I think Phelps could have won this. Look how far behind he was off the dive and still touched first at 50m, only to go back to second after the underwater part. If Phelps could once again have the best underwater dolphin kick in the world like he had in Beijing he can probably win this race.

@1224erday because the lack of oxygen is your biggest enemy during the last 50m at 200 IM. Lack of oxygen = more lactic acid in your muscles = harder to keep your technique at max speed = loss of speed.

Also, their freestyle technique allows them to breath like that without really losing any speed, their freestyle is built up around how they breath and their dolphin kick.

Wow, this was so close. Lochte really deserves this win. After many years of frustration with finishing second to Phelps, he was able to beat him. He used Phelps weapon to beat him i.e., serious determination, heavy workouts and underwater dolphin kick. He is the best swimmer now, congratulations to Ryan!

@V3GAdigi1 That's not true. It was Phelps who held 200 IM (long course) records from 2003 until end of 2008 Beijing Olympic. It was after 09 that Ryan took over from Phelps NOT always. You're right, I forgot about last year events. I think both swimmers are phenomenal and deserve credit for what they have been able to accomplish.
