This isn't a single payer proposal, this is a "Public Option" Basically it's just another insurance company that is subsidized by tax payer funds. The insurance companies operate on less than a 3% profit margin, so even if they gave all of their profit back to customers, that would only lower costs by 3%. But the truth is that it's the Hospitals and the Pharmaceutical companies that are screwing us. The details are important and the news media is trying to scapegoat the insurance companies here when even if they gave ALL of their profits back to their customers, that would reduce health care costs by less than 3%. Facts are stubborn things and they DO matter MUCH more than ideology.

I lived in Vancouver, Canada from 1995-2004 and i miss their health care system. I could tell the difference between our two nations. Canadians are preventative and better educated about health. i watched congress build the bills on c-span. they talked to experts in the field and voted on everything that went in and stayed out. all the videos are available to watch at the cspan website. go have a look if you get a chance. it's going to be good reform. the congressional budget office has already graded the bill and found it deficit reducing. this will bring healthcare to millions of people and lower costs for the rest of the country.

I stopped watching c-span when I realized that it was pretty much all a show and the real decisions and planning were made behind closed doors. I'd rather read the bills because they are what actually goes into law, but with the thousands of pages that this bill is, I might not be able to. the constitution sets the rules and we vote on changing it, so government is always under the restriction of the people. our 3 branches are suppose to work for us, not the corporations. when we vote for an administration change, we vote on the issues that the majority agrees with.

for example, i still can't get through the first few goals of the Repub charter because of their stand on abortion rights. i just can't back away from that issue so i vote accordingly.

I think the main point he made is correct. To my understanding the current mess is created by the tax code and a multitude of state and federal regulations that distort the free market. More regulations and more bureaucracy will drive the cost up more. Trying to impose price controls will cause shortages.

The biggest problem doesn't lie with the insurance companies. Yes they are messed up but they operate with only a 2.5% profit margin. What other industry does that? Our problems lie with the cost of healthcare which directly effects the cost of insurance. The democrats are not addressing this main issue. With the public option and the "competition" saving money the most they can do is 2.5% before going completely in the red. Our government needs to work on lowering costs not spending more!!!
