for the inspiration. Hey ussr guy check out the kerri strug , dan jansen for some more USA good times moments. While we wait for your own country to have a david vs goliath victory.

  • I own a replica mask that Jim Craig wore, it is awesome! I actually use it to play.

  • Major props to Herb Brooks an american hero, innovator, awesome coach who had outside the box thinking it is pretty draining when you see young people give up so easy assuming that they have lost without even digging deep to find out how tough they really are.....well coach brooks was able to tap into those young americans and bring out their true heart and mental toughness RIP Herb you've done america very proud!!!

  • I can't even see who made the shot in the final seconds... but still, this is one mother f***ing glorious moment for the USA

  • What was this recorded with, an old 80's camera?

    Sorry, I had to. ._.

  • I'm from Russia and totally respect this. I cannot probably feel the same feeling, but I've read every comment in here and feel in my soul the underdog spirit of these boys. Applause! Would like to see more of this pure true energy in my people.

  • It's called the miracle on ice because the soviet Olympic team were professionals and had been playing together for years, the Americans were college kids and won!!

  • 64 soviets watched this clip

  • The russian should made a movie call "miracle on court", based on the true story about the 1972 olympic basketball final between usa and ussr .

  • @ussr2581990 except no one cares about that

  • @DirectorTurnerable Omg ! Just 1 win against the russian when the russian won over the americans over 50 TIMES ! US really good at bragging, the world really should watch how the russian beat the americans, not to mention even though they lost that, they go on and win the 1984 and 88' winter olympics ! So who won the most ?

  • @DirectorTurnerable THe russian really should counter this by making a movie about the 1972 olympic basketball final !

  • Comment removed

  • @ussr2581990 The Americans were robbed in that game. And you know it.

  • its called a miricle on ice becouse it will only happen once

    so stop beign so ignorent

  • Hey!

We have released the third teaser for the film. What do you think of the Toronto Maple Leafs' current ticket prices?

    Unbeleafablefilm

    ..

  • Epic Winning.

  • can someone tell me how 63 people dont like this video

  • Do you believe in miracles?

  • Too bad America nearly went into default and are screwed how long before your completely fucked u ignorant fat pricks

  • I was 11 years old, barely every seen hockey before and had no clue about the Cold War. But I knew something special was happening. And I knew what happened in 1980 wasn't supposed to happen. For some reason I was compelled to color an American flag after that amazing game (no....I didn't regularly color at age 11! But I apparently didn't care, either!). There it hung on my bulletin board until I moved out. Recalling it 31 years later is pretty fun.

  • i was a young teen growing up in a non hockey state of Texas. Not only was i not interested in the sport but i am hispanic growing up in a black neighborhood where none of us cared about HOCKEY! This changed us all. I can still remember us dancing in the streets and jumping for sheer joy. This is and will always be America's proudest sports moment!

  • the day that russia realized they lost the cold war

  • Take that you communist bastards USA USA USA USA USA

  • Look at this Minnesota talent winning a gold medal... Because we are the best at hockey...

  • @AGEOFTHOEMKE nope Michigan now....more than half the Vancouver games roster was from the state of Michigan

  • @dandandamattressman That's your opinion friend, but I deal in facts. Fact: over half the 1980 U.S. olympic hockey team roster was from Minnesota (11 out of 20 not including Herb Brooks). Fact: Minnesota produces more draft picks than any other state in the country. Minnesota has, is, and always will be the State Of Hockey, and that my friend is a fact.

  • @AGEOFTHOEMKE Don't forget how important Mark Johnson was to this team...

  • @uwlegionaire Look I look at what we've contributed to the sport no one else has contributed to the sport of hockey like Minnesota. Its culture here. I don't have a problem with any other state.

  • @AGEOFTHOEMKE but Wisconsin is better.

  • @AGEOFTHOEMKE 0 NHL Championships.

  • Wait Canada won? Well that sucks

  • 64 Russians on Youtube?

  • @SReis93 Not necessarily. There are many other idiots, including within, who hate our country.Anyway, good old times, when there was true pride on display.Red,white and blue forever.

  • @SReis93 66 Russians on YouTube.

  • I wonder if all those Russian hockey players are still in a Gulag somewhere.

  • so epic

  • @15lafan I've seen the movie but this movie isnt just for hockey players. It's made for but not just for

  • The Sports Illustrated cover was one of the best ever. Didn't need a caption. The photo said it all.

  • If you've seen this buy have yet to see the actual movie, I strooooooongly recomend seeing it. If you're as big as a hockey fan as I am, then you will be very happy to see USA take down the mighty communist assholes. USA!

  • yeah fuck yeah, who won the cold war!?

  • @EricaSteuwe Canada.

  • sometimes it suck to be 50, but I am happy to have seen this when it happened (or almost since ABC has been idiotic forever and it was tape delayed). And I was a big hockey fan back then, the Soviets had maybe the best goalie ever, and they had the best all around player in the world at the time. They were beating NHL teams easily. They crushed the US Olympic team in a warmup game.

One other thing that isn't often mentioned - the Soviet team took it like men. No whining or excuses.

  • hell yeah fuck the commies

  • One of the greatest sports moments in history ever.....

  • I'm a Brit. Love sports. Didn't know anything about this. Just watched a documentary over here on this and it mentioned how the Russian's had dominated for 20 years until this. After watching it, quite simply, I am sitting here smiling. What an amazing achievement.

  • Today is Jack O' Callahan's birthday!!!! (July 24) #17 on the team! LONG LIVE THE MIRACLE!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @JonO387'the bitch" hey man shut up

  • @JonO387'the bitch" hey man shut up

  • @JonO387'the bitch" hey many shut up

  • a bunch of college kids....bring tears to my eyes

  • great sport moment! beautiful movie too :D

  • what happened? i dont understand

  • @popboticbing Its the real life story of a bunch of young unknown college kids beating the world hockey power Soviet team.

  • this was the biggest thing for US sports hands down. Even if you dont like hockey its the attitude of America they could have easily been we got this far o well. But they fought like we should do as Americans brothers and sisters, family this was bigger than a hockey game it was a symbol of our great country

  • I cannot watch the movie (Miracle) or this video without tears pouring down my face and I am an IRANIAN! This is what we, as Americans, can do! :)

  • this just made me feel a lot better about losing to japan..

  • what if this game went to overtime......

  • everytime when he says that quote it gives me the chills!

  • @BlackHawksSuckDick i looked at you're comment, then you're name, and i felt the need to give you a thumbs up!

  • ★☆★☆ Don't Mess With The U.S. ★☆★☆

  • @superstrik9 you are totally not american because if you where you would have never posted that comment........... even if you are american you are truly not a real american just someone hiding here from real life

  • the best call in sports and the biggest moment in as sports and the world

  • @gemfan...right. This wasn't even the gold medal game. OT game winner by Crosby!!!

  • @MrRamsback28 yeah and it sucked as well was your team the underdogs and expected to lose no was it a miracle for you to beat the usa in the gold medal game no but it was a miracle for the usa to beat the number 1 the russians.

  • @MrRamsback28 you guys were the best team in the world this past olympics...it was an embarrassment that you lost to us in the early tournament. That being said, the USSR was almost an automatic to win the olympics. They were unbeatable and far better than the best PROFESSIONALS the NHL had to offer. And a bunch of college kids who never played together before beat them. Far better than you guys edging us out in OT...that was a good game...not a MIRACLE.

  • everytime he goes... do you believe in miracles? YESS!!!!!!!! goosebumps shootup my entire body. God bless the USA.

  • @newyoik2 Goosebumps? How about tears? Haha.

  • @newyoik2 Immediately after this historical moment, the best generation of American players had emerged-Modano,Leetch,Chelios,Tkatchuk,Amonte,Leclair,Hatcher,Hull,Roenick etc.Although not all HHOFamers, they all belong into USAHHOF.I thought that we would see another similar generation after a "Big deal success" in 1996 when the former group won World Cup,but that wishful thinking has never been fulfilled. The game needs as much exposure as possible.Put NHL back on ESPN would be a good start.

  • 2:10

  • @superstrik9, you're an idiot. That was one of the greatest if not the greatest moments in sports history. What you don't understand is the soviets BEAT the pros. They fucking dominated them. For years.. Then, a bunch of college kids, average age 21, beat them. The olympics meant a lot to those people. I'm pretty sure if you were on that team, you wouldn't have said that.

  • 63 of the dislikes are russians

  • still makes my spine tingle

  • This is the one moment in history I wish I could have witnessed. It tops everything including the moon landing.

  • 63 people are communist.

  • I dont care that Canada won the gold...that was their moment. But nothing comes close to the Americans beating the USSR. That was the greatest moment in sports history...It was an impossible game to win. I mean the soviets crushed the NHL all stars. And a bunch of college kids who had NEVER played with each other before beat them? Just think about it...it really was miraculous. And it represents what our great nation is all about.

  • @gmenfan48

Canada didn't win the gold. This happened in 1980. US won the gold.

  • @houlini I know...obviously you didnt read my comment. I said I dont care that Canada won the Gold in 2010 because the Miracle on ice was 100 times better and way more dramatic.

  • @gmenfan48 I'm English and\but it's great to hear your passion

  • @6anatolyy4 haha thanks...im not trying to take away other countries best moments in sport, but this was a huge moment for our country in general in the middle of the cold war with the Soviet Union and their communist regime. In a time of uncertainty, it let us know what America was all about.

  • Sorry to rain on your guys parade but every real hockey fan knows the Olympics didn't mean shit till the pros from the nhl were allowed to play. Its like the US in olympic basketball. Didn't mean shit till The Dream Team. When the best in the world can't play who cares? Nice moment and achievment, but best sports moment ever? LAUGHABLE!

  • @SuperStrik9 The Soviet players were the equivalent of "Pro" players at that time(As the communist system quantified all Soviet players as "Amatuers")........this wasnt US college players beating Soviet college players. Know your facts before you comment.

  • @SuperStrik9 but you dont seem to understand the historical side of this victory. not just was the soviet union the best hockey team in the world at the time but the soviet union and the united states were at risk for a nuclear war and the nations hated eachother and this was just one way the soviets could kick the americans ass without blowing everything up. also the soviets destroyed the US in a match just before the olympics.

  • @SuperStrik9 so yes... based on the historical implications of this game it could easily be seen as the greatest moment in sports history

  • @SuperStrik9 Every real sports fan can appreciate what this game meant to these kids and to everyone in America. The NHL All Stars played this team a year before these olympics and they lost 6-0. A dream team lost to the soviets, but this group of kids triumphed and beat them against all odds. That's why this is the greatest moment in sports history.

  • @SuperStrik9 You probably weren't alive when it happened. The Cold War, the recession, and the Iran hostage situation all contributed to this bleak time in American history. The unlikely victory was a huge boost to this nation when it needed one badly.

  • @SuperStrik9 youve gotten alot of replies because of your bold statement. So i think a few of us are wondering: what tops this game as the greatest sport moment? What else did an entire nation rally around for years to come? What else incorporated the american spirit in such a way that this team did? What else saw such a miraculous outcome that every expert predicted would not happen?

What else changed not only one country, but two?

Jesse ownes? Muhammed Ali? All contenders...

  • i remember as a kid i didnt think this was important but now that i am older i now know that this IS and will be the greatest sports moment ever.

  • This moment in history shows what the true America is all about. By no means are we perfect. But we look at the people who live here and the wonderful things that they do. America is truly a great country and no matter how dark things can get for us, there will always be someone to stand up and bring us our of our darkest hour.

  • What a beautiful day that was

  • I grew up in Winthrop ma, I Remember the feel of what was going on but what was going duing the game no!!!!

  • 62 people are still part of the KGB

  • I think this is the pinnacle sports moment in the world! You have to remember, Russia had just mad mince meat of the NHL All-Star team (it wasn't close), and they were beat by college kids....REMARKABLE! I was at a high school basketball game, and they announced the score after 2 periods....the Gym went crazy and many left to go watch the Olympics on TV. I myself left and when the final score was announced (the game was not shown live), I couldn't believe it. It was the best moment in sports

  • goosebumps.

  • that goalie was frikin something

  • what a horrible coach for the usa team

  • heard bin laden died. immediately went to this video to remind me of how much America rules.

  • @mkant66 This really is a day to celebrate US, being American has not felt this good for decades..until the past couple of years, and especially since last night! And, you're right, what better way to honor the day, than to go back to this day, that we, as Americans, had the greatest, and much needed, shock of our lives--it was almost too good to believe..it was euphoric! I stilllll puddle-up watching it~

  • 61 people are disappointed that the Soviet Union collapsed.

  • I have seen it over 30 times and I still get chills every time I see it or hear it! Best moment in sport history!

  • 61 people have absolutely no soul.

  • @jbond5150 ..Must be Russians. Still aching souls. ;)

  • Regardless of what country you're from, or defending for whatever stupid reason, god fucking damn it I love hockey.

  • from russia and am hockey player myself, and have nothing but respect for american team..great moment in sports

  • @klef731 Thank you, sir, and may I say in response, how exciting it was when Russian athletes joined American hockey teams. Such great talent!
