How can you tell the difference between Cantonese and Chinese? They sound the same to me.

chinese is a family of languages, mandarin is the one i am learning and cantonese is the one my neighbor used to speak in hongkong.

Mandarin is a form of chinese that is more socially favored and also

mandarin is equal to four or five tones (I say five or four because there is a fifth neutral tone at the end if you wish to put an emphises on any word...)

and

cantonese= six to nine tones and I only counted nine so I heard a difference...
