This guy must be feeling sorry now. When apple was busy slapping lame iOS on a tablet, Microsoft was working on Win 8 for ARM. iPad might be on the top right now, but the real long time champion is going to be MS.
I love how he says apps are the future and that everyone will be using them over the web/search. Yea that's great how the hell would you find THEM !
Have you tried Android/windows/Apple app store to find smth. Unless you know the name it's almost impossible to find the app you are looking for and that's with half a million app. What happens when every website decides to create an app how would you find these "Quality apps" in the sea of Billions of apps
@cynicalnihilist hell yeah... he states that the public has chosen apple? thats crap... the public has been lead as sheep to apple. i am sure that if all these people knew the core issues things would be a lot different.
I really don't have anything positive to say about this video because fuck if everything he did and said didn't irritate me. Putting aside all the goofy shit he said, the way he said it and his CONSTANTLY irritating body language just irritated the shit out of me.
If we have a quick look at netmarketshare and realtimestats I don't know how the hell this guy came up with all those fake figures. I bet this guy 3 years ago he would say myspace in 5 years will rule the social network industry. Just so you know, if you tweet this you might win an app free.
ever noticed that google didn't really need to do advertisements? Google is successful for being outstandingly good at what they do.Okay they did ads for Chrome and even for the searchengine but Apple just keeps pushing their products down your throat everywhere they can. Watch TV? Apple everywhere. Magazines? Apple everywhere. They pay a lot for that. They pay for making you think you're special, when you just swim with the flow against freedom
I've studied videogames for 30 years and I agree with most of his views, but I've been playing games continuously with little break (as much as I can help) over the years and I believe that game apps have a great future. I believe that multiplayer ad-hoc networks will be the pinnacle of "interactive" games, where kids can play tag from their celphones using the camera on the phone. 3D technology and resolution have been perfected for the human eye to see with the retina technology. Mix the 2
What a bunch of wingers you are! Android rules this, apple sucks that. You missed the point because you're so caught up in trying to be right that your android device is better then an Apple device. Notice how not many apple fans are commenting... Why? Because they don't care. It's a sad, sad debate that should have ended long ago. Who gives a toss what you have? We surely don't.
@antwakefield I totally agree with you. This video's not about some stupid holy war between smartphone companies, that's just not TED-worthy. What we see here is a seasoned internet entrepreneur giving his take on what he thinks will be the next big way of providing content and MAKING MONEY on the internet. Whether he turns out to be right or not is another matter, but it's worth listening to nonetheless.
He completely didn't take into account Steve Jobs possibly passing a few months later. This may very well have changed the fate of Apple. The man was Apple. This guy is partially nuts. I bet 3 years ago he would have said Myspace was gonna take over the world.
He is just an Apple fan. Also he seems to be a very bad investor he has his money in all these "sideshows"... I think he does not realize that most people are not so into themselves as to need to buy an ipad. Great talker, but he seems to hot airish and too transparent. Also he seems not to know what a strategy is, something Steve knew very well. So my question is does anyone else at apple know what a strategy is? If they don't I give them 5 years before they go bust
Apple is DOOMED, without Jobs to find them the "next great thing", they will get passed by Android on the phone platform, and later by Android on the "book" platform. This is the same thing as happened with the Mac and the Wintel box.
Apple does not understand that its "locked-in", "fascist" model is not long-term viable under any circumstances.
Need to reiterate what others have said, Windows hasn't been displaced as a method connected to the web, it's just that there are so many more devices capable of internet connectivity. Something similar could be said about cameras.
I own an IPad and an ASUS transformer and and ASUS laptop, and an Android mobile phone. I gave IPad to my kid after playing with it. I play with Transformer but can't get it to really work with MS Office, etc., which where most of my work is. I am longing to have a tablet that can work with MS Office well. For now, I may settle for a new super-light and cheap Win 7 mini-laptop. I am wedded to gmail and other google products because of the integration and the ease of moving across them. Amen.
I agree that the % of connected Windows on the net isn't as great as before and are getting smaller and smaller. But it isn't because people stop using windows. It's because that where a family before had a computer to connetc online they now have a computer AND a phone each. Guess what. Adding something else lowers the % windows without removing anything. Doh!
html5 is a programming language? don't think so champ... if you add javascript in the mix you have a half braked solution... but yeah you obviously have no idea what your talking about.. and "no more flash box", flash is far superior than html5 right now...
Somehow I doubt Apple will be that successful. I don't see how they can possibly overprice their products by so much and still be able to make better products than their competitors.
It would be interesting to hear him speak after seeing today's dominance of Android in mobile arena and the eminent release of Windows 8. Also how Google has changed the way search results are now with G+. Not to mention more predictions of Android Tablets to rule by 2013 if not sooner. Things are changing, he's right. Though much of his theories can be debunked today.
HTML5.... well even el Goog been switching for years now. Nothing new.
@sonyerectson Android tablets are not going to do shit. Look what happened when the ipod contender stepped up to the plate (zune). Right, they were all just discontinued.
Forget about his comments re: Apple. Listen deeper. What he's talking about is coming from someone who has a deep pulse on the situation. Listen to him past your own bias and conclusions of what he's talking about. Whether he's right or wrong doesn't matter. Focus on the hypotheses presented. if you can debunk them, then study the facts, the real facts before attempting to debunk. Then come up with your own hypothesis. There's more - always more to be created. :-)
@rigpa44 most rational point on here- I cant understand how easily people become completely entrenched with furthering an everlasting and banal war of words around Apple/Google. It's all about listening deeper as you said to understand the next wave he is talking about which 86 people will clearly not be part of (except inevitably as a consumer when it has taken place)
I got to point 4, then I stopped. This is evangelism, not rational analysis. It has the same fractioned feel of a conspiracy theorist's reasoning where the bits and parts *sound* right, but once you start digging it's just a fancy front with holes and no coherency behind.
For instance point 1: the number of devices isn't constant. There aren't *less* Windows devices out there. There are just more devices.
And HTML 5? It's just fancier HTML. You still have to know how to make software.
HTML5 is a programming language? I had to stop watching at that point. I can get that level of ignorance plus a lot of hand waving from people who think themselves tremendously shrewd at my local business networking group.
I am sorry but I will have to disagree with him. He got off in the wrong foot when it comes to his prediction. Some of the Apple fanboys will realize that Android is a wonderful plat form and stop paying high premiums for Apple products. Windows is not going to die anytime soon and I am sure that they dont many internet enabled devices going for them but what they do have is a lasting reputation and a wonderful platform which has a proven record to be intuitive and user friendly.
this guy has no idea, Apple arn't gona do well, all they tend to be doing, is selling devices that give u limited options, and lock you out of over 50% of the devices potential. if they wona make it big, they need to allow for customisation, and make things open source, people are looking for personal, and Apple just isnt supplying it.
I'm sorry to say, but, I picture apple falling within the next few years, want to know why? You have cell phone manufactures like Droid, and Wp7, that are pumping out new features, new designs, and major increases on their phone's. As it stand's HTC, the leading manufacture for Wp7 and Droid phones pumps out a new phone every year, which has, if not surpasses the Apple iPhone specifications. All Apple has really done with the iOS5 is rip features from Droid. They are no longer original, at
@kite781 a time, Apple, did infact, have originality, hey, they were the only successful touch screen phone for the longest time. They also, standardized mobile media., but even corporate giants are going to fall, not only that, you have to look at it this way, their visionary, Steve Job's passed away recently, Apple got its originality from Jobs. To sum this up, Apple isn't original anymore, that is said with Mac, and iOS, you have Droid launching a new OS, as well as Win8(Which I love).
Agreed with everything except for the notion that Google is on its way out.... Chrome > every browser, and is leading in HTML5 (Safari is a joke). We are in a situation right now where people are only buying Apple products because as a general consensus it is all they know exists. As the technology evolves people are going to start realizing that there are other, better options out there.
@BiccBoy Chrome is a virus. It "updates" itself (make changes to your computer) without user approval and there is no option to turn off this "feature." I'll stick with open source Mozilla and it's awesome plug-ins.
google is not a search company. Google is a data mining and advertising company. They're doing a wonderful job of looking forward into new horizons and finding ways to leverage their core competencies advertising and data mining. yes moving forward it will all be about the platform. he gave all kinds of information about the direction but he didn't speak of how to leverage it. the biggest thing the speaker seem to get was the fact that he needed to build a platform...
If you think this talk was about cat-fights between companies, you haven't listened to him really. He pointed out very important facts about the future and none of them was about Apple or Google.
This is a failure. Google has Android, Youtube, Google Chrome, Chrome OS, not just Google Search... He implies Apple makes everything better for people. Perhaps for the 'regular person', but for the better-than-average technology user, google lives for us. Android is easily unlockable, modifiable, over-clockable, etc. Apple has restricted so much! I wonder how much this bastard has been paid to speak this load of shit, because Google will rule the world.
Pretty poor TEDTalk, IMHO. Google is far from dead, and a decline in index searches doesn't spell its impending doom. Google is far, far more than just a search engine.
The speaker talks , and the audience are expected to accept whatever's be spoken as genius lectures. I don't deny some of the talks are inspiring, but definitely not all. And i always keep in mind that TED talks is just a single perspective event.
the Microsoft dying graph seems pretty distorting, it probably has more to do with the fact that the total amount of connected devices has grown, not that MS is necessarily being replaced. I admit that it is a bit true since the OSX market share is growing, but this shift doesn't translate to the graph is shown. and for the record, I'm a linux guy, I'd love to see M$ die, but, that simply isn't happening to the degree suggested.
@johnguns7 if HTML5 is going to be so great I don't understand having 'apps.' Instead of making an app that can only run on the platforms it was designed for, just make a good html5 website that will (should) run in all browsers.
@combatLaCarie Apple takes in more than HALF of all profits in the cell phone industry.
Its not about just pumping out shitty devices to call it marketshare. Its about creating a great product, continuity between engineering, software, manufacturing, and marketing.
Also Apple DOMINATES supply chain. With such a small share of market space, Apple is the 2nd most profitable company on the planet.
So remembers, its not about quantity, its about quality.
so biased over apple, and let me tell you a truth about HTML5, it isn't a solution, its just a joke right now that apple invented that will get over flash, because flash can deliver all the functionalities of their apps and break the apple store, thats just that, thats the real story behind the scene.
this is completly biased over light, casual users of apple and mobile devices for not important things about the web.
It's great to see the result when someone who's passionate about a field has the time and resources to postulate, explore and conclude about future possibilities. Rogers's talk is a great example of clear reasoning, synthesizing multiple sources, and drawing a straight line through a bunch of jagged zigs.
Interesting that Apple shares just passed $500 PER SHARE OMG
