To all you bunny huggers out there. Hunters have preserved and bred more animals than all of you put together. In Africa there is a shortage of habitat so animals have to pay their way. The odd old male is hunted (for large sums of money) and the proceeds used to pay for the protection of many other animals. They are dying to save the rest. There is no welfare in Africa so people have to get value from animals or they will eat them all.

The CAMPFIRE program provides it while substantially reducing poaching. You have ranchers in SA and the more modern farm areas. Hunting raises $ for protection of the animals. Those game reserves rival many banks n terms of security. They have armed game officers patrolling for poachers all over the place. Those of you unaware of game conservation in Africa should learn that the only countries that have functional species preservation programs are countries where a value is placed on game animals. Kenya banned hunting in 1977 and their herds have been slaughtered by poachers and pastoralists. Hunting preserves game species because the tribes and governments receive concession and trophy fees which pay for conservation efforts. Hunting works.

The preserves get over crowded with lions. If there are too many lions in a certain area it effects the diversity of all the animals. That's why they allow hunts.

@Kakorat009 Lions are more under threat due to TB than they are of being killed by humans. See if the hunter didn't want to hunt the animal then landowners would change their land from natural vegetation into farmland. Landowners are money orientated so if they get more money from hunting they will have game farms rather than fields of cash crops. Also you have to bear in mind that the lions also have to be in game farms with prey and so other animals benefit because of the death of one lion.

Normally, if you approach in an open area with scattered bush cover like this, the lion will retreat giving the hunter a broad side shot. It is very rare that a lion charges no matter what you do, they will generally retreat, this one did not!

I am a hunter. I would never shoot a lion or an elephant or leopard... I just love those critters and couldn't stand to kill them. Hunting lions is not detrimental to the population as long as the lions being harvested aren't currently a pride male. Older males or young males who don't already have a pride are fair game. If you shoot a pride male, the successor comes in and kills all the small and nursing lions. So if you kill a pride male.. you are killing 5 or more lions with one shot.

In the first place, quotas are set way over the numbers that are practical for survival of some of these species because they don't even know how many animals there are and secondly it's all about getting as much money as they can until trophy hunting is unviable. All hunting was banned in Botswana and Kenya because all hunting was having a detrimental affect on the wildlife and that includes trophy hunting.

Preserving lions by the fees generated from hunting them may be a bit of an oxymoron but it's increasingly becoming the only way the resources are generated to protect the animals and their habitat. It's often the hunters that show the most practical support for the animals they hunt. Most of the people who make hateful comments about these hunts don't realize that their own approach: doing nothing and "leaving the animals alone" is the biggest reason why so many species are going extinct.

@neoperseus lions in general in africa are classed as vunerable according to wildlife associations but in parts of africa, mainly central and east africa are classed locally as endangered. for the long term survival of lions a pride has to be in the region of 200 strong but nowhere in africa is there a pride over 50 strong, hence many animal welfare groups are pushing for lions to be classed as endangered in africa.

Legal hunting produces fees that lease habitat and provide wages for game wardens to police any illegal poaching and poisoning of the Lions. @gourdguru If you do a little research, you will find that one of the main reasons you still have wild lions today is because of legal hunting and the fees generated. These fees pay the salary of the very people protecting the Lions, lease land for lion habitat & compensate farmers for lost livestock so they do not kill them needlessness. Most knowledgeable conservationist understand that legal hunting is required to keep beast populations in National Parks and such healthy.

However, I feel that implementation of harsh penalties for destroying a lion without a permit would fulfill the same task. As for the hunting fees providing habitat, the same could be done with hunting fees collected from impala/ wildebeast hunts. Trophy hunters have not overstepped their quotas. The legal hunting of lions was suspended for a year twice in Botswana. 2002 and 2007. The suspension came because farmers had killed an alarming number of lions. There is no chance of a legal hunter with a tag entering an area and killing lions. The hunter needs both an import and export license for the lion. Hunters want lions to exist forever. Poachers and farmers not so much.

Kenya banned hunting in 1977 and their herds have been slaughtered by poachers and pastoralists. See if the hunter didn't want to hunt the animal then landowners would change their land from natural vegetation into farmland. Landowners are money orientated so if they get more money from hunting they will have game farms rather than fields of cash crops. Also you have to bear in mind that the lions also have to be in game farms with prey and so other animals benefit because of the death of one lion.

Normally, if you approach in an open area with scattered bush cover like this, the lion will retreat giving the hunter a broad side shot. It is very rare that a lion charges no matter what you do, they will generally retreat, this one did not!

I am a hunter. I would never shoot a lion or an elephant or leopard... I just love those critters and couldn't stand to kill them. Hunting lions is not detrimental to the population as long as the lions being harvested aren't currently a pride male. Older males or young males who don't already have a pride are fair game. If you shoot a pride male, the successor comes in and kills all the small and nursing lions. So if you kill a pride male.. you are killing 5 or more lions with one shot.

In the first place, quotas are set way over the numbers that are practical for survival of some of these species because they don't even know how many animals there are and secondly it's all about getting as much money as they can until trophy hunting is unviable. All hunting was banned in Botswana and Kenya because all hunting was having a detrimental affect on the wildlife and that includes trophy hunting.

Preserving lions by the fees generated from hunting them may be a bit of an oxymoron but it's increasingly becoming the only way the resources are generated to protect the animals and their habitat. It's often the hunters that show the most practical support for the animals they hunt. Most of the people who make hateful comments about these hunts don't realize that their own approach: doing nothing and "leaving the animals alone" is the biggest reason why so many species are going extinct.

@neoperseus lions in general in africa are classed as vunerable according to wildlife associations but in parts of africa, mainly central and east africa are classed locally as endangered. for the long term survival of lions a pride has to be in the region of 200 strong but nowhere in africa is there a pride over 50 strong, hence many animal welfare groups are pushing for lions to be classed as endangered in africa.

@neoperseus the solution is for more land for the lions and other threatened species and to make sure theres no encroachment. the huge fees paid for killing a lion is having no effect apart from building schools and roads but they need to buy land and protect it. warning after warning has been given and all these animal populations are still declining whether they pay $600,000 or $1 million to kill a lion. it'll stop when theres no lions left in africa.

In the absence of that, and in the presence of constantly diminishing habitat and the threat of poachers, the best practical solution is legal and controlled hunting as long as the lion population is maintained. Legal hunting produces fees that lease habitat and provide wages for game wardens to police any illegal poaching and poisoning of the Lions. Poisoning by farmers and poaching are big threats, but the biggest threat is loss of habitat.

@gourdguru If you do a little research, you will find that one of the main reasons you still have wild lions today is because of legal hunting and the fees generated. These fees pay the salary of the very people protecting the Lions, lease land for lion habitat & compensate farmers for lost livestock so they do not kill them needlessness. Most knowledgeable conservationist understand that legal hunting is required to keep beast populations in National Parks and such healthy.

I realize that it works perfectly well in practice, but I'm sure there are plenty of other ways to fund the parks in a less principly absurd manner. I too am a hunter, I mean no disrespect. I just think that there is not much reason to slay a lion, unless of course it is to protect livestock and human life, or even perhaps for food.. but I doubt many hunters eat that kill.

However, I feel that implementation of harsh penalties for destroying a lion without a permit would fulfill the same task. As for the hunting fees providing habitat, the same could be done with hunting fees collected from impala/ wildebeast hunts. My problem is with the hunter, killing something to satisfy his ego, while extracting some benefit that could be come upon in another way

Tanzania has the greatest number of lion populations in Africa but where trophy hunters have overstepped their quotas the populations are declining at an alarming rate. Trophy hunters have turned their attention to leopards in Tanzania because of the lack of lions and now leopards are declining at an alarming rate. Banning trophy hunting of lions and leopards will be the only solution eventually as in Botswana and Kenya.

Trophy hunters have not overstepped their quotas. The legal hunting of lions was suspended for a year twice in Botswana. 2002 and 2007. The suspension came because farmers had killed an alarming number of lions. There is no chance of a legal hunter with a tag entering an area and killing lions. The hunter needs both an import and export license for the lion. Hunters want lions to exist forever. Poachers and farmers not so much.
