You're right, but both ways have advantages and disadvantages. I think if you have more than 3 people, then it's just so much easier to hit the table rather the cup bottom. However if you have 3 or less, it's proper to hit the cup bottom. Like I said, either way works.
There are many ways but this one is the best.

I always played it hitting the top of the cup also... but it might be easier this way, you don't have to rely on a bad pass

Awesome, I used to play this at camp. I like the acoustic effect of putting these particular cups on that particular table.
