i know this guy and met him. Hits everything pure. what else is there to golf? golf isn't aerobics and it doesn't matter how you look when you hit that damn ball unless you hit it pure.
Yep, an ugly swing, far less orthodox than my own....I play off 14, Craig Parry makes a very good living playing golf..........its down to hand-eye co-ordination and natural ability, so thumbs up to Craig Parry eh!
I think the major difference between Parry and a lot of regular OTT golfers is how he flattens the shaft out SO much with ulnar deviation (uncocking the left wrist) while normal golfers continue to 'roundhouse' it to contact the ball. He made it work, as did Craig Stadler to a lesser degree.
@TheNYgolfer Of course you can. Ever watch Mark McCumber?!
Miller's only saying it's bad from a pure textbook 'Ben Hogan' standpoint, he's not criticising Parry's ability or effectiveness. Listen properly before you engage your keypad! ;)
@MrAJR76 "over the top" is shoulder spin out resulting in the typical amateur clubhead throwaway syndrome and ACROSS the line (out to in swing path). NO professional golfer would ever win on tour with a TRUE "over the top" swing. McCumber does not swing "over the top". Cswing his swing. He may be slightly above his setup clubshaft plane at impact but his clubhead still approaches the ball from inside with NO clubhead throwaway. Physics knows no other way :)
Miller IS critical of Parry`s swing to the extreme -- right up to when the ball lands !! Then he runs with his tail between his legs and has the second insult to suggest Ben Hogan would say similar. He is wrong, I remember Ben Hogan saying that he respected all golfers, but I think if there was an exception it may be Miller, if you have read about Hogan`s life you would agree that Miller is just the sort of person Hogan would NOT have time for.
Technically very sound. Parry (note spelling) has about 25 victories worlwide. Oh, and if you want to compare with 'ugly', maybe check out Perry(Kenny)!!
it's Parry not Perry, it's like calling Jack Nichols right? Parry bread and butter was his short game one of the best in his day, twice as good as Miller's ever was. Craig was in contention in a few majors a bit unlucky not to bag one. At 5'6 he is a small guy and does what he does to get the ball around.
@db30039 Yet he somehow managed to win the U.S Open and British Open. If he couldn't put worth shit he must have been one hell of a shot maker to win those tournaments, which only gives more credence to his analysis on this particular swing analysis.
John Miller is obviously arrogant, and arrogance of course is a demonstration of ones inadequacies. Why would you be so dumb as to insult a whole nation of golfers who have great respect for Craig Parry.
Ian Poulter turned pro off 3. Nick O'Hern turned pro off 4. Good pros were'nt always the best amateurs.. And majority of gun amateurs dissapear.
As for Johnny Miller.. If he didn't have such an ego he might've won alot more tournaments. Who cares about Parry's swing.. 80% of golf is played from within 100yards. Miller of all people should know that, dirty yipper.
@nickoman5 Ian Poulter turned pro off a 4 handicap. His actual playing ability was around +3. This is because he practiced every day for a short time without entering any competitions, so his handicap remained at 4 until he turned pro.
He might be harsh sometimes, but he's usually spot on with his analysis and knowledge. I respect him more because he's honest, but he's not just another "dickhead" commentator who knows nothing. People need to remember his success in golf in order to realize he's got wisdom. When he says something very direct, sometimes controversial to people, he sticks by it and has the experience to back it up. Keep hating if you want, but I bet none of you assclowns, and some pros, know as much as he does.
Looking at it, Craigs swing is far from modern but look at the guys build, short stocky and solid. This, i believe exlains for it's compact action. Although you can't deny one thing, he's straight and very consistant with a deadly short game. Johnny Miller needs use some manners every now and then.
@MrAzzatron You're right because sometimes Miller can be very frank, but how many times has he been completely wrong? Mind you that commentators can be wrong a lot, but I mean being wrong in a way that he looks stupid. He does have golf success and knows a lot from that experience, so I really like his announcing because he knows his stuff, unlike some ignorant commentators out there who are just real fools.
I don't like Johnny Miller really, but he's right. Don't everybody hate on him for his commentary on this swing. Remember, he DOES say "he hits it unbelievably good" in there. He's not discounting Craig's golfing ability, he's just saying that's one ugly-ass swing. And it is.
@Goynes42 He might be harsh sometimes, but like you said he's usually spot on with his analysis and knowledge. I respect him more because he's honest, but he's not just another dickhead commentator who knows nothing. People need to remember
@Goynes42 Right on meester. Miller was absolutely correct. Parry is massively over the top (and across the line at the top). Look how far left his divot goes.
