Even from the begining in the Manga, he's portrayed as an older guy she's pseudo-dating. I didn't read far enough into it to get to the part where Takumi and Mogi started dating, but It was very apparent from the first 2 volumes that she and that rich guy were dating or something.

It was such a situation that if she wanted something, he would buy it for her (hence her surprise in ep 1 of stage 1 at how little someone could earn in a month: she'd never had to work for money for what she wanted).
