The population of Nanking in the beginning of 1937 was close to 1 million. Those are civilians. But as you know, at the time that the Japanese began their bloodbath, the city housed 90,000 disarmed soldiers trying to surrender. These were all murdered very quickly. Also, as the bloody murder machine of the IJM rolled west from Shanghai, every city between Shanghai and Nanking was hit. All of these refugees fled westward and ended up in Nanking.
