Glad to hear that Dave is doing ok. I think my cat has asthma too as she coughs like that a lot and has been doing so for years, but our vet isn't really convinced.
As for *her* name being Dave, a work colleague has a female cat named Kevin. She gets a lot of people respond "don't you mean *he*?" when she refers to Kevin as a she.
My cat has asthma too. He has it badly though. Episodes of deep breathing from his tummy and with his mouth open, also wheezing. For those of you who don't think cats can get it, I have had 4 different vet opinions and they all said he had it. One weekend it cost me almost $400 to save his life at an emergency clinic. He does well now with liquid albuterol and liquid prednisolone compounded to taste like fish. Sometimes he gets benadryl as well. Asthma does exist in cats (and dogs too).
Thanks for posting this, most videos of cats with asthma are usually more serious or not as sublte (open mouth breathing, violent head shaking) Things my kitty doesnt do, he simply jsut gets down low and wheezes sometimes similar to this- kinda just happened out of the blue, never had any other attacks , he started having fits (we thought they were hair balls) he hacked something up, but continues to have the fits without producing another hair ball.
My 3 yo girl has kitty asthma. We take her for acupuncture, she has an inhaler, we have holistic and prescription medicine for a humidifier, and still my little girl can't seem to get it under control. We thought it was hairballs for a few months, but realized there was never a hairball. Not one. She ended up in the ER on Christmas eve, and got numerous steroid shots, etc. We almost lost her. People need to care about their pets and be more aware. How is your kitty now, anyway?
is he ok now he looks like my uncles cat shed, but he had a wife who was vishis and mean and kept him in a shed and never let him in. but when he duvorced her he took the cat with him, but in cuort the mean wife aunt sindey took him back! she wuz soo mean.
My cat had the same symptoms posted in your video. Believe me, I never knew this could happend until my cat woke me up at 4:30 AM with the worse breathing problem. He was recently diagnosed with Asthma.
I work for a pet insurance company and Im such a huge animal lover I know that sometimes when a pet is suffering from an ongoing illness or injury you cant do anything about it and that medication is the only way, this owner is trying to help other pet owners identify the symptoms of this illness so that they can get it checked out for their own pet...well I hope they are anyway.
read the comment. The video is taken AFTER the medicine was administered. The video is helpfull to cat owners (like me) who until now did not know what asthma in felines looks like.
This is amazing. When I was a little girl, I had a cat, Charlie, who would have spells like this. I didn't know it was feline asthma. I am sure the doctors back in the early 1970s didn't have the medicines we have for our pets today. Charlie eventually died from it at the age of 13, but lived a full and happy life. I hope your cat can do the same. Big Hugs!
Hi davemc1958 -- talk to your vet. Mine recommended Flovent, and inhaled medication, to be used in combination with the aerokat pet inhaler; google 'aerokat' and you will get lots of information about it. If your vet has never heard of Flowvent and aerokat, get a new vet!
You could try Flovent. It works the same a steroids, but doesn't have the same systemic effect on the cat's body. The shots are the worst for the body.
anddawede -- We have a AeroKat inhaler for emergencies. Luckily we have only had to use it twice. When Dave had her first big attack the Vet put her in an o2 chamber, too.
My cat has asthma as well. She's pretty under control now but has to take Flovent inhaler and theophyline. I also have prednisilone and albutoral enhaler for emergencies. I let it go for years thinking it was a hairball until one bad night she almost sufficated and I took her to the emergency vet.
At the emergency vet, they put her in an oxygen chamber and kept for a couple of days. It also helps to get an allergen air filter (I have an ionic one) and change to a litter without a lot of dust.
Dude it's a hairball, I have 4 cats, and yes, one of them hasn't figued out to cough up the hairball yet. Not only that, but I've had cats for the past 18 years. Your problem is that you made a mistake and can't admite when you're wrong... ;-)
Jesus, yet another self proclaimed vet. That is asthma. I have asthma myself, along with the rest of my family. I really fear for your pets if you are willing disregard a veterinarian's diagnosis. Kudos for bunktrudy for being more polite than he should here. Perhaps you should follow these steps:
1) Use a dictionary, or just learn how to spell "admit ". It will do miles for your credibility.
2) Ask someone who has bad asthma to look at this video and see what they think. All this video reminds me of is the countless nights I have woken up hacking though a soda straw trachea.
Oh...my siamese cat sometimes (rarely) coughs like that and i thought it was only some food in her throat. I am going to take her to the vet to check her out. I didnt know cats can have asthma. Thanks and i hope Dave gets better.
OMG I'm so sorry to hear about your cat, I hope she's better now! My friends cat had Diabetes so I know cats can get diseases just like us humans, forget about these people's comments above, they've prolly never owned a cat in their lives.. Your cat is lucky to have you!!!!
Hi doubters -- Dave has asthma, I kid you not. It's a medical condition, diagnosed by a veterinarian. When you compare x-rays taken of Dave's lungs when she's having an attack vs. when she is not, you can clearly see the inflamed areas of the lungs during an attack -- little loop-like areas called "doughnuts". My vet put her on Prednisone, an asthma medication also taken by humans, and she went from having 1 minor attack per month to 1 every 6 months, often longer.
LOL... So "You are the only one"?! This is no hairball nor asthma attack, but a WORM attack, when the worms "jump" from a cat's lugns to it's nasal cavities by making the cat cough! :o) From there the worms crawl down to the alimentary tract and grow up. This is their normal life cycle, so you should help Your cat just to get rid of the worms!
Nope. It's not a hairball. The posture, with the stiff neck and chin low to the ground, and the fact that nothing comes up and the wheezing lasts for a long time and wears the cat out, are important differences between a Hairball Cough and an asthma attack.
Glad to hear that Dave is doing ok. I think my cat has asthma too as she coughs like that a lot and has been doing so for years, but our vet isn't really convinced.

if he is having an asthma attack why are you video taping it instead of helping it and getting it to a vet or giving it a puffer !!!

My 14-year old cat has asthma, which for a while we tried steroid shots. Then she became diabetic, probably from the steriods. What can you do?

so they can show the vet and others - very helpful!

What is the point? It's called "education". You might want try some of that, sometime.
