I play mine with a pick and with the neck plate around my belt buckle level, I drape my forearm over the bass. Totally comfortable and natural which holds the neck up acceptably. This is a good example of the basic sounds the bass gives and though it's not an obvious choice for slap it can do it quite well. It's a great bass and I look the bollocks onstage with it.
I've always had problems with balance with any thunderbird bass. With that problem along with very little/no space to give room for popping although I have seen people popping just fine, for others the P finger always gets in the way of the pickup and that can hurt sometimes.
@escapethisfate15 i just got one and i really like it. all you have to do is remove the strap button from the upper body and move it to the plate where the neck bolts to the body, and it will balance quite nicely
I have a Thunderbird, and the neckdive doesn't bother me, just use your hands and lift it, it's not that hard (I didn't do anything special to the strap peg)
My first thunderbird was alpine white in its first run. It was a flunk with the hardware and easily got cracks out of nowhere. then i used my friends custom shop sparkly blue thunderbird for a few shows, and it was a sick bass. they just seem to have a problem with the strap buttons.
ya i own a epiphone gothic thunderbird, and its extremly top heavy, i love it though i got used to the neck dive, being the only bass i do now or have ever owned when i first started playing assumed all bass's did that haha
is it good for flexible playing. i mean if you have a wide taste and want to play different style but most metal influenced. would it be a good choice inn that case?
its good but alittle uncomfortable when you play, its heavy and has a long head stock, im selling might after having it for a year cause i nvr play it, im really more of a fender person. i think its alittle too "pretty" for me. its something like the fray and gay bands from today would listen to, im into 90s and 80s rock although krist noveselic uses them alot and nirvana is my favorite band lol
@boratslaya Krist also used Stingrays, Gibson Rippers, Gibson Artists and Thunderbirds more than he played Jaguars. However he is playing a jaguar in the smells like teen spirit video, so that's why people closely associate not only Krist, but many grunge musicians with that shape of guitar/bass. Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, and Kurt Cobain also used Jaguars.
I own this bass limited edition custom shop In Alpine White with Black Nylon coated strings its pretty badass! id love a tbird pro tho or a real gibby
i have one in the sunburst finish it is a very good bass just a little off balanced if get one get new strings stock are okay but i got ernie ball ones and i like those
Ill be getting one soon. Apparently Nikki Sixx (Motley Crue) and Shavo (System of a Down) plated these. The pickups are ideal for slapping and plucking. Id highly reccomend one. (Ive played em, but dont own em)
@IntellectualAmy yeah i agree they do tend to slide i only got mine yesterday and it has a very obvious neck dive. but apart from that i luv it its a great bass good sound!!!
@Fredrockroll It is, terrible neckdive and heavy. Due to that it's very different to play than a more regular shaped (stratocaster shape) bass. It has an awesome sound and I love it soundwise, but I can't reach my full potential on it, due to the heaviness and neckdive. I am more agile on a bass with a slimmer neck and one that's lighter etc etc. I will be getting a 5-6 string, probably Ibanez. Awesome bass, awesome sound, but don't buy it as a beginner bass. Get your basics and techniques down.
Please Answer these questions for me, someone who is about to buy this bass:
How is the solo'ing on the high end? Can you hit 19 on the g easy? Does it give you a groove kind of feel? And if you were on stage, and a pretty big head banger, would you think this bass will work for Metallica type of thrash? A big meaty tone if possible?
I play the epiphone goth thunderbird in a hard rock band/metal band and it sound amazing. In fact it kicks out so much low end even with the tone knob on 10 that I have to lower my volume when I use someone elses amp. It just has this natural volume boost to it. That said I have owned 2 epiphone basses and had neck issues, but they can be adjusted.
they work for alot of styles, but yes they work for thrash. If you have heard of Annihilator (if not look them up) they use these live and in the studio.
my friend has one but he sold it. I played it a couple times. I found with the right distortion it can sound great. I'm gonna get this when I have enough money :) good luck bassing

I own a below squire p-bass and will probly get this next. Unfortunately it only comes with black hardware. Im trying to go with the entwistle look and want chrome. Anyone know where i can find one? Awesome bass though
Y'know, I love the sound of Epiphone tunderbirds, but it really sucks when someone says a "proper gibson" thunderbird. Honestly, they're two different basses. And you can say what you want, but paying for a gibson is just paying for a name. Epiphone all the way. (squire's the execption to the brand-name rule. they just plain suck except for the chosen few like their fretless jazz.)
there the same bass really the normal one looks better (my opinion) , the nikki sixx one is awesome if you like the goth look and theres a new thunderbird pro that should be checked out, all epiphones
Has anyone recorded with this bass? Just wondering how it sounds, any help would be appreciated.
