They have TONS of flaws in their writing which they try to mask with stale technicality among other things. DT has some incredible works but for every amazing measure of music you have to deal with 99 measures of FILLER. and I can't blame them because they've been writing for decades. should have taken a break like portnoy said. They're just getting destroyed by young new prog bands.

For example, the album Colors by Between the Buried and Me is at this time far more influential in the prog metal community than anything DT has done in over a decade. After the smoke clears from this album people are gonna realize its exactly like Black Clouds....sub-par! DT has great musicianship but the way they use it is starting to bore even some loyal fans.

The band is clearly using what made them famous to keep the fans supporting while still trying to grab some new ones. Some may say that's being a "sellout", but I disagree. DT is doing what they love, as you can easily see by their live performances. Whether their recent albums are innovative, genious or none, I dont believe it matters to them. They just do what they love.

For me DT is really way past their prime years of 91-94 when when Myung was headbanging, portnoy was shirtless, labrie was belting every note in every song and pointless guitar solos were a rarity. What made them famous were Images and Words, Awake and Metropolis YET they've been milking not the writing techniques from these great albums but rather Systematic Chaos, Octavarium and Six Degrees. They have changed a lot so its easy for some to say that they've sold out.

As a result of Dream Theater's Progressive Nation Tours, we now have bands like Scale the Summit and Between the Buried and Me. Dt really put BTBAM on the map right after their album "colors" which is very much the modern Images and Words that younger prog fans have been waiting a long time for.

So far, they are doing a great job at it (as you said) but unlike you, I still enjoy greatly their recent work. ADToE is clearly a rewriting of Images, which shows they're still aware of their strenghts.

IMO, Dream Theater should have asked Blake Richardson and Terry Bozzio to audition. I'm saying this with all due respect but I don't think Mangini will be a good addition to DT.(I'm not saying he's a good drummer). I say he should work with DT for 4 years, then after that he could vacate DT. Then Blake Richardson could be DT's new drummer.

different feel from mangini. song arrangement seems to lack flow that Portnoy brings.Also think that Portnoy had developed an incredible sound in recordings similar to Peart that is very unique. Chemistry and drumming. Zep with Bonham. Who with Moon or Van Halen with his bro. Rush with Neil or Stones with Charlie. Drumming is more than just drums or technique.

Mangini brings a new wave to DT:s music. Drums arent anymore RLBBRLBBRLBBRLRLBB. Now its actually more technique. And now drums dont make fills after each comp:P Portnoy made fills as long as 8 clicks ^^ More musical drummer and music getting more progressive old school sounding DT.

I still miss MP. But WE can't control what happened. I think MM will fill MP's shoes. For me it's always been about the band...........not just the drummer. DT still rocks!
One thing I am going to miss about Mike Portnoy being in the band is his new kit for every tour. Who knows what it would look like if he were on this album.
I give props to Labrie. So many people bash his vocals nowdays, but there's probably only a handful of singers in the world that could endure that much strain for so many years of constant touring and still even manage to have a voice. Especially with the type of music they play. Not to mention he's the only guy in the band with any stage presence. lol

@funkster007 Haha yeah, and LaBrie doesn't even have much stage presence really. He's not a bad singer at all, but he's not a virtuoso type like the other guys, and people come to expect that. He's a good singer, probably better than average, but he's not as amazing as the others guys are at their instruments. But totally dude, most people's voices would be shot after all that strain.
@Cysgodllyn Maybe not at the same level as the rest, but I wouldn't be so quick to say that 20 years ago. To be honest, before James hurt his vocal cords, he matched every member in skill level. And on that note, I'd like to say that James isn't too far off from his old self sometimes. He has healed up very nicely despite the constant touring. I am pleased with him :)
@Xallia621 You have a very good point, and his voice is really quite amazing on the albums before that happened. But I just meant compared to Myles Kennedy or someone like him. He's got the high's, but not the low's as much.
This album is absolutely incredible......... It leaked yesterday, (dont freak out, I'm going to buy the album when it comes out) but you will not be disappointed. Incredible songs, very progressive, Dream theater is back...... Petrucci stepped it up a notch..... This totally makes up for the last 2...
wow... mangini live is so much better then mike live...there both great drummers, but mangini has more visual flair with ambidextrous patterns and symmetrical kit...(also his round kit takes less room up then the two kit combined)

Mangini brings a new wave to DT:s music. Drums arent anymore RLBBRLBBRLBBRLRLBB. Now its actually more technique. And now drums dont make fills after each comp:P Portnoy made fills as long as 8 clicks ^^ More musical drummer and music getting more progressive old school sounding DT.

I give props to Labrie. So many people bash his vocals nowdays, but there's probably only a handful of singers in the world that could endure that much strain for so many years of constant touring and still even manage to have a voice. Especially with the type of music they play. Not to mention he's the only guy in the band with any stage presence. lol

@funkster007 Haha yeah, and LaBrie doesn't even have much stage presence really. He's not a bad singer at all, but he's not a virtuoso type like the other guys, and people come to expect that. He's a good singer, probably better than average, but he's not as amazing as the others guys are at their instruments. But totally dude, most people's voices would be shot after all that strain.

@Cysgodllyn Maybe not at the same level as the rest, but I wouldn't be so quick to say that 20 years ago. To be honest, before James hurt his vocal cords, he matched every member in skill level. And on that note, I'd like to say that James isn't too far off from his old self sometimes. He has healed up very nicely despite the constant touring. I am pleased with him :)

This album is absolutely incredible......... It leaked yesterday, (dont freak out, I'm going to buy the album when it comes out) but you will not be disappointed. Incredible songs, very progressive, Dream theater is back...... Petrucci stepped it up a notch..... This totally makes up for the last 2...

wow... mangini live is so much better then mike live...there both great drummers, but mangini has more visual flair with ambidextrous patterns and symmetrical kit...(also his round kit takes less room up then the two kit combined)

Labrie is not the bands frontman, and you're expecting him to be, when in all honesty, imho, he's meant to be part of the background.
The band doesnt Have a frontman, and even if it did, it would entirely be John Petrucci, their guitarist.
You're looking at DT as if it were a mainstream band, meant for the pop audiences. It's not.
DT is a band that requires a fine tuned ear.
Pay attention to the notes he's singing, not the lyrics he's speaking.

I am not looking on DT like mainstream (i don't listen to mainstream). I don't give a crap about their lyrics...all i am listening to is a performance. In this case the worst part of DT. Maybe colour of his voice is a personal taste, but never liked him...listening Liquid Tension instead...
