I do that already, I watch japanese adult videos, Jaoanese erogame's, a DS game called Love Plus, I watch Downtown Gaki No Tsukai (super funny japanese show) but learning the basic sounds is important, just try to imitate the locals.
Sam do you have any tips or books or sites for learning the particles and memorizing them and also how to use them in sentences. Hope that made sense.
I started this method back 2 years ago and i'm pretty much heading towards fluency by the end of next year(reading, listening and speaking-wise). Writing will take time but I'm giving myself 4 years for complete fluency. This method does work but it's about the long-term effects not short-term effects. Put in the time and you will come out a success(common sense). It should be fun and not seem like your doing work people. Keep at it and you will be fluent in japanese!
Umm i think i could not heard and read all 24/7 because i think that it will effect my English and Spanish...when i learn Japanese i wont remember how to write or read in English and Spanish..well i think because when i was learning Spanish i did forget some English... but idk if it will be the same with Japanese

I agree, Immersion is the best way! I've been doin the same thing . I listen to Japanese music (literally) all the time. And I LOVE watching Naruto in Japanese and I take notes off it. Now there are things that I can't teach myself so I've been using Pimsleur, which uses the "Immersion" method! It's has been really helpful. This method works, I can honestly say this 100% now. 1.3 years of learning japanese through this method/using the srs. @Timeyful Dir En Grey is pretty good. go with anime songs and then branch out. IF anything start out with a Japanese band on Pandora and then branch out there. Find music in japanese you like and you'll be set.

I switched my Pandora station to Japanese music *exclusively* then I started watching Japanese dramas, youtube videos, and anime *exclusively*. However- I still have the subtitles on and I'm just specifically listening and trying to figure out how the translation came about. Now I'm in Japan and trying to get out and listen to real people speaking around me and trying to get things done like buying yen from the bank and getting a cell phone service ^_^
tkyosam, you're absolutely right with this method. I learned to speak, read, listen, and type (not write by hand yet though) fluent chinese in 3 years time without ever leaving china.. i used the internet mostly for this and even got myself a chinese fiancée.
@TkyoSam actually, xXx, someone who is not japanese who learned the language can teach you japanese better than a native speaker. he may not speak japanese as well as a native speaker, but he went through all the learning processes necessary to gain a level of fluency in the language... most japanese did this when they were babies.... they can't remember the learning processes, not even professional teachers can....

@XxXa123456789zXxX learning a language as an adult, is different to learning as a child. a japanese person would not know how to learn it as a 2nd language as an adult.

Good stuff; thanks for the video. It's kind of heartbreaking though having wasted so many years and dollars on classes when it's fairly obvious after practicing this method that it's clearly the best way to do things.
@TkyoSam lol um dude i have been wacthing japanese anime and music and all that all the time ( not trying to learn japanese) lol but i dont no japanese. :( i mean i i can learn the words but still dont no the meaning.
@TkyoSam well, i'd say it depends, i watched chinese shows with english subs, now if u just watch without using ur brain it is useless... but if u watch and try to pick up which english word belongs to which chinese word, you can actually pick up some vocabulary (of course some basic vocabulary already learned would be helpful) but the trick is to not watch EVERYTHING with subs.. go with half in the beginning, and after u get really good, start to watch things subbed in japanese instead
This method is how we learned our native language. It can be applied to any language, japanese as well. And it works, really well if you just give it a try. So far i've been doing this for a year and my results have been impressive.
i really wanna learn japanese my parents want me to learn spanish coz im half spanish from my mum but im just not interested in that i wanna set myself a challenge so i would be like maybe 1 of the only girls at school who can speak japanese i'll visit that website thanks and i know watching anime is good im watching 2 animes at the minute so u r rite there
ok i got the rosetta stone and its awesome!! now like you said, you have to surround yourself by the language too. so i have some music and some japanese tv shows. is it best to have english subtitles, or is it better to not have any. i noticed with the subtitles that its kind of distracting and i dont really listen to the language. what do u think?
how long do you think it will take to speak it fluently? 3-4 years? im not as interested in writing it, i mainly just want to speak it and understand it.
@TkyoSam ya im gonna tackle speaking and understanding first. then ill go for the writing and reading. is that a good way or should i learn it all at the same time?
but..if we just listen and read japanese we'd know how to say the words but we would not know wat the words mean...if u could send me a messege explaining how u learnd wat the words mean
English is my 3rd language and how i learned is was by listening to it 24/7. In my childhood i used to watch Cartoon Network like 23/7 and we all know that they have the same episodes, so i was looking at what the chareceters were doing and started understanding. Speaking came by itself and my grammar improved when i played English games and had chats with english speaking friends+ obviously school helped.
oh also, learning kanji when used in words is a hell of a lot more effective than just learning single kanji as some words have kanji that have not a damn thing related to the meaning of the word (弁当 anyone?) XD
hey, im going to be moving to japan in january and i'm trying to learn enough japanese to not be retarded when i go, so i was wondering if this approach really will work ( listening and watching 24/7 )
I am right now at 800 kanji. And I am kind of frustrated that I should still wait until I reach 2055 so that I could start grammar and vocabulary that I end up stopping for few days everytime. So my question is, do you think that I would be fine if I started working on SRS sentences now (paralelly to my kanji studying of course) ?
@thelastalchemist Dude, read his site again man. YES! KANJI first, then SENTENCES! Kanji is everything bro. Without it you are retarded. It makes everything so much easier, plus kanji is cool man. Imagine the brownie points you get for knowing kanji^^
I'd say that you're in a position where you know most of the everyday kanji so you can work on sentences, but if you come up on a kanji you don't know, just look it up and add it to a word list or something. If you end up reaching 2055 kanji with very little sentence knowledge, that'll be a miraculous failure and I'd have to rofl in pity. とにかく、漢字と共に文法を勉強すれば使えるようになってきて日本語が段々楽な方になってくると確信している。
That's actually a really smart thing to do. I listen, read, and watch Japanese shows and manga all time (Well SOME of the words are in Japanese, I'm not good at translating YET) but I never thought about how I learn Japanese from those songs, books, shows movies etc.
Gotta say that in these 8.8 months(yes I have included decimals). My improvement has been vast. This seriously does work, it's effective as f..... lol. Anyhow keep going and you'll be at your goal in no time.
don't know why you think something you bought in america is a piece of shit. having lived in japan, i felt most of their products were inferior most of the time. japan isn't future land, it's far less advanced than america. if you want to see an advanced country, go to korea.
Hey there. I've been listening to japanese music 24/7 for like, 7-8 years. I never really found myself learning anything new aside from pronunciation...I don't really know what this has to do with my question, sorry.
I am going to Japan this June as an exchange student for 2 weeks. My question is: Do you think I could learn a decent amount of japanese before that time using this method? At least to communicate the basics.
@PhantomWolfCourier You are expecting a miracle to happen. You CAN'T learn a language in just 2 weeks. I've been using this method for 5-7 months. I know I've learn Japanese from this because I checked videos I couldn't understand back than and noticed I've picked up a lot of stuff.
@fdsdaafdsf No, I'm not trying to learn the whole language in 2 weeks. I know that this is something that's gonna take quite a while. I was just curious as to if I would at least retain enough to communicate basic needs while i'm over there. Like when I'm hungry or tired or sick. Or when I need to shower. the very very basic stuff.
yeah ive been watching subbed anime for many years and dont understand japanese. but since i watched your video and interview i decided to try watching anime at night with my eyes closed and listening to what there saying and i can almost follow whats going on. i would guess i am picking up like %20 of what there saying. thats really good progress if you ask me. i am gonna keep at it untill japanese is permantely scared in my brain.thanks for sharing the immersion idea.
Hey Sam, where do you get english shows/movies in japanese? I love seinfeld and the simpsons but for some reason I can't seem to find them online to buy. Where did you get them?
@joeschmo88 Here's an easier/cheaper way: most movies (blu ray & DVD) have the option to change the spoken audio to a different language. Alot of video games do, too.
@Muso992 I was definitely going in that direction but I've noticed that most of the movies that I would have fun watching aren't available with Japanese audio. French and Spanish seem to rule American DVDs.
I watch anime and read manga all the time. It actually really really helps. When you watch Japanese animation with American subtitles it actually makes it really easy because you learn as you go.
I first got the "Pimsler" CD's which basicly teach you set phrases so that you can get around hotels and resturants... I bought a book/dictionary/cd but that sucked. Then I got conversational JP for idiots... I lost intrest. Then the Rosetta stone program which is pretty good. But I guess Ive been emersing myself for a long time watching anime for years in japanse and that has really made a huge difference. And my waitress and the sushi place I goto helps alot to...Good stuff man!!
I think you're probably the first j-vlogger I've met that has a method I could probably use! I've always been an audio learner, and everyone keeps telling me 'try this book or that dictionary.' Pimsleur's audio files have worked best for me, but they're so formal and stilted, I feel like I'm not speaking REAL Japanese, like the difference between Mexican and Spanish.
nice vid man ive been using khatz's method for two months and seen great improvements that could not have been accomplished in my japanese school class where are only source of listening is our gaijin teacher! Keep up with the good vids.
This is some epic 13th warrior shit.....just its japanese not old norse XD

You should really work on your accent, you pronounce the tones in American English.
Learning how to pronounce the hiragana should be the first thing.

There are different ways to learn japanese.
There's not a best method, every way to learn it is good, all depends by your mind and your type of mind and way that is better FOR YOU to memorize.
Everyone have different way to learn...
Mark can memorize better reading a book, George listening a conversation, Julius by a school...
So there's not a "real way" to learn it... everyone must follow the best way, having regards of theyr capacities and mind-form.
Forgive my english, i'm italian.

@TkyoSam lol um dude i have been wacthing japanese anime and music and all that all the time ( not trying to learn japanese) lol but i dont no japanese. :( i mean i i can learn the words but still dont no the meaning.
animeirules4ever 1 year ago

Is there a book that teaches kanji the way you learned it? I'd like to be able to read at least 2000 Kanji, and 3000 eventually...

ok i got the rosetta stone and its awesome!! now like you said, you have to surround yourself by the language too. so i have some music and some japanese tv shows. is it best to have english subtitles, or is it better to not have any. i noticed with the subtitles that its kind of distracting and i dont really listen to the language. what do u think?

English is my 3rd language and how i learned is was by listening to it 24/7. In my childhood i used to watch Cartoon Network like 23/7 and we all know that they have the same episodes, so i was looking at what the chareceters were doing and started understanding. Speaking came by itself and my grammar improved when i played English games and had chats with english speaking friends+ obviously school helped.
omgidkwhoiam 1 year ago
oh also, learning kanji when used in words is a hell of a lot more effective than just learning single kanji as some words have kanji that have not a damn thing related to the meaning of the word (弁当 anyone?) XD

One question:
I am right now at 800 kanji. And I am kind of frustrated that I should still wait until I reach 2055 so that I could start grammar and vocabulary that I end up stopping for few days everytime. So my question is, do you think that I would be fine if I started working on SRS sentences now (paralelly to my kanji studying of course) ?
thelastalchemist 1 year ago
@thelastalchemist Dude, read his site again man. YES! KANJI first, then SENTENCES! Kanji is everything bro. Without it you are retarded. It makes everything so much easier, plus kanji is cool man. Imagine the brownie points you get for knowing kanji^^
TkyoSam 1 year ago
@TkyoSam
とにかく、漢字と共に文法を勉強すれば使えるようになってきて日本語が段々楽な方になってくると確信している。

don't know why you think something you bought in america is a piece of shit. having lived in japan, i felt most of their products were inferior most of the time. japan isn't future land, it's far less advanced than america. if you want to see an advanced country, go to korea.
theoccultsound 1 year ago
PhantomWolfCourier 1 year ago
@PhantomWolfCourier You are expecting a miracle to happen. You CAN'T learn a language in just 2 weeks. I've been using this method for 5-7 months. I know I've learn Japanese from this because I checked videos I couldn't understand back than and noticed I've picked up a lot of stuff.
fdsdaafdsf 1 year ago

Where did you get them?
joeschmo88 1 year ago
@joeschmo88 Amazon Japan dude! And NicoNicodouga!
TkyoSam 1 year ago
@joeschmo88 Here's an easier/cheaper way: most movies (blu ray & DVD) have the option to change the spoken audio to a different language. Alot of video games do, too.
Muso992 1 year ago
@Muso992 I was definitely going in that direction but I've noticed that most of the movies that I would have fun watching aren't available with Japanese audio. French and Spanish seem to rule American DVDs.

I watch anime and read manga all the time. It actually really really helps. When you watch Japanese animation with American subtitles it actually makes it really easy because you learn as you go.
dreamcatcher2690 1 year ago

Thanks, Sam!

nope, like here
I learned:
1st-Hiragana and Katakana
2nd-Kanji
So if there were words I didn't understand I just scanned over it and put a sticker on it to come back to it latter on.
