Mostly due to reproduction. 2 folks have 4 kids. Those 4 kids have 3 kids each. The original parents doubled themselves and their children had 1 1/2 times themselves. That is 1=3 1/2. Instead, if the 2 parents had 2 kids and those 2 kids had 2 kids. Therefore 2=2.

Our population reaching A BILLION is inevitable even if immigration is halted. At our current rates of reproduction this will happen within the next 150 years, only one generation more than if immigrants had been here.

@kennysymonds Your knowledge of US demography is as poor as your ability to do simple math. If 2 have 4 who have 3 each, then the population has grown from 2 to 12, or 6 times, not 3 1/2 times. The fact is that immigration is the primary driver of our population growth. Reducing it to traditional levels of 300K/year, we can easily achieve a stable population size well below 1 billion.
